A Critical Analysis Of A Critique Of Thread City
Critique of "Thread City" When I went to see Thread City on Sunday for the matinee performance
on Sunday, I was immediately surprised with how many people were there. At my old school, I was
used to high attendance at school performances but never the need to reserve seats or wait in line to
get into the theatre. While I realize that I am both new to this school and not a part of the theatre
department, I was really surprised with the ability of the cast and crew to pull off such an effects–
heavy performance; one that truly wouldn't have been possible without significant funding and faith
in Eastern's theatre department. With the opening scene of the show, it was the director's choice to
cast many voices all throughout the theatre–all speaking either English or Spanish, which left me
confused with what was happening. Shortly thereafter it was made clear by voice–over narration
that the play was about the history of Willimantic; specifically, the immigrants who came into
Willimantic to work in thread factories and provide better lives for their families. As the majority of
the cast comes on stage, none of them were speaking. In fact, the only way to tell what was
happening was to watch their specific movements, and their dancing, and to see how the characters
were interacting with each other. It became clear that the director had decided to make it mostly a
nonverbal show, relying on movements and special effects to tell the story. All of the movements the
cast made were very methodical and flowed with the scene and the character either moving with or
beside them. Truly, the creation of a non–verbal play caused me, and I believe the audience, to pay
closer attention to sound and movement in order to piece together the story for ourselves. Along
with the choice to not make the actors/actresses speak, the show also relied quite heavily on special
effects; using screens, props, lights, and sound to create each new scene. For instance, the
photographer/artist was often brought out between scenes of travel in order to sketch what appeared
on the screen. When the cast was on the boat heading to the US, the scene was filled with animated
seagulls and the theatre was filled with sounds of the ocean and seagulls

Biography of a Runaway Slave
Miguel Barnet's Biography of a Runaway Slave: Testimonial Literature as History
Few documentary sources exist from the Caribbean islands and the Latin American mainland
written by Africans or their descendants that describe their life under enslavement. In Brazil, two
mulatto abolitionists wrote sketchy descriptions of their personal experiences, and one
autobiography of a black man was published before emancipation. In contrast, several thousand
slave narratives and eight full–length autobiographies were published in the United States before the
outbreak of the Civil War (1860–1865) (Conrad, p. xix). In Cuba, one slave narrative appeared in the
nineteenth century. Penned by Juan Francisco Manzano, the Autobiografia (written in 1835, ... Show

Black women and men from various African nations resided on the sugar plantations, including
Musungo Congos, Mandingos, Gangas, Lucumis and Carabalis. Montejo comments on the games
played by Africans, sugar refining in small mills, taverns that sold supplies to the slaves, and
religious practices. He rejects the myth that Africans committed suicide by hanging or drowning
themselves, but argues instead that they flew back to their homeland with a religious object (known
as a prenda) tied to their waist. Slaves loved music, particularly the use of the drum. Montejo
laments that the "white man's music had no drum at all. Tasteless" (Barnet 1994, p. 33). Montejo
depicts the Africans with whom he lived as people of great physical beauty, compassion, and
sensuality. He also presents clear evidence of the brutal treatment inflicted on these African slaves
by masters and overseers. Planters often locked their slaves in stocks for two or three months for
minor offenses, and whipping was common. "The barracoon [slave quarters] was bare dirt, empty,
and lonely" (Barnet 1994, p. 24). Slaves rose at 4:30 a.m. and then worked from 6:00 a.m. until
sunset cutting sugar cane and working in the mill.
In a chapter entitled "Life in the Woods," Montejo talked about his decision to escape. After
throwing a rock that hit the head of the overseer, he ran from the fields into nearby

Windham Internship Report
Grow Windham Internship: At Windham Heights Through my internship at Grow Windham, I had
the opportunity help children of low income families learn more about healthy living and nutrition. I
spent my internship at Windham Heights Children Center, located right off main street. Windham
Heights Children Center is part of Windham Heights affordable housing. After doing research, I
learned that as of 2015, residents of Willimantic with income below the poverty line is 32.4% (city–
data.com). I tried to find how many of that 32.4% lives in Windham Heights but I could not locate
that information. But what I did find is that there is three hundred and fifty housing units within
Windham Heights. Families with low income, as we learned in class, obtain a larger barrier to buy
adequate nutritional food, such as fresh fruits and vegetables because of the high cost that is put on
them. At my first visit at Windham Heights Learning Center, the director told me the center had just

the ability for the children to able to even try the spinach after it grows. We even found a book on a
little girl who grew her own spinach and how she did it, with pictures, so the children would have a
better understanding. Through this our goal was for the children to be able experience growing their

A Meeting At The First Congregational Church
I went to an AA meeting at the First Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut on
Monday February 22, at 7 pm. It was located in a larger room in the basement of the church. There
were around fifteen members that attended. The individual's came from an array of different ages
and ethnicities, both men and woman. There was no one race or ethnicity that dominated another in
the meeting, it was a very warm, accepting atmosphere. I noticed right away that there was more
young adults around the age of thirty than elderly members. There was also around the same number
of males and females in attendance. The meeting began with the appointed leader asking if there
were any new members in the group, and gave them a chance to introduce themselves. I also
introduced myself at this time, and explained my role as a student. They then transitioned into
reciting the serenity prayer and having a moment of silence, allowing them to give thanks to their
higher power. The leader then had different individuals recite the week's motivational phrase and
reflect on the quote. The quote talked about forgiving yourself as an alcoholic, and the concept of
letting go of the guilt that they have over hurting themselves and the people that they love when they
were under the influence. This topic was very triggering for the members, and lead them into a very
power discussion around the different people in their lives that were directly affected by their
drinking. One woman spoke about losing the

A Simple Distillation Process By Reviewing Its Use As A...
Abstract
The first objective of this laboratory exercise is to gain an understanding of the techniques used in a
"simple" distillation process by reviewing its use as a purification method. The second part of the
laboratory is calculating the purity of distillation fractions by measuring and evaluating the physical
properties of collected fraction samples. If performed correctly, two substances will be separated.
Several pieces of laboratory equipment will be used to carry out the distillation process. Calculating
the density and observing the boiling points of each fraction are the methods used to analyze the
more pure products.
Background
Distillation is a physical process, mainly used for purifying liquids and separating mixtures of
liquids into their separate individual components for the identification of organic compounds. The
purpose of doing a distillation is to derive to a more pure compound.
The method used in distillation is simple distillation, which is mainly used when the liquid is
relatively pure to begin with and can be separated from another pure substance. As the mixture is
heated, the temperature will rise until the lowest boiling point of a substance is reached, vaporized
and condensed into the flask. The temperature of the liquid will rise again until the next boiling
point of a substance is measured.
The boiling points of the more purified substances collected in a flask will be measure and
categorized into a pure compound.

Graduation Speech : Elementary School
I volunteered at W.B Sweeney Elementary School in Willimantic, Connecticut. I was with children
in grades kindergarten through fifth for two hours after school every Monday this past semester. I
thoroughly enjoyed helping them with homework, doing activities, and just getting to know them
individually. I grew as a person from this opportunity, learned more about the field I am planning on
entering, and broadened my experience with children overall. The environment of my site for
volunteering was in an art classroom where the afterschool program met after the final bell every
day. The school was a little run down with chairs and tables cracking, but that did not bother the
children one bit. When we arrived, we would sit with the children who were at tables in groups
eating their snacks. We were to talk with them and since our day was Monday, we typically
discussed how their weekends went with them. After snack, the groups moved from the art room
into separate classrooms. Week one I was assigned to a group and got to go with them each week. I
grew especially close to these children as I spent the majority of the time with them apart from the
rest. This was beneficial because each group had children from each grade so I was able to see the
differences between ages in a small setting. Each group also had a paid coordinator, and an Eastern
volunteer. In our separate rooms, groups were to complete their homework for that night. The
coordinator had a worksheet with the children's

Eastern Connecticut State University Case Study
In light of recent news of alcohol–related arrests at Eastern Connecticut State University, I am
concerned with the excessive prosecution of students at Eastern and its surrounding community.
Project Know, an organization that tracks these issues on college campuses, published back in their
2014 "Drugs on Campus" report that Eastern had the highest percentage of alcohol–related arrests of
all universities in America. [SEE ATTACHED]
Is it the case that Eastern is a disorderly campus with reprehensible students? Absolutely not.
Eastern is a beautiful University filled with promising minds. It acts as an economic hub to the
Willimantic community, providing resources, offering hundreds of volunteers, and drawing in
thousands of visitors each year.

I Am Writing About Women And Men Are Wired Differently,...
I am writing this article while sitting my in a room in my house with my wife, my two
granddaughters, my dog (female) and my daughter. As I plunk away on my laptop, I can 't help
thinking, "There 's way too much estrogen in this room!" I love and get along well with the
grandkids and the dog, and I love my daughter and wife with my whole heart...truly. But I don 't
think that beings with a certain percentage of testosterone in their systems were really meant to
understand human females. I really mean that. That statement comes all the way from my toes.
Seriously. For the life of me, I can 't fathom how to handle the fact that women have to talk
incessantly! I understand that women and men are wired differently, socially and naturally (but
equally!!), and while men have a tendency to internalize problems and work them out in their heads,
women process things by verbalizing....and verbalizing...and freaking verbalizing. So right now, if
the truth be known, my ears hurt. Because women talk as much as they do, they have become very
proficient at it. Therefore, they talk rapidly. And, even though the other females in the house,
including the dog, seem to have no problem understanding everything that is being said, I just
plainly and simply can 't hear that quickly. I swear to God, they never have a silent thought! The
need to constantly communicate, (Notice, I refrained from saying, "jibber–jabber". I 've been
married way to long to make that mistake...a second time.),

Celebrity Endorsement
Celebrity Endorsements
The importance of Celebrity Endorsements?
The most important aspect of celebrity endorsement has been finding the right synergy between
celebrity and product. It 's about selecting a spokesperson whose characteristics are congruent with
the brand image. It is insufficient simply to add a well known face to a food label and trust that there
will be enough devotees of that celebrity to generate sales. The consumer does not buy premium
priced products more than once on that basis, and so unacceptable quality cannot be masked by a
celebrity presentation. There 's one fact that advertisers need to keep in mind when using celebrity
endorsements—never let the celebrity become your brand. If so, you 'll run the risk of ... Show more

Indeed, one of the respondents claimed that when a person is famous, people forget about what the
person looks like as everyone knows the face, it is hard to judge whether the person is pretty or ugly.
Managers believed that celebrities save time in creating the credibility a company has to build into
products. They argued that when consumers see a credible celebrity endorsing a product, consumers
think that the product must be at least ‘OK '. However, it was revealed that Nanette Newman was
used by Fairy Liquid for years because she was perceived as trustworthy, believed in, and motherly.
Four out of twelve advertising agency managers mentioned PR coverage as another reason for using
celebrities. Managers perceived celebrities as topical, which created high PR coverage. Indeed,
celebrity–company marriages are covered by most media from television to newspapers (e.g. The
Spice Girls and Pepsi). This particular reason has not been mentioned in the academic literature
previously to the researcher 's knowledge. (Erdogan & Baker 1999)

William Bonin : The Freeway Killer

Final Paper
William Bonin: The Freeway Killer When you think of California, most people will often think of
the warm weather, the beautiful women, and the dreadful Los Angeles traffic on the freeways. May
people use the Los Angeles freeways to get to work, travel around the different cities in Los
Angeles, and to make the trips to where ever your destination is quicker than taking the side streets.
But an old famous serial killer that goes by the name of William Bonin that had an aversion to
young men. It's not very common you go on any freeway here in Los Angeles and found bodies of
young men dead along the side. A troubled individual by the name of William Bonin was able to
leave his place in history by torturing these young men and placing the bloodied bodies along the
freeway in order to clean up the space in his car. Mr. Bonin is a homosexual serial killer. According
to Vernon J. Geberth, "Homosexual serial murders involve sadomasochistic torture, lust murders,
thrill killings, and child killings as well as robbery homicides which are homosexually–oriented."
(Geberth, 1995) Mr. Bonin not only got was charged at the end of his spree with robbery, but also
found much pleasure in strangling the boys. William Bonin was also so well known in the world as
he was in constant tabloids and was even known to have his case broadcast through many of
national and well respected news papers, such as the Los Angeles Times and New York Times. The

The Minimum Wage It is not Enough to Cover Basic Needs Essay
The government sets minimum wage at what they think an average person needs to live a healthy
life, but is minimum wage isn't really enough to support a person. Minimum wage does not change
with inflation, and prices have gone up since the last time minimum wage was changed on July 5,
2009. People get paid minimum wage, which is what the government says should be enough to
cover the costs of living for a person, but for those living on minimum wage, hunger and
malnutrition are a big problem, even with government and public assistance like SNAP (The
Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) and housing assistance programs.

As inflation causes the economy to change, minimum wage has decreased in value as inflation has
caused the economy to change. A minimum wage that might have been enough to support a person a
couple of years ago would not be enough to support a person now. For instance, in 1980, minimum
wage was about $16,647 dollars a year, but an apartment in Manhattan, New York was only about
$10,400 per year in rent, leaving about $120 dollars a month for other expenses. Now, minimum
wage is about $13,195 per year, with an apartment in Manhattan being around $7,200 per year in
rent, not counting utilities, leaving about $5,995 for other expenses. Keep in mind that food,
gasoline, utilities, and other essentials were much cheaper in the 1980's than they are now. An
average household spends about $294 per month (Loweryourspending.com), or about $3,528 a year,
on groceries, leaving about $2,467 for the rest of a person's expenses.
SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, has been in existence since May 16, 1939. The original food
stamp program allowed consumers to purchase food stamps, essentially giving them $1.50 for every
dollar they spent on food. It was meant to get farm surpluses to urban areas where people were
undernourished (USDA). SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, is designed to
reduce food insecurity, which can be described as reduced food intake, disrupted eating patterns due
to lack of money or

An Essay on Cause and Effect
Cause and Effect essay: A change in the way you deal with other people
Introduction The human civilization, from the beginning of the times, has been dictated by constant
cultural and social changes. These cultural and social changes did not only have a significant on the
lifestyles of human beings around the world, but it also effected on how people deal with one and
other. It must be noted that human civilization across the globe has remained in the constant process
of evolution and no matter what, this process of evolution could not be resisted and people have to
surrender to change. The process of evolution became even more rapid in the post information
technol.ogy era. This is because human life style not only became faster paced, but also easy and
massive accessibility towards media and telecommunications resulted in greater exposure and
awareness of human mind from a very young age. As a result the generation that belongs to the post
modern era is found to be much more mentally smarter than its older counterparts (Shelden, Tracy &
Brown, 2004). Due to these changes, significant changes were implicated on child development,
teaching styles and general up bringing andof children along with family lifestyles and traditional
ties all around the world.

Gender Identity And Gender Roles
Gender is defined as whatever behaviors and attitudes a group considers proper for its males and
females. Unlike sex, gender is something that we learn from the day we are born. "Young children
begin to acquire gender role stereotypes at about the same time they develop gender identity and by
the age of 3 or 4 most children" (Amanda Youmans). Peers, community, media, religion and our
upbringing all play a role in the understanding of our culture and what is considered acceptable for
males and females. When the sex of a child is revealed, they are automatically placed into a gender
specific role with certain expectations. There are things in this world such as colors, toys, media
depiction and taught behaviors that play into these gender roles.
Walk into any home with toddlers, and you will no doubt be able to tell whether the child is a boy or
a girl by a quick peek into the playroom. Trucks, trains, planes, and baseballs will scream boy; while
a room full of pink and frilly dolls and stuffed animals have little girl written all over it. Judith
Elaine Blakemore, professor of psychology and associate dean of Arts and Sciences for Faculty
Development at Indiana University and Jeffrey Trawick–Smith, professor at Eastern Connecticut
State University in Willimantic, Connecticut, did a research study about the impact of specific toys
on play. They found that,

Critical Thinking Reasoning Is Relevant And Reliable Essay
1. Critical thinking means to think correctly in to find knowledge that is relevant and reliable. The
critical thinking process consists of reasoning which is the process in which we think. This way of
thinking has several different aspects. Reasoning is done from a certain point of view and based on
data, information and evidence. Reasoning is expressed through and shapes by concepts and ideas.
Reasoning also uses inferences and interpretations to draw conclusions and give meaning to data.
When it comes to critical thinking reasoning is not the only part of critical thinking. When thinking
critically it is important to have clarity which has to do with elaborations, thinking using different
points and examples. Accuracy is also important. It is crucial that the information being presented is
true. When thinking critically there must be an aspect of precision and relevance. Precision requires
that we are specific and have plentiful details. Relevance is ensuring the information is connected to
the question at hand. Another crucial aspect is depth. It is important to address the complexities of
the question presented. Breadth is another important part because it considers looking at the
question a different way with different points of view. Lastly, but also very important there must be
logic behind critical thinking. Using logic is what ensures that your thinking makes sense and can be

While talking about nutrition, one of the interesting facts that stood out to me was that the
Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for Carbohydrates is 45%–65%. Previously, I have
been told by many people that the best way to avoid weight gain and eat healthy is to avoid
carbohydrates. However, carbohydrates are a necessary part of any person's diet, the key is

Social Class And The Hidden Curriculum Of Work By Jean Anyon
Despite students possessing a variety of needs and learning styles, the education system was
designed for a "one–size–fits–all" in an attempt to meet every child's needs and abilities. However,
this is not the common perception by those who investigate further into the diverse environments of
numerous, differing schools. Jean Anyon, in "Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of
Work,"argues that the style of education students receive is decided by the social class of their
community and is not uniform when concerning students of all types. Instead, working class, middle
class, affluent professionals, and executive elites experience significantly dissimilar school
environments. Not only are they treated differently, and taught differently, but they're prepared for a
certain future that corresponds with their social class. Anyon's synthesis is validated by my own
experience at the Windham schools in Willimantic, where the demographics of the school
corresponded with the confining, restrictive, and strict teaching style described by Anyon as
'working class'. My account depicts the harsh reality of how my disadvantaged community suffers
through a school system that does not prepare them for a future beyond a life of blue–collar jobs.
However, my experience also disproves Anyon's model through several details in the style of
learning, such as going out of a textbook, or also being graded on a right answer.
In Anyon's article, she writes about an experiment conducted on

The Influences of Sor Juana and Julia de Burgos
The Influences of Sor Juana and Julia de Burgos
Most every human being has encountered a time in their life when he or she has felt suppressed.
However, not every person has stood up against the people and forces that have kept them
oppressed. It takes a truly extraordinary person to stand up for their self and to take a stand for the
greater good of others. According to Clare Booth Luce: "courage is the ladder on which all the other
virtues mount." The Mexican writer, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and the Puerto Rican writer, Julia de
Burgos, acknowledged the fact that they were suppressed by the male gender. Sor Juana and Julia de
Burgos did not simply stop at acknowledging the problem at hand. Rather, these two ... Show more

In 1669, Juana entered the convent of Santa Paula where she officially became a nun. The convent
provided Sor (sister) Juana with the opportunity to read further and to reflect on her personal life
and on society through writing. Besides thorough studying and writing, Sor Juana taught and
directed theatrical performances at the Santa Paula's school for girls (Trueblood 6). As Sor Juana
became better known for her writing she corresponded to intellectuals in Spain and in the Spanish
colonies of America. By 1689 Sor Juana wrote the plays: "The Trials of a Household" and "The
Greater Labyrinth is Love" ("Sor Juana's Chronology" 2). Even after Sor Juana died on April 17 of
1695, her writings continued to be published. Very well–known, the first edition of Volume III of
Sor Juana's works was published in 1700 ("Sor Juana's Chronology" 2).
Julia de Burgos faced somewhat more difficult circumstances than did Sor Juana to reach her status
as an acclaimed female writer. Referring to Julia de Burgos, Carmen Delgado commented: "a
woman of great sensibility, rebellious spirit, and exceptional intelligence, Julia de Burgos no doubt
felt imprisoned by circumstances" ("Julia de Burgos" 1). Burgos, the first of thirteen children of
Francisco Burgos Hans and Paula Garcia de Burgos, was born in 1914 in the town of Carolina,
Puerto Rico ("Julia de Burgos" 1). Unlike Sor Juana, Julia de Burgos' family did not have the means

A Critical Analysis Of A Critique Of Thread City

  • 1. A Critical Analysis Of A Critique Of Thread City Critique of "Thread City" When I went to see Thread City on Sunday for the matinee performance on Sunday, I was immediately surprised with how many people were there. At my old school, I was used to high attendance at school performances but never the need to reserve seats or wait in line to get into the theatre. While I realize that I am both new to this school and not a part of the theatre department, I was really surprised with the ability of the cast and crew to pull off such an effects– heavy performance; one that truly wouldn't have been possible without significant funding and faith in Eastern's theatre department. With the opening scene of the show, it was the director's choice to cast many voices all throughout the theatre–all speaking either English or Spanish, which left me confused with what was happening. Shortly thereafter it was made clear by voice–over narration that the play was about the history of Willimantic; specifically, the immigrants who came into Willimantic to work in thread factories and provide better lives for their families. As the majority of the cast comes on stage, none of them were speaking. In fact, the only way to tell what was happening was to watch their specific movements, and their dancing, and to see how the characters were interacting with each other. It became clear that the director had decided to make it mostly a nonverbal show, relying on movements and special effects to tell the story. All of the movements the cast made were very methodical and flowed with the scene and the character either moving with or beside them. Truly, the creation of a non–verbal play caused me, and I believe the audience, to pay closer attention to sound and movement in order to piece together the story for ourselves. Along with the choice to not make the actors/actresses speak, the show also relied quite heavily on special effects; using screens, props, lights, and sound to create each new scene. For instance, the photographer/artist was often brought out between scenes of travel in order to sketch what appeared on the screen. When the cast was on the boat heading to the US, the scene was filled with animated seagulls and the theatre was filled with sounds of the ocean and seagulls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Biography of a Runaway Slave Miguel Barnet's Biography of a Runaway Slave: Testimonial Literature as History Few documentary sources exist from the Caribbean islands and the Latin American mainland written by Africans or their descendants that describe their life under enslavement. In Brazil, two mulatto abolitionists wrote sketchy descriptions of their personal experiences, and one autobiography of a black man was published before emancipation. In contrast, several thousand slave narratives and eight full–length autobiographies were published in the United States before the outbreak of the Civil War (1860–1865) (Conrad, p. xix). In Cuba, one slave narrative appeared in the nineteenth century. Penned by Juan Francisco Manzano, the Autobiografia (written in 1835, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Black women and men from various African nations resided on the sugar plantations, including Musungo Congos, Mandingos, Gangas, Lucumis and Carabalis. Montejo comments on the games played by Africans, sugar refining in small mills, taverns that sold supplies to the slaves, and religious practices. He rejects the myth that Africans committed suicide by hanging or drowning themselves, but argues instead that they flew back to their homeland with a religious object (known as a prenda) tied to their waist. Slaves loved music, particularly the use of the drum. Montejo laments that the "white man's music had no drum at all. Tasteless" (Barnet 1994, p. 33). Montejo depicts the Africans with whom he lived as people of great physical beauty, compassion, and sensuality. He also presents clear evidence of the brutal treatment inflicted on these African slaves by masters and overseers. Planters often locked their slaves in stocks for two or three months for minor offenses, and whipping was common. "The barracoon [slave quarters] was bare dirt, empty, and lonely" (Barnet 1994, p. 24). Slaves rose at 4:30 a.m. and then worked from 6:00 a.m. until sunset cutting sugar cane and working in the mill. In a chapter entitled "Life in the Woods," Montejo talked about his decision to escape. After throwing a rock that hit the head of the overseer, he ran from the fields into nearby ... Windham Internship Report Grow Windham Internship: At Windham Heights Through my internship at Grow Windham, I had the opportunity help children of low income families learn more about healthy living and nutrition. I spent my internship at Windham Heights Children Center, located right off main street. Windham Heights Children Center is part of Windham Heights affordable housing. After doing research, I learned that as of 2015, residents of Willimantic with income below the poverty line is 32.4% (city– data.com). I tried to find how many of that 32.4% lives in Windham Heights but I could not locate that information. But what I did find is that there is three hundred and fifty housing units within Windham Heights. Families with low income, as we learned in class, obtain a larger barrier to buy adequate nutritional food, such as fresh fruits and vegetables because of the high cost that is put on them. We even found a book on a little girl who grew her own spinach and how she did it, with pictures, so the children would have a better understanding. Through this our goal was for the children to be able experience growing their own food and having the chance to try a vegetable they may have never had before, allowing them to expand their palates. • 9. A Meeting At The First Congregational Church I went to an AA meeting at the First Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut on Monday February 22, at 7 pm. It was located in a larger room in the basement of the church. There were around fifteen members that attended. The individual's came from an array of different ages and ethnicities, both men and woman. There was no one race or ethnicity that dominated another in the meeting, it was a very warm, accepting atmosphere. I noticed right away that there was more young adults around the age of thirty than elderly members. There was also around the same number of males and females in attendance. The meeting began with the appointed leader asking if there were any new members in the group, and gave them a chance to introduce themselves. I also introduced myself at this time, and explained my role as a student. They then transitioned into reciting the serenity prayer and having a moment of silence, allowing them to give thanks to their higher power. The leader then had different individuals recite the week's motivational phrase and reflect on the quote. The quote talked about forgiving yourself as an alcoholic, and the concept of letting go of the guilt that they have over hurting themselves and the people that they love when they were under the influence. This topic was very triggering for the members, and lead them into a very power discussion around the different people in their lives that were directly affected by their drinking. • 11. A Simple Distillation Process By Reviewing Its Use As A... Abstract The first objective of this laboratory exercise is to gain an understanding of the techniques used in a "simple" distillation process by reviewing its use as a purification method. The second part of the laboratory is calculating the purity of distillation fractions by measuring and evaluating the physical properties of collected fraction samples. If performed correctly, two substances will be separated. Several pieces of laboratory equipment will be used to carry out the distillation process. Calculating the density and observing the boiling points of each fraction are the methods used to analyze the more pure products. Background Distillation is a physical process, mainly used for purifying liquids and separating mixtures of liquids into their separate individual components for the identification of organic compounds. The purpose of doing a distillation is to derive to a more pure compound. The method used in distillation is simple distillation, which is mainly used when the liquid is relatively pure to begin with and can be separated from another pure substance. As the mixture is heated, the temperature will rise until the lowest boiling point of a substance is reached, vaporized and condensed into the flask. The temperature of the liquid will rise again until the next boiling point of a substance is measured. The boiling points of the more purified substances collected in a flask will be measure and categorized into a pure compound. Procedure The following ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Graduation Speech : Elementary School I volunteered at W.B Sweeney Elementary School in Willimantic, Connecticut. I was with children in grades kindergarten through fifth for two hours after school every Monday this past semester. I thoroughly enjoyed helping them with homework, doing activities, and just getting to know them individually. I grew as a person from this opportunity, learned more about the field I am planning on entering, and broadened my experience with children overall. The environment of my site for volunteering was in an art classroom where the afterschool program met after the final bell every day. The school was a little run down with chairs and tables cracking, but that did not bother the children one bit. When we arrived, we would sit with the children who were at tables in groups eating their snacks. We were to talk with them and since our day was Monday, we typically discussed how their weekends went with them. After snack, the groups moved from the art room into separate classrooms. Week one I was assigned to a group and got to go with them each week. I grew especially close to these children as I spent the majority of the time with them apart from the rest. This was beneficial because each group had children from each grade so I was able to see the differences between ages in a small setting. Each group also had a paid coordinator, and an Eastern volunteer. In our separate rooms, groups were to complete their homework for that night. The coordinator had a worksheet with the children's ... • 17. Health Reflection Essay When I entered this course, I did not expect to benefit from it as much as I did. However, this course quickly became one of the most interesting classes I am taking because all of the topics that we discussed were relatable. My health has improved throughout this course, as I have become more self–aware of helpful and harmful choices that I make with my body. Recently, the subject of physical activity for fitness and health was introduced and explained in class. I have never enjoyed going to the gym, and therefore found it difficult to exercise. During this unit, I learned that in several cultures exercise is done in the form of daily activities, such as gardening. This opened my eyes to the idea that I can still engage in physical activity without going to a fitness center. Since this unit, I have made sure that I always take the stairs on my way to class, even if my peers prefer that we take the elevator, and I frequently go on walks around campus. I am also trying to increase the amount of aerobic exercise that I do on a regular basis. In my residence hall, there are nine floors, therefore I have made a goal to run up and down all of the flights of stairs at least 4 times a day consecutively. This raises my heart rate and is working my leg muscles, however, the greatest benefit, in my opinion, is the feeling of accomplishment I have when I achieve or surpass my goal. There are numerous ways to incorporate physical fitness into my daily routine that I had not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. I Am Writing About Women And Men Are Wired Differently,... I am writing this article while sitting my in a room in my house with my wife, my two granddaughters, my dog (female) and my daughter. As I plunk away on my laptop, I can 't help thinking, "There 's way too much estrogen in this room!" I love and get along well with the grandkids and the dog, and I love my daughter and wife with my whole heart...truly. But I don 't think that beings with a certain percentage of testosterone in their systems were really meant to understand human females. I really mean that. That statement comes all the way from my toes. Seriously. For the life of me, I can 't fathom how to handle the fact that women have to talk incessantly! I understand that women and men are wired differently, socially and naturally (but equally!!), and while men have a tendency to internalize problems and work them out in their heads, women process things by verbalizing....and verbalizing...and freaking verbalizing. So right now, if the truth be known, my ears hurt. Because women talk as much as they do, they have become very proficient at it. Therefore, they talk rapidly. And, even though the other females in the house, including the dog, seem to have no problem understanding everything that is being said, I just plainly and simply can 't hear that quickly. I swear to God, they never have a silent thought! The need to constantly communicate, (Notice, I refrained from saying, "jibber–jabber". I 've been married way to long to make that mistake...a second time.), ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Celebrity Endorsement Celebrity Endorsements The importance of Celebrity Endorsements? The most important aspect of celebrity endorsement has been finding the right synergy between celebrity and product. It 's about selecting a spokesperson whose characteristics are congruent with the brand image. It is insufficient simply to add a well known face to a food label and trust that there will be enough devotees of that celebrity to generate sales. The consumer does not buy premium priced products more than once on that basis, and so unacceptable quality cannot be masked by a celebrity presentation. Minimum wage does not change with inflation, and prices have gone up since the last time minimum wage was changed on July 5, 2009. People get paid minimum wage, which is what the government says should be enough to cover the costs of living for a person, but for those living on minimum wage, hunger and malnutrition are a big problem, even with government and public assistance like SNAP (The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) and housing assistance programs. As inflation causes the economy to change, minimum wage has decreased in value as inflation has caused the economy to change. A minimum wage that might have been enough to support a person a couple of years ago would not be enough to support a person now. For instance, in 1980, minimum wage was about $16,647 dollars a year, but an apartment in Manhattan, New York was only about $10,400 per year in rent, leaving about $120 dollars a month for other expenses. Now, minimum wage is about $13,195 per year, with an apartment in Manhattan being around $7,200 per year in rent, not counting utilities, leaving about $5,995 for other expenses. Keep in mind that food, gasoline, utilities, and other essentials were much cheaper in the 1980's than they are now. An average household spends about $294 per month (Loweryourspending.com), or about $3,528 a year, on groceries, leaving about $2,467 for the rest of a person's expenses. SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, has been in existence since May 16, 1939. The original food stamp program allowed consumers to purchase food stamps, essentially giving them $1.50 for every dollar they spent on food. It was meant to get farm surpluses to urban areas where people were undernourished (USDA). These cultural and social changes did not only have a significant on the lifestyles of human beings around the world, but it also effected on how people deal with one and other. It must be noted that human civilization across the globe has remained in the constant process of evolution and no matter what, this process of evolution could not be resisted and people have to surrender to change. The process of evolution became even more rapid in the post information technol.ogy era. • 33. Gender Identity And Gender Roles Gender is defined as whatever behaviors and attitudes a group considers proper for its males and females. Unlike sex, gender is something that we learn from the day we are born. "Young children begin to acquire gender role stereotypes at about the same time they develop gender identity and by the age of 3 or 4 most children" (Amanda Youmans). Peers, community, media, religion and our upbringing all play a role in the understanding of our culture and what is considered acceptable for males and females. When the sex of a child is revealed, they are automatically placed into a gender specific role with certain expectations. There are things in this world such as colors, toys, media depiction and taught behaviors that play into these gender roles. Walk into any home with toddlers, and you will no doubt be able to tell whether the child is a boy or a girl by a quick peek into the playroom. Trucks, trains, planes, and baseballs will scream boy; while a room full of pink and frilly dolls and stuffed animals have little girl written all over it. Judith Elaine Blakemore, professor of psychology and associate dean of Arts and Sciences for Faculty Development at Indiana University and Jeffrey Trawick–Smith, professor at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut, did a research study about the impact of specific toys on play. Later, as he tried to put the pieces of his broken life back together, he would come to regard the phone call he placed to Sully as the closest thing to a miracle he'd ever experienced. James stood in the streets of downtown Hartford. A light, freezing rain soaked the wool coat. He didn't have a hat, and his hair was covered in an increasing thick layer of ice. He stepped into the package store a few times to warm up. The clerk would have let him stay, but he caught James trying to slip a pint of blackberry brandy into his coat pocket. After that, the clerk told James to get lost or he'd call the cops. James apologized and placed the bottle back on the shelf. • 39. Health Reflection Essay During my time in the course, I have learned more information regarding several topics that I previously knew little about. When I entered this course, I did not expect to benefit from it as much as I did. However, this course quickly became one of the most interesting courses I am taking because all the topics that we discussed were relatable in some way. This opened my eyes to the idea that I can still engage in physical activity without having to go to the gym. Since this unit, I have made sure that I always take the stairs on my way to class, even if my peers request that we take the elevator, and I frequently go on walks around campus. I am also trying to increase the amount of aerobic exercise that I do on a regular basis. In my residence hall, there are nine floors, therefore I have made a goal to run up and down all of the flights of stairs at least 4 times a day consecutively. This raises my heart rate and is working my leg muscles, however, the greatest benefit in my opinion is the feeling of accomplishment I get when I achieve or surpass my goal. There are so many ways to incorporate physical fitness into my daily routine that I had not considered before taking this class because I was under the assumption that in order to exercise properly, I needed to be using the machines available at a gym. Improvements in my physical health also came through class discussion of nutrition. While talking about nutrition, one of the interesting facts that stood out to me was that the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for Carbohydrates is 45%–65%. Previously, I have been told by many people that the best way to avoid weight gain and eat healthy is to avoid carbohydrates. However, carbohydrates are a necessary part of any person's diet, the key is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Social Class And The Hidden Curriculum Of Work By Jean Anyon Despite students possessing a variety of needs and learning styles, the education system was designed for a "one–size–fits–all" in an attempt to meet every child's needs and abilities. However, this is not the common perception by those who investigate further into the diverse environments of numerous, differing schools. Jean Anyon, in "Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work,"argues that the style of education students receive is decided by the social class of their community and is not uniform when concerning students of all types. Instead, working class, middle class, affluent professionals, and executive elites experience significantly dissimilar school environments. Not only are they treated differently, and taught differently, but they're prepared for a certain future that corresponds with their social class. Anyon's synthesis is validated by my own experience at the Windham schools in Willimantic, where the demographics of the school corresponded with the confining, restrictive, and strict teaching style described by Anyon as 'working class'. My account depicts the harsh reality of how my disadvantaged community suffers through a school system that does not prepare them for a future beyond a life of blue–collar jobs. However, my experience also disproves Anyon's model through several details in the style of learning, such as going out of a textbook, or also being graded on a right answer. In Anyon's article, she writes about an experiment conducted on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, not every person has stood up against the people and forces that have kept them oppressed. It takes a truly extraordinary person to stand up for their self and to take a stand for the greater good of others. According to Clare Booth Luce: "courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount." In 1669, Juana entered the convent of Santa Paula where she officially became a nun. The convent provided Sor (sister) Juana with the opportunity to read further and to reflect on her personal life and on society through writing. As Sor Juana became better known for her writing she corresponded to intellectuals in Spain and in the Spanish colonies of America. By 1689 Sor Juana wrote the plays: "The Trials of a Household" and "The Greater Labyrinth is Love" ("Sor Juana's Chronology" 2). Even after Sor Juana died on April 17 of 1695, her writings continued to be published. Very well–known, the first edition of Volume III of Sor Juana's works was published in 1700 ("Sor Juana's Chronology" 2). Julia de Burgos faced somewhat more difficult circumstances than did Sor Juana to reach her status as an acclaimed female writer. Referring to Julia de Burgos, Carmen Delgado commented: "a woman of great sensibility, rebellious spirit, and exceptional intelligence, Julia de Burgos no doubt felt imprisoned by circumstances" ("Julia de Burgos" 1).
