Statement of the Problem
To what extent do the students of Black River High School engage in the consumption of
alcohol and what can be done to minimize this problem?
1. What are the factors that encourage students of the age 11-19 to engage in the
consumption of alcohol?
2. What are some the effects of the consumption of alcohol?
3. What can be done to control or stop the issue of these students consuming alcoholic
beverages?

Reasons for Selecting the Area of Research
The Black River High School is currently enrolled with approximately 4000 students
combining both shifts, and as a prominent student of Black River High School, from the
researcher’s observation, it is now evident that it has become the norm for under aged boys
and girls to be associating themselves in the consumption of alcohol. The researcher has
heard on the other hand from students on the compound talking about the types of alcohol
they enjoy drinking and this turns out to be highly rated topic. The researcher found this topic
very interesting since it is a social issue but mainly because under aged students are part
taking in the consumption of alcohol, which is absolutely wrong.
In addition to this, students/young teens are definitely easily influenced by others of their
peers to consume alcohol, for example a factor is attending social events. When students
attend parties or any other social events, they tend to bring alcohol with them resulting in
overly-consumption. The researcher insists on finding measures that could be implemented to
alleviate this problem.

Method of Investigation
A printed questionnaire was used to collect data for this research. The questionnaire as a tool
for collecting data has a number of advantages:
 It allows for easy collection of data
 It guarantees total confidentiality of the participants
 It is not time consuming
 It reaches a large number of persons

Questionnaire
Survey of the level of alcohol use among students of the Black River High School.
This is a survey being carried out on the Black River high School student body researching
the level of extent to which these students consume alcohol. This is being done as a Social
Studies School Based Assessment. However, the participants are required to be completely
honest. Since you are not required to write your name, no one will know who answered a
particular questionnaire.

Procedures for Data Collection
It would have been quite impossible for the researcher to get a response from EVERY student
in particular at the high school, within the ages 11-19, in St. Elizabeth where the research was
done. So in a school of approximately 4000 students combined with both shifts, which only 5
students from each grade level were necessary in order to ensure accurate conclusions.
So the researcher therefore decided to choose the students by randomly selecting students.
The 35 students were provided with questionnaires, instances where the students who were
interested and returned them the next day.

Presentation of Data
Of the 35 questionnaires distributed, 30 were returned. The researcher utilized various graphs
to present the collected data. The following graphs depict the information that was received
from the questionnaires.

The Bar Graph in figure 1 shows the number of students and their age groups that part take in
the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Maximum amount of students partaking in alcohol
drinking occurs within the age group of 17-19 (the young adults).

The Pie Chart in figure 2.1 shows the most common alcohol beverage consumed.
Maximum amount of students consumed Spirits, secondly discovered was Beers,
others were named such as Guinness, Smirnoff, Heineken, and the least was Wine.
With:
Spirits being represented by the colour blue showing 46%.
Beer being represented by the colour green showing 22%.
Wine being represented by the colour black showing 15%.
Others being represented by the colour purple showing 17%.

The Bar Chart in figure 2.2 depicts the students in their various group’s grades and the
percentages of how it has affected their school performances. Students in 7-9 age group were
least affected, 10 and 11 grade increased and the highest were found in the 6th form 12 and 13
grades. With:
7th graders being 3%
8th graders being 7%
9th graders being 5%
10th graders being 20%
11th grader being 10%
12th grader being 25%
13th grader being 30%

The following Pie Chart in figure 3 shows responses to question 15 asking the students at
what age did they begin drinking. So it has been concluded that majority of students started in
the age group 11-13 with 53%, about 25% were found in the age group 17-19 and the least
was discovered in the age group 14-16 which was 25% and others were 10%. With:

The Pie Chart in figure 4 shows the amount of students who gave responses to question 18 in
the questionnaire. 40% said they would think about it, secondly with approximately 10% left
it unanswered, 16% both said yes and already decided to and finally 18% chose I do not
drink. With:

Analysis and Interpretation of Data
 According to the collected data, it can be said that 41%of the students mostly
consumed alcoholic beverages in the age group 17-19, but started drinking these
beverages when they were in between the ages of 11-13. Whilst you have 18% who
does not take part take in drinking.
 Based on collected data, it can also be said that 60% of the responses by the students
who began to consume alcohol, did so on their own behalf. Whilst 10% of them
suffered peer pressure to try it out.
 Data collected have shown that the students mostly drank these beverages at parties.
 Also it was gathered that 39% of the students had gotten drunk due to their limitless
amount of consumption of alcohol. Hence, losing self-control and consciousness.
 According to the data collected, 16% of the students are willing to stop consuming
alcohol, whilst 18% have stopped completely. At the same time, 40% gave it a
thought and another 32% decided not to stop drinking these beverages despite the fact
that it influences their behaviour negatively.

 Apparently, for those students who are willing to stop drinking these beverages, they
plan to find other leisure activities and 5% of them said they wold visit a professional
for extra help, and the others who were willing to stop, decided that there were other
method to obtain that would help them to stop.

Presentation of Findings
 Students between the ages 17-19 is involved in the consumption of alcohol the most.
 The majority of the students who consumed alcohol, did so on their own behalf.
 Most students who consumed alcohol, were negatively affected in their school
attendances due to hangover from parties and having to wake too early for school.
Also these same students have been affected in their personal life leaving them
partially unconscious and not having self-control prior to the consumption of having
too much alcoholic drinks.
 Many students are hiding away from even the thought of stop drinking these
beverages. Majority is half and half, they will only give it a thought (not necessarily
going to call it quits) but does believe avoiding parties can lessen the habit. Most
prefer to find new leisure activities.

Recommendation and Implementation Strategy
 Parents should ensure that it is their number one priority to educate their child about
the consequences of during from the beginning to end, and they should ensure that
their child(ren) do not attend social events that encourages the under aged to be
pushed to start drinking alcoholic beverages.
 Parents should limit the amount of parties their child(ren) attends and the adults who
promote these events should offer ID servings and encourage the under aged to refrain
from drinking alcohol.
 Government should implement strict rules and regulations and penalties for the
promoters of these events who condone under aged children in the consumption of
alcoholic beverages and this social issue will be lessened in communities and the
country.

  • 1. 1 Statement of the Problem To what extent do the students of Black River High School engage in the consumption of alcohol and what can be done to minimize this problem? 1. What are the factors that encourage students of the age 11-19 to engage in the consumption of alcohol? 2. What are some the effects of the consumption of alcohol? 3. What can be done to control or stop the issue of these students consuming alcoholic beverages?
  • 2. 2 Reasons for Selecting the Area of Research The Black River High School is currently enrolled with approximately 4000 students combining both shifts, and as a prominent student of Black River High School, from the researcher’s observation, it is now evident that it has become the norm for under aged boys and girls to be associating themselves in the consumption of alcohol. The researcher has heard on the other hand from students on the compound talking about the types of alcohol they enjoy drinking and this turns out to be highly rated topic. The researcher found this topic very interesting since it is a social issue but mainly because under aged students are part taking in the consumption of alcohol, which is absolutely wrong. In addition to this, students/young teens are definitely easily influenced by others of their peers to consume alcohol, for example a factor is attending social events. When students attend parties or any other social events, they tend to bring alcohol with them resulting in overly-consumption. The researcher insists on finding measures that could be implemented to alleviate this problem.
  • 3. 3 Method of Investigation A printed questionnaire was used to collect data for this research. The questionnaire as a tool for collecting data has a number of advantages:  It allows for easy collection of data  It guarantees total confidentiality of the participants  It is not time consuming  It reaches a large number of persons
  • 4. 4 Data Collection Instrument Questionnaire Survey of the level of alcohol use among students of the Black River High School. This is a survey being carried out on the Black River high School student body researching the level of extent to which these students consume alcohol. This is being done as a Social Studies School Based Assessment. However, the participants are required to be completely honest. Since you are not required to write your name, no one will know who answered a particular questionnaire. 1. What is your age? 11-13 14-16 17-19 2. State your gender. 3.   • 8. 8 Procedures for Data Collection It would have been quite impossible for the researcher to get a response from EVERY student in particular at the high school, within the ages 11-19, in St. Elizabeth where the research was done. So in a school of approximately 4000 students combined with both shifts, which only 5 students from each grade level were necessary in order to ensure accurate conclusions. So the researcher therefore decided to choose the students by randomly selecting students. The 35 students were provided with questionnaires, instances where the students who were interested and returned them the next day.
  • 9. 9 Presentation of Data Of the 35 questionnaires distributed, 30 were returned. The researcher utilized various graphs to present the collected data. The following graphs depict the information that was received from the questionnaires. Figure 1 The Bar Graph in figure 1 shows the number of students and their age groups that part take in the consumption of alcoholic beverages.   • 10. 10 Figure 2.1 The Pie Chart in figure 2.1 shows the most common alcohol beverage consumed. Maximum amount of students consumed Spirits, secondly discovered was Beers, others were named such as Guinness, Smirnoff, Heineken, and the least was Wine. With: Spirits being represented by the colour blue showing 46%. Beer being represented by the colour green showing 22%. Wine being represented by the colour black showing 15%.   • 11. 11 Figure 2.2 The Bar Chart in figure 2.2 depicts the students in their various group’s grades and the percentages of how it has affected their school performances. Students in 7-9 age group were least affected, 10 and 11 grade increased and the highest were found in the 6th form 12 and 13 grades.   • 12. 12 Figure 3 The following Pie Chart in figure 3 shows responses to question 15 asking the students at what age did they begin drinking. So it has been concluded that majority of students started in the age group 11-13 with 53%, about 25% were found in the age group 17-19 and the least was discovered in the age group 14-16 which was 25% and others were 10%.   • 13. 13 Figure 4 The Pie Chart in figure 4 shows the amount of students who gave responses to question 18 in the questionnaire. 40% said they would think about it, secondly with approximately 10% left it unanswered, 16% both said yes and already decided to and finally 18% chose I do not drink.   • 14. 14 Analysis and Interpretation of Data  According to the collected data, it can be said that 41%of the students mostly consumed alcoholic beverages in the age group 17-19, but started drinking these beverages when they were in between the ages of 11-13. Whilst you have 18% who does not take part take in drinking.  Based on collected data, it can also be said that 60% of the responses by the students who began to consume alcohol, did so on their own behalf. Whilst 10% of them suffered peer pressure to try it out.  Data collected have shown that the students mostly drank these beverages at parties.  Also it was gathered that 39% of the students had gotten drunk due to their limitless amount of consumption of alcohol. Hence, losing self-control and consciousness.  According to the data collected, 16% of the students are willing to stop consuming alcohol, whilst 18% have stopped completely. At the same time, 40% gave it a thought and another 32% decided not to stop drinking these beverages despite the fact that it influences their behaviour negatively.
  • 15. 15  Apparently, for those students who are willing to stop drinking these beverages, they plan to find other leisure activities and 5% of them said they wold visit a professional for extra help, and the others who were willing to stop, decided that there were other method to obtain that would help them to stop.
  • 16. 16 Presentation of Findings  Students between the ages 17-19 is involved in the consumption of alcohol the most.  The majority of the students who consumed alcohol, did so on their own behalf.  Most students who consumed alcohol, were negatively affected in their school attendances due to hangover from parties and having to wake too early for school. Also these same students have been affected in their personal life leaving them partially unconscious and not having self-control prior to the consumption of having too much alcoholic drinks.  Many students are hiding away from even the thought of stop drinking these beverages. Majority is half and half, they will only give it a thought (not necessarily going to call it quits) but does believe avoiding parties can lessen the habit. Most prefer to find new leisure activities.
  • 17. 17 Recommendation and Implementation Strategy  Parents should ensure that it is their number one priority to educate their child about the consequences of during from the beginning to end, and they should ensure that their child(ren) do not attend social events that encourages the under aged to be pushed to start drinking alcoholic beverages.  Parents should limit the amount of parties their child(ren) attends and the adults who promote these events should offer ID servings and encourage the under aged to refrain from drinking alcohol.  Government should implement strict rules and regulations and penalties for the promoters of these events who condone under aged children in the consumption of alcoholic beverages and this social issue will be lessened in communities and the country.
