Classism is differential treatment based on the social class that an individual is in. It’s the
systematic assignment of characteristics of worth and ability based on social class. It includes
individual’s attitudes and behaviors, systems and policies that are set up to benefit the upper
class at the expense of the lower class. This results in a drastic income and wealth inequality and
unfairness. Classism ranks people on their income and, economic status, family lineage,
education and other divisions.
Why it is important for human services workers to study and understand diversity and differences?
Answer:
I would imagine it would be hard to work with the individual with the sex change because you have to
make sure you use the right name for certain situations. It is important to understand different cultures
and to respect their differences and beliefs. If not you may offend a client and they may take it personal.
When a client sees that you took the time to understand them and their culture they feel important.
Have you used language in a hurtful way without meaning to in the workplace? How do you propose to
become more self-aware of the language you use?

Bill was a Navajo native who was discriminated against and taken to jail because of how he
looked. They first mistake him as being Mexican and brought him a Mexican interpreter at the
jail. However Bill did not answer the questions and appeared anguished and kept repeating “me
sick”. He did not speak Spanish and did not understand; instead they diagnosed him as being
scritofrantic and was sent to the state hospital.
Please discuss what you learned from reading the Cultural Aspects of Mental health Service Delivery
(Chapter 5 pages 96 to 106). Please remember to use citations from the text to support your post.
Answer:
I found this text from Chapter 5 very interesting. It suggested that researches will compare and study
differnces that favor a particular group. For example, the study may support the white population more
then the black population. This makes the black population look less superior. These differnces and
chararestics can make a group look weak. Differnet cultures view differnt behaviors differntly.
When you read the racial identity development model, what stage do you think would be the most difficult
to progress through? Explain your response and remember to use citations from the text to support your
post.
Answer:
When a person grows up in a community with people of a certain race, they think of themselves as being
just like them. If a white child grows up in a poor black neighborhood they do not feel them self as being
any differnt then the other children except by color. However if they move into a upper class neighbor
hood then they may start to feel superior and differnt about others. I grew up in a school of mixed cultures
and i got along with everyone and never felt differnt then any other student. As i got to high school i seen
more cultures sticking toghether instead of branching out. Like the text stated when an individual
experiances an event or encouters something, it sends them into a deep confusion about his/her ethnicity
(Diller, 2011).
Discuss a diversity skill in which you feel you are competent and one that you feel is more difficult for you.
Why are you competent? Why do you struggle? Please use the text to support your post.

3. Use the Sage Journals database to find an article on diversity and immigrants. Please give the
citation for the article.
Answer:
You will find information on ProQuest Social Sciences in the UoP Counseling Guide. Use ProQuest
Social Sciences to find a chart or graph related to diversity in your state. If you cannot find a chart or

etc.). Share your finding with the class.

There are many challenges that people face in our country and around the world whether it be
some kind of trauma, challenges for migrant and seasonal workers, overcoming poverty,
challenges for women, and challenges for aging. There are different incomes and outcomes for
each. Generational poverty is poverty passed down from generation to generation. Parents pass it
down to their kids, and they received it from their parents. It’s a cycle that’s never-ending. To
overcome generational poverty the government’s solution is to work. Work provides money for
bills and the family expenses. More citizens are expected to work their way out of poverty.
Single mothers have a harder time providing with for their family through the stress of surviving.
Historical Trauma
“Trauma is an extraordinary psychological experience that overwhelms ordinary human
functioning” (Diller, 2011.) Individuals experience trauma and deal with it in many ways. There
are three groups of individuals, the victim, the bystander, and the perpetrator. Many victims do
not want to speak of what happened to them doing this will make them relive the traumatic
experience. However telling ones story can be very therapeutic. Research on PTSD, shows that
telling about the trauma is the first step to healing. An individual that is traumatized may
disconnect from the community, friends, and family. Bystanders may also be affected by
traumatic events. They may feel sympathy for the victim, and ask why didn’t they help? The
perpetrator of a crime may feel remorse to the family of the victim.

This article is a great article that relates to African Americans seeking mental health
treatment at lower rates than whites. The article states that this disparity can be attributed
to attitudes toward services, alternate coping, and differences in care. This article also
illuminates biases in counseling.

loverboy is a guy who pretends to be a boyfriend, but later develops into a violent pimp. Angelique’s
mother Anita never gave up hope that her daughter would come hope and be safe. Her daughter was
15 when she met a man who was claimed to be her boyfriend. She then started changing from a tom
boy to a girly girl with sexy clothes and high heels. Angelique started wearing heavy makeup and
being disrespectful to her mother. She started stealing money and missing school. Angelique
eventually became a prostitute. Angelique was in many dangerous situations. Angelique went missing
and her mother got involved along with the police. Those who were arrested were released. Anita now

How might standard educational practices fail to meet the needs of the differently abled? Provide an
example. Please use the text to support your post.
Answer:
Although I do not blame the school for thinking that it could be the parent’s fault that the child acts up.
In many cases this is what happens. Children act up at home and then act up at school, fortunate this
was not the case and they were able to help. I see this happen all the time at my job in a childcare
center. Some children get overwhelmed with so many other children being in the same room that they
act up. This is why it’s important to pay special attention and do observations and screenings on
children so any problems can be diagnosed early.

Stopping Invidious comparison
Invidious comparison is comparing oneself to others by race, sex, religion, class. Not only
does it make others feel lesser of themselves it can also make you feel depressed and stressed.
How can we put a stop to this? The first step is to understand and accept differences. No too
people are alike and there will always be someone smarter, stronger, more attractive, thinner,
wealthier or less capable, weaker, less attractive, heavier, and less wealthy. We must
acknowledge our strengths and other strengths and stop dwelling on weaknesses. If you start
to compare yourself to others stop yourself in your tracks. Count what you have and not what
you don’t have. Be ok with imperfection and work on goals to improve yourself.
Human service workers regularly deal with a lot of human suffering. How will you take care of yourself
so that you avoid vicarious traumatization? Please find a peer reviewed article in the UoP Library to
support your post. Please list the database you used to find the library.
7. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 7
Answer:
Many come into this profession because they are passionate about helping others and there passion
does not stay at work. There work follows them home. Many times human resource agents work past
office hours and into their personal life. I am passionate about children, and if a child needs help I will
continue to think about that child until their needs are met. This can be very stressful and tiring to
yourself and the family. To help I would make sure time is put away to spend with the family and is
never pushed aside.
What are some ideas that you have for teaching others how to stop invidious comparison? Please find
an article in the UoP library to support your post. Please list the database you used to find the article.
Answer:
It’s going to take the media and people working together to stop invidious comparison. For many
people it comes naturally because it’s what they learned growing up. I am sure all of us have seen a
person and thought in our heads something that wasn’t nice because of the person’s race, job,
clothing, or the way they looked. It’s human nature to compare you with others. The truth is all
individuals and all different. Great point sierra about using comparisons in a positive way. How can we
do this?
