2. Ø ATechnique for the separation of a mixture
by passing it in solution or suspension
through a medium in which thecomponents
move at different rates.
ABOUT CHROMITOGRAPHY
INVENTION
Ø During the research on plant pigments in
the year 1900 Mr. Michail TSVET was
invented chromatography
3. v 1.Liquide chromatography
v 2.Paper chromatography
v 3.Gas chromatography
v 4.Thin layer chromatography
TYPES OF CHROMATOGRAPHY
v 4.Thin layer chromatography
v From the above we chosen "paper
chromatography" for this experiment.
4. ABOUT LEAF CHROMATOGRAPHY :
Ø Most leaves are in green colour
due to chlorophyll.
LEAF CHROMATOGRAPHY DESCRIPTION
Ø This substances is important
in photo synthetics.
Ø In this experiment the different
pigments present in a leaf are
separated using paper
chromatography.
5. MATERIAL SELECTED FOR
EXPERIMENT:
EXPERIMENT
AIMS:
Selection of photosynthetic pigments using
paper chromatography
EXPERIMENT:
vSoft Green leaves
vScissors, Mortar and Pestle or food processor
vAcetone/ nail polishremover
vFlat Coffee Filters
vPencil or Straw
vFilter papers
6. q Use the scissors to cut up enough leaves to
make ¼ cup ofpieces.
q Use the food processor or mortar and pestle
to grind the leaves into a fine pulp.
q Pair the pulpy leaves into the cup.
q Pour enough isopropyl alcohol over the
leaves to cover them stir.
Cut out strip of coffee filter paper about 6
EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE:
q Cut out strip of coffee filter paper about 6
inches long and 1 inch wide.
q Attach the strip to the pencil with a piece of
tape. Make sur the bottom of the strip
qhangs straight.
q Adjust the length of the filter paper strip so
that the bottom just touches the green liquid
in the cup.
q Checking every couple minutes, wait for
the band of solvent to migrate to the top of
the filter paper. Different colored bands
should become evident along thestrip.
q Last strip and try to identify thepigments.
8. Ø*Innovation taking to things that exist and putting
Øthem together in a new way
Ø*This leaf Chromatography experiments from one of
my favourite ‘Playdough to Plato’.
WHY INNOVATION IS BEST PRACTICES
my favourite ‘Playdough to Plato’.
Ø*It shows what colours make up a leaf and why they
Øchange colour in autumm.
