2. VIANA
Viana is already starting to develop into a
diverse place with urban qualities. In the
central point at Viana Station three different
zones meet; the informal residential area, a
more formal, urban area and an industrial area.
These zones are yet very clearly separated.
Viana is physically divided in two parts by a wide
highway coming from Luanda City, and the paralell
trainrail.
On the northside there is mainly informal but
organised settlement, and on the south-side an
organised centre and residential area originally built
by the Portuguese. Here there is a certain urban
environment with a main avenue surrounded by
shops and services, a park, a soccerfield, and schools.
Behind it there is a residential area on the one
side with two-storey concrete houses, and streets
organised within a ring-road. On the other side there
is an industrial area.
The existing crossing bridge that goes from theTrain
Station over the highway and to the main central
area, is used both as a transit point and as a market,
with people selling goods as you pass by.

MARIA & CARLOS
I own a small peice of land in the interior,
where my relatives grow fruits and
vegetables that I bring to Viana by train. I
have a food stand at the market next-door,
and I also have people selling for me at the
other markets in the area.
My husband works in the city centre and
take the train everyday.

ESPERANCA
I work at the market by the train station,
selling fruit and vegetables that I buy from
someone else. The salary we split 50/50.
In the weekends I work in the centre of
Luanda as a maid. Before I used to go by
chapa, but since the railway opened I now
take the train which is a lot cheaper. 30 Kw,
as opposed to 100 Kw which you pay for
the chapa. ADMIRO
I work as a chapa driver (:the
informal public bus).
During a day I drive back and forth
from Viana to Luanda between 4
and 8 times, depending on the traffic.
Luanda has a huge problem with
traffic. There are too many cars, and
the road network is is not sufficient
enough to support it. In addition
the roads are in poor condition,
especially during the rainy season.
TINA
I go to school in the morning, and
in the afternoon I hang out with
my friends and do my homework.
I have a younger sister that I always
bring along with me as my parents
work long hours and only come
home at night.
ANTONIO
I am a welder, and have my
own shop in the main street
where I collect scrap metal
and recycle it into products
that I can sell. I also sell gravel,
and my wife sell food and
beverages at the same place.
