2. Government of India organised a one day meeting on NITI Aayog of Southern
states for alignment of Agriculture activities with MGNREGS for doubling
farmers income at Taj Krishna Hotel, Hyderabad on 31.07.2018.
The higher officials of southern states in the cadre of Prl. Secretaries and
Directors have attended the meeting to discuss the activities to be taken up for
increasing the farmer’s income by including Agroforestry and Bamboo in
farmers fields.
In the above meeting, Smt. Kavitha Mishra of Kavital Village, Raichur Dist. of
Karnataka State has given a useful presentation on “doubling of farmers income
by cultivating mixed cropping i.e. fruit crop cultivation with sandalwood
plantation”.
The officers and Director of Horticulture have been impressed on the
presentation given by Smt. Kavitha Mishra and immediately planned for visiting
above farmer field with some officers and progressive farmers to study the
suitability to Telangana climate.

Density Block Plantation (HDBP)
13. Sandalwood plantation done in the year 2011, at present the
age is 10 years.
She stated that stem cracking indicates beginning of heartwood
formation.
The Income shall be in Rupees lakhs to the farmers.
South Indian climate is most suitable for sandalwood cultivation.
Approximately 20 kgs heartwood can be obtained from each tree at age
above 15 years.
According to her mango, Guava, Tamarind, Jamun and curry leaf are
the best primary hosts.
Spacing adopted 12’ x 12’ and host plant shall be planted at
6’x6’distance which can accommodate 300 plants per acre.
As per Smt. Kavitha the heartwood yield for tree is 20 kgs x 300 trees
per acre = 6000 kgs @ Rs.8000/- per Kg = Rs.4,80,00,000/- per acre.

36. Demand & Supply
Among all sandalwood species in the world, S.album heartwood gives
maximum odour and yields most valuable.
The national demand for sandalwood is in the tune of 20,000 Metric tons per
annum and supply is 200 MT per annum. So huge gap is noticed.
Sandalwood oil demand is estimated to 1000 tons in the international
markets.
Indian sandal wood had monopoly in trade and 90% supply was from India
At present the Sandalwood and oil is only available through department
seized material and limited auctions.
There is a huge gap between demand & supply. Likely to stay for few years
from now.
The stock at Sandalwood factory is its all time low and possibly slow down
production
