The camera captures a mid-shot of a male and female character in a library setting. While the female holds a knife, their body language and gaze into each other's eyes suggests they are deeply in love rather than threatening each other with violence. Bright background lighting highlights the romantic tension as they appear to be having a comedic romantic moment. Analysis of this single still image helps identify the genre as a romantic comedy rather than the horror initially suggested by the knife prop.
1. Camera – The camera angle is a mid-shot.
It is a mid-shot because we can
see the upper half of both the male
and female characters. The camera
also offers connotations to whether
or not the female character is going
to stab him or whether she is going
to cut up whatever is on the plate
he is carrying. We also know that it
is a mid-shot by us seeing a little bit
of the background and it this case it
looks like a library.
Setting – The setting appears to be of a library inside
someone’s house. The setting indicates that our
potential first thoughts of a horror film are incorrect, and
that actually the film is a rom-com. The setting tells us
this by the fact in which the books are all neat and
organised, this could suggest the connotations that the
characters both share an interest in books/reading, from
this interpretation we can also interpret that the
characters are intelligent and see reading as a pleasure.
The characters fit the typical
stereotype of a typical rom-com
as you can see from the
way in which they are
looking at each other that
they are deeply in love with
one another. We know this
from the characters
postures and the way in
which the gun is positioned.
By the woman holding the
knife quite care free, it
suggests that she isn’t
interested about cutting the
food anymore and suggests
that she wants to get to
know the man better.
Lighting – By the
background lighting being
very bright, it contrasts well
with the characters black
clothing. The bright
background lighting also
shows the females angelic
face and although her hair is
covering her eyes, we are
pretty sure that she is
looking at the man in the
scene. The bright lighting
therefore making our overall
connotations much stronger
as we can see a love/hate
relationship going on.
How does looking at a still-image
help our analysis? – This still image
helps our analysis a lot as our
immediate genre connotations are
incorrect as we think that it’s going
to be a horror as she is holding a
knife.
Genre – From looking at this still-image we can tell that
the genre of the film is a romantic comedy (rom-com).
We can interpret this as the characters are looking into
each other’s eyes and they aren’t looking at the knife or
plate which are the significant props used within this
scene. The comedy element comes from the fact in
which the female character is pointing into the man’s
direction. This suggests an element of comedy as when
we first look at the still-image we automatically think
that she’s going to stab him
