2. WHAT IS A MUSIC VIDEO?
A music video is a short film that is used to accompany a song. It is
used to create a visual representation of a song. The main purpose of
a music video is to promote the artist and their music. Although,
some artists may choose to make music videos for artistic purposes.
Music videos help the
audience interpret hidden meanings
behind the song and understand the
artist point of view easily.
4. • In 1926, with the perfection of the Audion amplifier tube and
introduction of the Vitaophone system, sound films with incorporated
synchronized dialogue came about. These were called ‘talking picture’
better known as ‘talkies’ (among people of the early 1930s) which
resulted in numerous musical short films being produced.
• The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first film to sync audio and image. This
meant that for the first time you could actually see music performance
that wasn’t live.
• After the release of the Jazz Singer, talkies
became more and more commonplace.
Vitaphone shorts (produced by Warner
Bros WB an American entertainment
company.) featured many bands, vocalists
and dancers.
• Early 1930s cartoons featured popular
musicians performing their hit songs on-
camera in live-action segments during the
cartoons.
5. In the 1930’s, The Spooney Melodey
series were the first to introduce the
concept of short-films mixing live-action
footage of the performer. It was shown
at the movie theaters before the main
presentations. So now you didn’t actually
need to see a full feature talkie to here
music and sound, you could see the
performer playing in quick segments of a
music
In late 1950s, the Scopitone was invented. This was
a visual jukebox which was invented in France. Short
films were being produced by many artists such as
Serge Gainsberg, Francoise Hardy, Jacques Brel etc
to accompany their songs.
7. In 1981, the U.S video
channel MTV launched, airing “Video
Killed The Radio Star" and beginning
an era of 24-hour-a-day music on
television.
• Videos began to be produced for music
programs such as Top of the Pops in
Britian.
• Promotional videos for groups such as
The Beatles were being produced.
• Top of the Pops was a British music
chart television programme. It
began playing music videos in the
late 1970s however, they limited
the amount of videos they could
use. This effectively, would make
viewers want to see the video again
and in the long run, increase song
sales.
