This symbol Means you will be doing this sort of activity

Some thinking – it‟s good for you!

A choice from a range of things

Stuff to do at home or in your frees

                         Giving a presentation

Assessment and review – Marked by a peer or me!

                         Finding stuff out

This seemed like a good idea at the time...

This booklet covers the following areas of the specification:

Demographic change and the family

The decline in the death rate and infant mortality rate
       The aging population
The decline in the birth rate, fertility rate and average family size
       The rising divorce rate
The decline in marriage and the increased acceptance of co-
       habitation
The increase of births outside marriage

There are two main sources of information to help you to complete the
activities:

       Your AQA text book
       Ken Browne AS text

Some of the activities you will complete in class so you need to ensure
that you have this booklet with you each lesson. This should take
approximately three weeks to complete and there is an assessment
section to check your understanding and to practise examination
technique.

The symbols will show you the type of activity which needs to be
completed.

This is a limited word activity.

Define these terms – they are essential for your study of this area so we
might as well know what they mean!

Term/Concept Definition
Demography

Birth rate

Fertility rate

Infant mortality rate

Death rate

Life expectancy

Secularization

Divorce rate

Why are we surviving childhood and living longer?

Demography is the study of characteristics of human populations and how
they have changed over time. Use the internet to try to track a trend in
the death rate, infant mortality rate and life expectancy.

Year Death rate Infant mortality Life expectancy

               Make some predictions.

Make a list of all the reasons you think have contributed to the changes
and then share these with a partner.

Which reason do you think is the most important or are the changes a
combination of several factors which are interdependent?

SCLY 1 Families and Households

Why are we living longer and surviving childhood?

Using Ken Browne (pages 130 -131) create a diagram to demonstrate the
factors which have lead to demographic change. You may wish to
supplement this with other texts.

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

                What is the cost?

As you have discovered, improvements in heath care, education, working
condition and medicine has all contributed to change. But…is there a cost?

What are the consequences of an aging population? You may wish to
consider different angles – social, economic, impact on the family etc.

SCLY 1 Families and Households

Has there been a decline in the birth rate, fertility rate and
average family size? Use the internet to try to track the trends over time.

What factors may have contributed to these changes?

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

                  Explaining the changes…choose an activity.

Be creative and show the changes in collage form
Create a teaching or revision resource
Create a mind map or chart
Or…surprise me with your own idea!!!

Could other factors come into play? How might migration
have made an impact on the population?

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

The Divorce Rate…Mrs Green’s Pet Topic!

Yes…it is time for one of those wrist aching sessions. You might find these charts
and diagrams useful when taking notes.

                                   Divorce Statistics

Changes in the law Changes in society

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

For this activity you need to work in a group of 5. If you work in a
smaller group…the result will be MORE WORK!!!

Choose on one of these BIG QUESTIONS and prepare a resource for
your group to create an essential “all you need to know” summary. Once all five
are put together you should have a good revision resource. It is like buy one,
get four free!

BUT…PLAY FAIR – Think about the quality of work that you want to
receive and make sure that yours is equally fabulous!

The questions.

   1. Why has there been a decline in marriage and an increased acceptance of
      cohabitation?
   2. Why has there been a growth in the number of one parent families?
   3. Why are there more births outside of marriage?
   4. Why are more people choosing to live alone?
   5. What are the trends in remarriage and how has this had an impact on
      family structures?

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

                 Assessment time!

All of these questions have been taken from past examination papers. The marks
should give you an indication of the level of detail required and if the question
needs to be answered in an essay style.

SCLY 1 Families and Households
AS Sociology HGr Humanities Department

As you can see from the amount of examination questions available,
demography is an important area of the specification!
