Microsoft Surface is a Multi-touch product from Microsoft which is developed as software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects
3. overview
• Microsoft Surface is a
computer embedded in a
medium-sized table, with
a large, flat display on top.
• Microsoft Surface is a
Multi-touch product from
Microsoft .
• Surface is a horizontal
display on a table-like form
factor .
4. The cool factor is the way you interact with digital
content by using your hands , So no more keyboard no
mouse its all hands on
• Allow multiple users,
to manipulate digital
content by the use of
natural motions, hand
gestures, or physical
objects.
5. HISTORY
• The technology behind
Surface is called Multi-touch.
It has at least a 25-year
history .
•Work was constantly done
at:-
•University of Toronto
[ on Multi touch table ]
• Bell labs
[ on Multi touch screen ]
6. history……………
• Idea for Surface was initially conceptualized in
2001 by Steven Bathiche of Microsoft
Hardware and Andy Wilson of Microsoft
Research.
• In October 2001, a team was formed with
Bathiche and Wilson as key members, to bring
the idea to the next stage of development.
7. • In 2003, the team
presented the idea to the
Microsoft Chairman Bill
Gates
• Over the next year,
Microsoft built more than
85 early prototypes for
Surface
•The final hardware design
was completed in 2005.
8. DESCRIPTION
• Surface is a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like form factor,
22 inches (56 cm) high and 42 inches (107 cm) wide.
• Surface applications are written using Microsoft technology.
•The Surface tabletop is
acrylic, and its interior
frame is powder-coated
steel.
9. • Surface does not use heat or pressure sensors
to indicate when someone has touched the
screen. Instead, five separate cameras are
used to record motion on the table's surface.
10. • The screen resolution is 1024x768.
• The touch detection system had an effective resolution of
1280x960.
• Unlike the screen resolution, which for the time being is
constant, the touch resolution varies according to the size of
the screen used—it is designed to work at a resolution of 48
dots per inch.
11. ExplorE thE digital
world
• Screen is water
resistant
• Slam on the screen
and it will make a
loud thump
• Prices will reportedly be $5,000 to $10,000 per unit.
12. • Five cameras were needed
because of field angle issues.
• These cameras can read a nearly
infinite number of simultaneous
touches .
•Surface has been optimized for 52
touches
• A projection system sit beneath the
hard tabletop screen .
• For communications , Surface
features a standard Ethernet
connection, WiFi , and Bluetooth
13. How infrared works…….
• Infrared - infrared screens project
horizontal and vertical beams of
infrared light over the surface of the
screen. When a finger or other object
breaks those beams, the X/Y
coordinates are calculated.
• These screens can also be used by
users with gloves and are relatively
impervious to damage.
14. CONFIGURATION
• Operating System -
Windows Vista
• Ethernet
• Five cameras
• 4 GB of DDR2 RAM
• Two ATX motherboards
• Core 2 Duo processor
chip
• Projection system with
screen
• 1TB 7200rpm Hard
Drive
•Operating System - Windows Vista
15. Configuration……
• Bluetooth
• Wireless 802.11 b/g
• Built-in wireless and
Bluetooth
• Powerful graphics card from
either AMD/ATI or NVIDIA.
• A Bluetooth keyboard with a
built-in track pad is available
to diagnose problems with
the unit, although for regular
use it is not required.
17. APPLICATIONS
• Mobile phone users can
easily buy ring tones or
change payment plans by
placing their handsets on in-
store displays .
• Surface have ability to recognize physical objects that have
identification tags similar to bar codes.
• Mobile on the tabletop , it will recognize the device and pop
up the handset's specifications and information to the screen.
18. • Digital Camera can sent its
pictures to the display and can
be transferred to cell phones
• Imagine ordering a beverage
during a meal with just the tap
of a finger.
• Quickly browsing music and
dragging favorite songs onto a
personal play list
• Creating and sending a
personal postcard
19. • Allows guests to create an
exciting new way to chat and
meet people from one Surface
to another..
• Order food or drinks, paying
for them by dropping their
credit card on the screen.
• Can be used for map of
streets
• Surface is also specializes in
computerized gaming machines
20. CURRENT USES
• Harrah's Entertainment's
Las Vegas
• Starwood Hotels & Resorts
Worldwide .
• T-Mobile USA
• AT & T Stores
21. CONCLUSION
• Surface computing is going to bring revolution
in everyday lives .
• "Once you open it up to applications, what
you can think of is limitless."
• It’s about technology adapting to the user,
rather than the user adapting to the
technology.
