Joy Cowley was born in 1936 in New Zealand and came from a poor background, having to take on household responsibilities while her parents were often sick. She has loved reading since childhood and had an accident while biking to school as she was engrossed in a story. Joy has gone on to write over 600 books for children, young adults and adults, including stories, poems, prayers and plays.

2. Biography Joy Cowley was born in 1936 in Levin, New Zealand. She is the oldest of 5 children. Her parents were often sick, so she was left to do most of the jobs around the home. She came from quite a poor background, and didn’t have much. She has loved reading ever since she was a little girl and used to read books as she walked to school. One day her neighbour gave her their old bike to use on the way to school. On her way to school, she was so engrossed in her story, that she crashed into the back of a parked car!
