 Sandalwood plantation done in the year 2011, at present the
age is 10 years.
 She stated that stem cracking indicates beginning of heartwood
formation.
 The Income shall be in Rupees lakhs to the farmers.
 South Indian climate is most suitable for sandalwood cultivation.
 Approximately 20 kgs heartwood can be obtained from each tree at age
above 15 years.
 According to her mango, Guava, Tamarind, Jamun and curry leaf are
the best primary hosts.
 Spacing adopted 12’ x 12’ and host plant shall be planted at
6’x6’distance which can accommodate 300 plants per acre.
 As per Smt. Kavitha the heartwood yield for tree is 20 kgs x 300 trees
per acre = 6000 kgs @ Rs.8000/- per Kg = Rs.4,80,00,000/- per acre.

Demand & Supply
 Among all sandalwood species in the world, S.album heartwood gives
maximum odour and yields most valuable.
 The national demand for sandalwood is in the tune of 20,000 Metric tons per
annum and supply is 200 MT per annum. So huge gap is noticed.
 Sandalwood oil demand is estimated to 1000 tons in the international
markets.
 Indian sandal wood had monopoly in trade and 90% supply was from India
 At present the Sandalwood and oil is only available through department
seized material and limited auctions.
 There is a huge gap between demand & supply. Likely to stay for few years
from now.
 The stock at Sandalwood factory is its all time low and possibly slow down
production

  • 36. Demand & Supply  Among all sandalwood species in the world, S.album heartwood gives maximum odour and yields most valuable.  The national demand for sandalwood is in the tune of 20,000 Metric tons per annum and supply is 200 MT per annum. So huge gap is noticed.  Sandalwood oil demand is estimated to 1000 tons in the international markets.  Indian sandal wood had monopoly in trade and 90% supply was from India  At present the Sandalwood and oil is only available through department seized material and limited auctions.  There is a huge gap between demand & supply. Likely to stay for few years from now.  The stock at Sandalwood factory is its all time low and possibly slow down production 36
