2. History Of Track And Field
• Track and fieldhas been around since the start of the Olympics in Ancient Greece in 776 B.C.
• It was createdalongside religious events and celebrations for the Greekgods where men
(no womenwere allowed) could show off their athletic abilities.
• Fromthere it spread to the Romans who continued the games until the Christian Emperor Theodosius I
banned them in 394 A.D. because of their ties to pagan beliefs.
• While it has grownsince its inception, the firstgames included categories such as sprint races, long jump,
discus, shot put and javelin.
• The track and fieldevents in these ancient times still remainin today’s sport.
• Victors were praised and celebratedby their home cities for their success in these games.
3. Development Of Track And Fild
• The developmentof Track and Field in India has been a long-termeffort,with a number of organizations and
individuals playing a role in its growth.
• In recent years,the developmentof the sport has been drivenby the efforts of the Athletics Federationof
India (AFI), which is the governing body for track and field in India.
• AFI has been actively promoting the sport through various initiatives and is working to improve its
infrastructure and create a comprehensivetraining and coaching systemfor athletes.
• At the national level,the AFI organizesvarious national level competitions such as the National Open
Athletics Championship, National School Athletics Championships, and the National Inter-State Athletics
Championship.
• These events have helped to raise the standards of track and field in India and attract more athletes to
participate in the sport.
4. • The AFI has also signed agreements with the International Athletics
Federation (IAAF) and the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) that
allow Indian athletes to compete in international events such as the
Asian Games and the IAAF World Championships
• The AFI is also working to improve its coaching and training
facilities, which has led to the establishment of the National High
Performance
