The Engineering Record was added as part of SAP PLM 7. It is a flexible object in SAP
PLM which helps to group all kinds of objects to guide them through a controlled
process and supports the complete engineering change process. Many have not made
the transition to SAP PLM 7 yet; therefore, I wanted to provide some highlights of the
Engineering Record to get you thinking of the benefits of making the transition.
1. The Engineering Record acts as the single object for the change request and
execution of the change. Key data from start to finish of the change will be documented
and carried on the Engineering Record. It is the “single source of truth” for the change.
2. The header of the Engineering Record carries key information such as the description
of the change, the reason for change, priority, and change coordinator. These attributes
can be utilized to select the correct workflow and overall process for the change. The
LeverX Integrated Process Solution (IPS) has access to this key data as parts of its
overall engine for selecting the correct workflow template and participants.
3. You capture affected items of the change on the Engineering Record, including
materials, documents, BOMs, recipes, and specifications. You can add items to the
Engineering Record from where-used lists, SAP PLM 7 Object Navigator, or a variety of
other areas in SAP PLM 7. This makes it easy to identify the impacted items of the
change.
4. For each affected item on the Engineering Record, you can add additional attributes
that further define the overall impact of the change. As an example, for each affected
material you might add an attribute of how you will disposition current inventory,
including if you will scrap, re-work, or use up current inventory.

5. SAP Classification is integrated to the Engineering Record, making it easy to capture
additional business attributes. This might include such things as location requesting
the change, project numbers, or overall scrap cost of the change. These additional
attributes searching and generation of key reports.
6. You can easily add supporting attachments to the Engineering Record. These
attachments ride along as part of the change and are available for the reviewers and
those approving the change. This again supports the concept of "single source of truth"
for the change.
7. The Engineering Record has a fully configurable status network that can mimic your
current phased based approach to handling changes. At any point, you can jump
backward and forwards in the status network based on your business rules. You define
this in configuration. The status also controls what data can be updated. This is
important, as once the change is approved you want to have very tight control over who
can change information such as affected items or description of the overall change.
8. The Engineering Change Master is used as part of the overall change process to carry
out changes against the objects associated to the Engineering, including applying
effectivity date for the changes. The Engineering Change Master is automatically
generated and assigned to Engineering Record at the status you choose. Additionally,
you can define that objects are automatically copied to the Engineering Change Master
at a specific status. This sets up the change for execution and implementation.

9. The LeverX IPS solution allows you to workflow the change process from start to
finish. You have complete visibility of where the change is at and who is processing it.
You can have different workflows based on the attributes of the change, including the
reason for change and priority. Workflow agents can be selected based on these
attributes. Additionally, you can enable digital signatures for at each workflow step,
which is 21 CFR Part 11 compliant.
10. Key change data can be extracted to BI or reporting tools such as SAP Lumira,
QlikView, and Tableau for reporting and analysis. This will allow you to generate key
metric reports, such as how many changes, how long are they taking, and what are the
steps which are taking the longest.
