E-learning has been rolled-out as a
training methodology for nurses in
Zambia.
The initiative is a five year program
through which 2000 young people are
expected to train as nurses.
Speaking during the launch on 13
October 2016, Minister of Health Dr
Chitalu Chilufya challenged partners
in the health sector to help
government address the human
resource for health.
The initiative is being jointly carried
out by Childfund International,
AMREF Health Care, Ministry of
Health, and General Nursing Council
of Zambia through the Zambia Nurse
and Life skills Training Program
(ZNLTP).
The partners have since embarked on
a capacity building program for Nurse
Tutors, Clinical Instructors and staff
Nurses on the wards through short
intensive courses.
Childfund Zambia National Director
Dereje Adugna announced during the
launch that the organisation has
started giving out full and partial
scholarships to vulnerable youth in all
the schools where the program is
being implemented.
Among the Nursing Schools
undertaking the ZNLTP are
Chikankata, Chipata, Kabwe, Kitwe,
Livingstone, Mansa, Monze, Mufulira,
Mukinge, Ndola and Solwezi.

ZUNO celebrates ZCTU Golden Jubilee
On 21 October 2016, the Zambia Union of Nurses
Organisation (ZUNO) joined the Zambia Congress
of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in celebrating 50 years of
fighting for workers’ rights.
Other 42 affiliates Unions under ZCTU were also
part of the colorful Golden Jubilee celebrations
under the theme: “Sustaining the worker’s
struggle for social Justice and decent jobs”.
Labour minister Mrs Joyce Simukoko who also
represented the Republican President Edgar Lungu
officially kicked-off the commemorations
characterised by a march past, song and dance,
solidarity messages and award presentation to
those who have distinctively contributed to the
advancement of worker’s rights in Zambia.
Solidarity messages where heard from a wide
spectrum of partners and stakeholders that
included the Zambian Government, International
Labour Organisation and the Zambia Federation of
Employers highlighting and appreciating the role
that ZCTU has and continues to play in
contributing to Zambia’s social, economic and
political development.

ZUNO Central & Southern Provinces elect PEC
ZUNO Central and Sothern Provinces held their
quadrennial conferences making them the fifth and
sixth provinces respectively to hold such a conference
during which they elected their Provincial Executive
Committee (PEC).
Central province had the conference on 7th
October
2016, where Mr Eugene Kanta was elected as
Chairperson deputised by Mr.Jasiel Edson Ngoma.
Others are Provincial Organising Secretary Godfrey
Mulenga, Vice Hellen Katungu, Treasurer Mr. Justin
Mhlanga, and Ms. Lwita Bupe as his Vice.
As for Sothern Province, the Acting Chairperson Mr
Gibson Kabombo (now Chairperson), Provincial
Organising Secretary Mrs Loveness Chikumbi, and
Treasurer Ms. Mary Sinyangwe retained their positions.
Others who have joined the team are Mr Chris
Mubanga elected as Vice Chairperson, Ms Christine N
. Siatwiinda as Vice Provincial Organising Secretary,
and Ms Milumbe Mwale as the Vice Treasurer.
Four more provinces are yet to hold Quadrennial
Conferences to discuss ZUNO activities in their areas
and elect the PEC as follows;

Student Boards vital to advancing professionalism-ZUNO

ZUNO President Liseli Sitali has observed that
student boards are vital to advancing professionalism
among graduating nurses and Midwives.
Mr Sitali noted that through boards, student Nurses
and Midwives will have first hand experience of having
a unity of purpose as professionals and have their
professional skills sharpened through knowledge
sharing and other capacity building activities.
He disclosed that ZUNO through working with the
General Nursing Council of Zambia and ministry of
Health plans to establish student boards in all Colleges
and Universities offering Nursing and Midwifery
courses.
Mr Sitali explained that as a professional body and
trade union, ZUNO is interested in strengthening its
professional arm in the professional development of
Nurses and Midwives in Zambia and has since urged
all College and University Managements to create
platforms for student engagement.
He said ZUNO plans to build capacity in research,
leadership and management skills among the students
through organisation and participation in professional
conferences and trainings.

Central Province holds combined graduation
On 14th
October 2016, Central Province
held combined graduation ceremony for
222Registered Nurses and Registered
Midwives from Kabwe Schools of Nursing
and Midwifery and Agape Nursing College.
This happened to be the 4th
Graduation
ceremony for registered Nurses and the 1st
for
Registered Midwives.
Provincial Minister Sidney Mushanga
officiated during the event noting that
government’s main objective concerning
human resource in the health sector is to
improve the availability and distribution of
qualified health workers to all health facilities.
Mr Mushanga implored the graduates to
always remember that patients are the centre
of the profession and uphold professional
ethical conduct with the highest level of
competence. The minister assured the nursing
institutions of governments support as they
continue producing competent and caring
nurses for the country.
ZUNO mourns HWUZ President
ZUNO is deeply saddened over the death of Health Workers
Union of Zambia ( HWUZ)President Chrispin K Sampa.
The Late Mr Sampa who was the first founding President of
HWUZ died at Ndola Central Hospital on 12 October 2016. He
was buried on Saturday on 15 October 2016.
May his Soul rest in Peace.
