ASSIGNMENT
DRIVE FALL 2017
PROGRAM MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)
SEMESTER III
SUBJECT CODE & NAME MI0035 – COMPUTER NETWORKS
BK ID B1973
CREDITS 4
MARKS 60
Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be
approximately of 400 words. Each question is followed by evaluation scheme.
Question.1. Elaborate the concept of computer networks. Briefly
explain the different types of networks.
Answer:A computer network or data network is a telecommunications network which allows nodes
to share resources. In computer networks, networked computing devices exchange data with each
other using a data link. The connections between nodes are establishedusing either cable media or
wireless media. The best-known computer network is the Internet.
Question.2. Write Short notes on:
a) Connectors
Answer:An electrical connector, is an electro-mechanical device used to join electrical terminations
and create an electrical circuit.Electrical connectorsconsistof plugs(male-ended)andjacks(female-
ended). The connection may be temporary, as for portable equipment, require a tool for assembly
and removal, or serve as a permanent electrical joint
b) PC Cards
Answer:In computing, PC Card is a configuration for computer parallel communication peripheral
interface, designed for laptop computers. Originallyintroduced as PCMCIA, the PC Card standard as
well as its successors like CardBus were defined and
c) Hubs
Answer:A hub is a common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly usedto
connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is
copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
Hubs and switches serve as a central connection for all
d) Bridges
Answer:When referring to computers, a bridge is a device that connects two local-area networks
(LANs), or two segments of the same LAN. Unlike a router, bridgesare protocol -independent. They
forward packets without analyzing and re-routing messages.
A network bridge is a computer networking device that creates a single aggregate network from
multiple communication networks or network segments. This function is called network bridging.
Bridging is distinct from routing, which allows multiple different networks to communicate
independently while remaining separate. In the OSI model, bridging is performed in the first two
layers, below the network layer (layer 3
Question.3. Explain the Elements of Communication System.
Elaborate on Modulation/Demodulation(Modem)
Answer:The purpose of a communication systemisto transmitintelligence signal fromasource to a
destination at some point away from the source. Figure 1 is a block diagram of a communication
system. This system consists three basic components: transmitter, channel, and receiver.
Question.4. Identify and explain the five types of classes of IP
Address. Also write few points on Privateand Public IP Addresses.

Question.5. Briefly discuss concept of Network Management Tools
and Applications.
Answer:The Network Management toolset of the OpUtils software monitors network performance,
calculates the bandwidth utilization, and scans the traffic for errors through SNMP. The tool also
provides asset details such as the OS, installed software, and hardware and informs you about the
general availability and performance of the network
