2. HESTORY OF THE TRACK AND FIELD
■ Dates back to the Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. At that time, the only event held was the
stadion, a sprint of approximately 200 yards.
■ Over the centuries, the events of track and field have evolved to become the modern track and
field events of today.
■ In the 19th century, the first organized track and field competitions were held in England, and
track and field events were included in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
■ The amateur International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was founded in 1912,
and track and field has been an Olympic sport ever since.
■ By the mid-20th century, the sport had become professionalized and more popular around the
world.
■ International competitions such as the World Championships, the Pan-American Games, the
Commonwealth Games, and the IAAF Grand Prix Series have all been established.

governing body for track and field in India.
■ AFI has been actively promoting the sport through various initiatives

comprehensive training and coaching system for athletes.
