The story "Dead Stars" by Paz Marquez-Benitez is about a love triangle between Alfredo, Esperanza, and Julia in the early 1900s in the Philippines. Alfredo is engaged to Esperanza but meets Julia and falls in love with her. 2. Paz Marquez- Benitez
(1894-1983)
- Born in 1894 in Lucena, Tayabas
(now Quezon)
- Authored the first Filipino modern
English language short story, Dead
Stars, published in the Philippine
Herald in 1925.

-Born into the prominent Marquez family of
Quezon province, she was among the first
generation of Filipino people trained in the
American education system which used
English as the medium of instruction.
- She graduated high school in Tayabas High
School now, Quezon National High School.
She was a member of the first freshman
class of the University of the Philippines,
graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
1912.
4. - Two years after graduation, she married
UP College of Education Dean Francisco
Benítez with whom she had four children.
-Márquez-Benítez later became a teacher
at the University of the Philippines, who
taught short-story writing and had become
an influential figure to many Filipino
writers in the English language.
5. -Although she only had one more published
short story after "Dead Stars" entitled "A Night
in the Hills," she made her mark in Philippine
literature because the former is considered the
first modern Philippine short story.
-For Marquez-Benitez, writing was a lifelong
occupation. In 1919, she founded "Woman's
Home Journal," the first women's magazine in
the country.
6. -When her husband died in 1951,
she took over as editor of the
Philippine Journal of Education at
UP. She held the editorial post for
over two decades.
-In 1995, her daughter Virginia
Benitez- Licuanan wrote her
biography "Paz Marquez-Benitez:
One Woman's Life, Letters, and
Writings."

Julia, still unmarried and hr goes to

his father. He met Julia Salas in

Del Valle. In time Alfredo fell
in love with Julia. Julia did not

in a short period of time and one
day, we will have to make the right
choices for the happiness of the
ones we love like Alfredo, he chose
to marry Esperanza over Julia
because Esperanza was the one
being liked by his family for him.
He had no choice but to pick which

as to do not hurt Esperanza, the one she
love before Julia came. He doesn’t want
also to break their upcoming wedding. As
people, we may fall in love at the wrong
time, which is may force us to home
conflict with ourselves. When he met Julia,
he began to fell in love with her, but that
time, he was already engaged for three
17. years with Esperanza. He
become a little bit confused whether
what to choose between something
he wanted to do against something
he had to go. Although he fell out of
love with Esperanza, he still chose
her because of an agreement and
understanding between their
families. He still wanted to be fair at
even if it is difficult.
18. In the story, Alfredo
struggles against his fate
and the circumstances of
life and love facing him. He
needs to face problems in
choosing between difficult
choices of his life. Everyone
takes it for granted that
Alfredo eventually marry
Esperanza.
19. But although he is ashamed to
admit it, the intensity of his
passion for Esperanza has faded,
and he is attracted to Julia,
whom he meets at a dinner
party.
20. But he is aware that all his loved
ones including Julia would
disapprove of his failure to honor
his understanding with
Esperanza. So he and Esperanza
get married and have a family.

dream, his star. He thought he's in love.
But like a dead star so far away, and
whose shine could be the leftover
traveling light from it, he was long way
getting the girl and he realized that he
is no longer attracted to her.

is like a dead star, whose shine
is still visible from the earth for
years after they are gone.
25. The author tells the story in third
person because he used pronouns
like they, she, he, it and many more.
We know only what the character

him or her to tell us.
