What is 30?
What is 30?
Does 30 = 0?
• we know that 34
∙ 30
= 34
because we add the exponents when the
bases are the same
• But this is a contradiction because we also know that anything we
multiply by zero is zero
What is 30?
Does 30 = 3?
• If 30
= 3, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 34
∙ 30
= (3 ∙ 3 ∙ 3 ∙ 3) ∙ 3
• But this is a contradiction because we can see that this is 35 but should
be 34 based on the rule for multiplying exponents
 Simplify the following expression as much as possible
