1. Both characters appear to be up to something that’s unknown to the audience.
The mise-en-scene makes it clear that both characters are working on something,
possibly a job, so they perhaps belong to the working class.
From the left hand picture, from the props around the character, it gives off the
impression of something to do with photography, which compares to the photo on the
right as the audience has no idea what they may be writing about.
However, the camera work is clever in the way the audience cannot see the faces of
either characters, meaning it isn’t certain which social groups that characters fall into.
As these two characters are in the opening scene, you automatically assume they will
have one of the main roles in the film as the enigma leads the audience to want to know
what is going to happen.
From the photos, it is clear that one character is female and the other male.
This is unusual in this type genre of film as you don’t usually get female characters playing
the leading roles.
The ages of the characters is left unknown.
2. The similarities between these two characters is that they may have one of the leading
roles in the film, which is unusual for a thriller as it is usually the men who have the main
parts.
They are both around the similar age group- early 20s. The costume of both characters is
simple and casual. This doesn’t usually fit in with the thriller genre as the characters are
usually wearing dark, black clothes, making themselves look more mysterious and to
create suspense.
The location of both photos is very different. The location on the left is enclosed and
somehow doesn’t link to the thriller genre in the sense that you wouldn’t expect anything
“thrilling to happen”. This contrasts to the picture on the right as it fits the thriller location
stereotype more. It’s in the open, outside so the audience waits for something more
unexpected to happen.
