Music videos have a history dating back to the earliest days of film. Early promotional shorts were sometimes set to music and many early Disney films were based around songs from upcoming films. In the 1950s and 1960s, early forms of music videos emerged such as Soundies, which were short films of musical selections usually featuring a band on a movie set. The launch of MTV in 1981 marked the beginning of an era of 24-hour music television and significantly contributed to the rise of music videos as a mainstream art form.
