SEMESTER 2
SUBJECT CODE & NAME BT0068 - Computer Organization and
Architecture
CREDIT 4
BK ID B
MAX. MARKS 60
1. i). Find 10’s and 9’s complement of (348)10
Answer :
9 9 10
- 3 4 8
ii) Find 10’s and 9’s complement of (134795)10
Answer : The material covered in this class will be as follows:
• Complements
• Subtraction using
2 Draw and explain the Von- Neumann architecture. What are the drawbacks of it?
2. Answer : Von Neumann Architecture also known as the Von Neumann model, the computer
consisted of a CPU, memory and I/O devices. The program is stored in the memory. The CPU fetches
an instruction from the memory at a time and executes it.
3 Describe the types of busses and types of control lines.
Answer : All computers use three types of basic buses. The name of the bus is generally determined
by the type of signal it is carrying or the method of operation. We group the buses into three areas
as you see them in their most common uses. They are as follows: Control (also called timing and
control bus), address, and data (also called a memory bus) buses Instruction (I), Operand (O),
Input/Output Memory (I/O MEM) or Input/Output Controller (IOC), and Computer Interconnection
System (CIS) Time multiplexed bus
4 Explain Booth’s multiplication algorithm with its advantages and disadvantages.
Answer : Booth's multiplication algorithm is a multiplication algorithm that multiplies two signed
binary numbers in two's complement notation. The algorithm was invented by Andrew Donald
Booth in 1950 while doing research on crystallography at Birkbeck College in Bloomsbury, London.
Booth used desk calculators that were faster at shifting than adding and created the algorithm to
increase their speed. Booth's algorithm is of interest in the study of computer architecture.
5 Explain the concept of memory interleaving with diagram.
Answer : In computers, interleaving is a method of writing and reading data out of sequence. Data
interleaving is used to combine multiple digital data streams, like in files that contain both audio and
video. This technique is also used for memory interleave in disk storage and computer memory, used
to make data read and write more quickly. A de-interleaver uses mapping to decipher the
interleaved data; it is more or less a diagram of the interleaved pattern that the computer uses to
decipher the data.
6 Explain interrupt driven I/O. Describe the design issues in implementing interrupt driven I/O.
Answer : interrupt I/O A way of controlling input/output activity in which a peripheral or terminal
that needs to make or receive a data transfer sends a signal that causes a program interrupt to be
set. At a time appropriate to the priority level of the I/O interrupt, relative to the total interrupt
system, the processor enters an interrupt service routine (ISR). The function of the routine will
depend upon the system of interrupt levels and priorities that is implemented in the processor.
