2. MTV was launched in August 1st, 1981 it is
an American cable television channel based
in New York City. It was originally launched
to play music videos however, currently it
now broadcasts a variety of scripted and
reality TV shows which has greatly
benefited its success.
When the original purpose of MTV was to be "Music Television", it
played music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, guided by on-air
personalities known as VJs, or video jockeys. Although the original
MTV channel no longer plays music videos 24/7, several of its spin-
off channels do so, including MTV Hits and MTV Jams. In addition,
viewers can play music videos on-demand at MTV.com. MTV
continues to support a broad selection of music videos on its
international channels as well.
The first music video ever shown on MTV was The Buggles “Video
Killed the Radio Star” and the second music video shown was Pat
Benatar‟s “You Better Run”.
Due to it being so successful it now has many sister channels which
include; Nickellodeon, Nicktoons, Comedy Central and more.
3. 4Music is a music and entertainment channel
in the United Kingdom, it was launched August
15th 2008 and replace „The Hits‟. The channel
launched with an on-screen countdown
counting down from ten minutes down to
zero. During the countdown, clips from
popular music videos were faded through the
screen including clips from promotions for the
channel. It broadcasts 24 hours a day and is in
partnership with Channel 4.
The channel now has a combination of music videos and
comedy (shows that were once shown on Channel4).
Due to its success 4 music now has many of its own
chart shows which include:
• Today‟s 4 music Top 10
• Your Official Top 20
• UK Hot 40
In addition to this, 4Music also airs coverage of big
festival events that are popular with their young
audience such as „T4 On The Beach‟ and
„V Festival‟.
4. Kerrang! TV is a digital televison
station owned by Box Televison,
which is loosely connected to the
magazine, Kerrang! And mostly airs
the pop rock genre. As of 2005, all
of its programme content is music
videos.
The station has an annual video countdown called the Rock 100,
which covers the 100 most requested videos on the station (Rock or
otherwise) in the previous year. It mostly shows British and American
artists however European artists are shown on the worldwide channel.
The first broadcast of Kerrang! TV had a countdown of voter's most
desired videos. The most popular choice and the first video ever
shown on Kerrang! TV was Nirvanas Smells Like Teen Spirit, Limp
Bizkit‟s Break Stuff and Everlas‟s Black Jesus which were also in the
first 3 videos ever played on the channel.
