Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

2. Morning
• Took a shower- To make the shower a hot one somewhere there had to be coal burning to produce the
electricity that produces the heat. That in turn releases sulfur that is combined with the oxygen in the air
and forms sulfur dioxide. That SO2 can cause acid rain which is deadly do an environment, smog, and
cause health problems such as lung disease. Carbon Dioxide is also involved cause it is released by a poor
maintained gas boiler. Overtime it can lead to deadly breathing diseases.
• Pick out my clothes- Moving and throwing my shirts and pants around releases small amounts of
Tetrachloroethylene. Of course this chemical does not harm us in one day but over time it accumulates
and gets in the way of repertory system when we are in our last years.
• Drove to school- Driving is a major reason why we have air pollution. The dangerous gas Carbon Monoxide
is released out of cars . Nitrogen Oxides like nitrogen dioxide and oxide come out of the engines and is a
big contributor to ozone and smog. When sunlight hits it forms ozone (O3) it is suppose to be high in the
atmosphere to protect us from ultraviolet light but when it is near at ground level it is considered a deadly
gas.
3. Morning(solutions)
• Try taking cold showers so that not as much burning of fossil fuels have to burn. And
Minimize the time I’m in the shower so that gallons of water can be preserved.
• Pick out my clothes smartly, and know what I’m going to wear before I start moving
everything around. And inform my family and friends of the possibilities of little things like
these that hurt us.
• Try car pooling with a lot of people so that the amounts of the emissions will be reduced.
4. Midday
• Going to the restroom after lunch everyday- Sewage is a good thing and indoor plumbing is
wonderful but it also pollutes the earth. Sure, most of the sewage is natural waste that can
be broken down and yes, most of it is also water. But people also flush down plastics and
chemicals like pills and other things that end up in lakes and rivers and hurt the ecosystem.
• Buying a lot of water bottles instead of reusing the same one-When people throw away
things it has to go somewhere. People in charge usually create landfills and these atrocities
pile up tons of trash and this trash leaks toxic chemicals that squirm their way into the soil
and waterways. Eventually they end up in rivers and lakes where they contaminate or kill fish.
• Buying plastic forks-Buying plastics increase the incentive for the people in charge to make
more and by making more we use a lot of energy. And the factories release even more sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides from combustion.
5. Midday(solutions)
• Reduce my restroom visits and tell people what we are doing to our
planet. Inform as many people as possible.
• Recycle my water bottles and other things. Go online and find ways to
reuse ,recycle, and renew.
• Try not to buy plastics as much and recycle the ones I have already bought.
Tell people the good things about recycling materials. Like if you recycle an
aluminum can you will save 95% of the energy it would’ve taken to make
another one.
6. Evening
• Wash hands with Dove soap- Using soaps and detergents wash down our
plumbing into waterways where chemicals pile up and cause water
pollution. We always want our houses and ourselves clean but we are
making the environment dirtier in the process.
• Washing my clothes when I get home- The waste water that comes from
using detergents(I use Tide) ends up in the sewage system. This leads to
enrichment in bodies of water where the water is taken over by plants and
algae, which can lead to algal bloom. Which means there are high levels of
nitrogen and mostly phosphate.
• Driving home in my Nissan Altima- Obviously this will release CO which
can lead to breathing diseases and nitrogen and carbon oxides. That,
combined with heat and VOCs can create Ozone.
7. Evening(solutions)
• Use Tobar Soap, an eco-friendly soap that will
not harm the environment.
• Use environmentally friendly soap and
detergents. They will not accumulate in the
draining systems.
• Carpool with friends or try and encourage bike
riding or taking the bus.
