CASE STUDY: VIANA Viana is a peri-urban area becoming increas- ingly attractive due to the reopened railway that runs through it.The area is divided phys- ically by the rail- and highway, and socially by an informal and a formal side. Bridging this divide is crucial for obtaining an inclusive and diverse urban environment. Our project works with a cross-section, facilitat- ing accessibility and inter-active civic spaces.
- 3. VIANA Viana is alreadystarting to develop into a diverse place with urban qualities. In the central point at Viana Station three different zones meet; the informal residential area, a more formal, urban area and an industrial area. These zones are yet very clearly separated. INFORMAL SETTLEMENT INFORMAL SETTLEMENT FORMAL SETTLEMENT FORMAL SETTLEMENT INDUSTRIAL INDUSTRIAL A LACK OF CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES OF THE RAIL 1 STEP 4 EP ST Viana is physically divided in two parts by a wide highway coming from Luanda City, and the paralell trainrail. On the northside there is mainly informal but organised settlement, and on the south-side an STEP 2 organised centre and residential area originally built by the Portuguese. Here there is a certain urban environment with a main avenue surrounded by shops and services, a park, a soccerfield, and schools. STEP 3 Behind it there is a residential area on the one side with two-storey concrete houses, and streets organised within a ring-road. On the other side there is an industrial area. 1 STEP 4 EP ST The existing crossing bridge that goes from the Train Station over the highway and to the main central area, is used both as a transit point and as a market, CROSSECTION INFRASTRUCTURAL INTERVENTION POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPT with people selling goods as you pass by.
