I am sure we all have these thoughts from time to time. To be realistic, the only person you can
change is yourself. Oftentimes, it is not feasible to wait for others to change and see things our way,

For example, Hewlett Packard (HP) understands that there are communications problems between

My operational definition of social justice (the distribution of advantage and disadvantage within a
society) is controversial to my social justice (LGBT Liberation) because they have a disadvantage in
today 's society. It 's controversial because people today are afraid to come out because they 're
afraid of other people 's reactions. Everyone in today 's society depends on other people 's opinions.

The year is 2015 and I can't imagine not having the freedom I do today. Marriage equality is a very
recent topic in history. It wasn't very long ago that laws prohibited the marriage of same–sex
couples. I have decided to investigate the history of marriage equality and the organizations that
helped make the dream come true. In order to fully understand the changes that occurred, and to
comprehend the level of discrimination that was felt in the homosexual culture, one must first
understand the history of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) community.
The harsh history of the LGBTQ community, and discrimination that was imposed on them and the
organizations that strived to advocate for the LGBTQ community on a local, regional and national
level is what eventually lead to the Supreme Court ruling on June 26th, 2015, stating that states
cannot ban same–sex marriage.
Inclusion and acceptance is a basic human right. Without that people can suffer a myriad of social
problems such as depression, anxiety, lack of healthy relationships and physical illness.
Organizations that are LGBTQ friendly or are specifically for fostering healthy LGBTQ
relationships are all part of the history of how Human Services have helped give a voice to the
LGBTQ community and by doing this gave them the status and respect needed to get them where

On March 15, 2013, the Congressional Quarterly Researcher (CQR) issued a report covering the
issue of gay marriage. In their article, Gay Marriage, the CQR discusses the controversy of curbs on
same–sex marriage, as well as if the Supreme Court will end these curbs. Within this larger
controversy of same–sex marriage, the CQR points out four issues dealing with the topic at hand.
The first issue questions whether the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) improperly denies federal
benefits to same sex couples. Another issue covered in the report is if California voters violated the
Constitution by passing Proposition 8. A further topic at hand is if legalizing same–sex marriage
would hurt traditional marriage. The last issue is if the Supreme Court should recognize a

A group of four women who felt like the country needed to change the way women were treated
took action and started the National Organization for Women. While many women still worked, they
were paid less than their male counterparts. Many employers didn't view women's pay as necessary
for the family, they saw it as extra money the family could use. 'Marriage Bar' was used by many
employers, where many married women could not work certain occupations. Even though many still
worked and kept their jobs, they were paid very little and not treated equally.

I...My chosen topic is Gay Rights– more specifically marriage equality. Public opinion in the U.S.
shows the majority support for the legal recognition of same–sex marriages. This issue is more
likely to be supported by women and people under 50. My thesis is that marriage equality a civil
right, rights we are born with as a citizen of the U.S. which the government cannot interfere with or
suppress. (Lecture Notes 8/27). Over the past decade, marriage equality has become an even larger
and more controversial issue. The issue of same–sex marriage equality is being supported today in
33 states by the means of laws, court cases and social changes in our society.
II... The issue of equal legal right to marry for same–sex couples first surfaced in court around the
1970s but was immediately rejected. In the 1990s several California lawyer's organizations
supported a proposed bill to permit same–sex marriage. In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed into
law the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being strictly between a man and a
woman, and expresses that states do not have to recognize same–sex marriages that occur in other
states. In 1997, Hawaii enacts a "domestic partnership" legislation with limited rights for same–sex
partners. That same year, anti–same–sex marriage laws were in place in 12 states. In Baker v. State
(1999), the Vermont Supreme Court concludes that

Homosexuals have the right to marry in five states: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, and Vermont. Leaving 45 states either unclear, such as California, which granted gay
marriage in June of 2008 which was then appealed in Nov. 2008, or to ban gay marriage, such as
Florida and Arizona. New York, Rhode Island and Maryland ban same sex marriage, but recognize
unions from other jurisdictions (Badgett 2). This uncertainty began with the Defense of marriage act

marriage in America. On February 23, 2011 President Barack Obama stated section 3 to be

The National Organization for Women broke barriers for the feminist movement. With over 200,000
members, NOW become one of the substantial influences of the feminist movement. The National
Organization for Women was founded in in 1966 when Betty Friedan and other women's rights
activist organized their first conference in Washington D.D.. This new organization was born after
the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's lack of enforcing the protections under

This organization's pure goal is to fight the effects of poverty with new lawsuits and education
program. Southern Poverty Law Center's strategy is filing a lawsuit for damages on behalf of the
victims of the hate group harassments, threats and their violence. They represent the most of victims
of hate groups such as extremist organizations such as Ku Klux Klan also known as KKK. One of
the cases that resulted in legacy of Southern Poverty Law Center is that a case of YMCA in
Montgomery. In this case, what YMCA did was not accepting two black children because of their
race violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In the end, Judge Johnson ordered the YMCA to end its
discriminatory practices. By winning the case, it fired the civil rights movement in south. Giving
hopes to southerners that it is possible to change the society. Another law suit that was given credit
to Southern Poverty Law Center is that Persons vs. Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. This was
happened in 1982, a prison guard Bobby Person, and a black prison guard was harassed and
threatened by Ku Klux Klan. Even when the lawsuit was started, Ku Klux Klan did not stop the
harassment and threats. During the litigation, the court ordered prohibiting anyone from interfering.
At the end of this lawsuit, in 1985, court issued Ku Klux Klan from harassing, threatening and
harming any black people or white people who are associated with black. I didn't think this
organization was associated with the KKK and would actually win against from white superior
court. Who would have ever thought that this group is led by white male and that they were fighting
against other whites to protect non–whites? This group was the most unexpected and surprised me
