3. PROPERTIES OF HUMAN LANGUAGE
1- Displacement: The ability to refer to time and space. To
talk about, past, present or future. Also the abstract thinking (we
can imagine a kind of world, creating fantasies).
2- Arbitrariness: The ability to relate object with sign.
Generally there is no natural connection between linguistic form
and meaning, because meanings are imposed for the society.
3- Productivity: The ability to create new sentences,
humans can manipulate our language resources on the needs.
Communication is flexible, unlike the animals.
4- Cultural transmission: Language is acquired are in a
culture, and it is passed from one generation to another.
5- Duality: The language is organized in two levels. Ability to
combinations of individual sounds to form words.
