This is the Lesson 4 of the "Azure Governance - Free training" serie.
This document presents Azure Policy in-depth and lists all key items you should now when designing your Azure Policy Model.
Finally, the document describes all methods/tools (GUI & CLI) you can use to create, manage and assign Policy (Definition and Initiative Definition) to your Azure environment.
Creating and using a Custom Policies is also detailed on this document.
In this presentation, we will do assess the on-premises environment and determining what workloads and databases are ready to make the move and what can you do to improve their Azure readiness while reducing downtime during the migration. Planning and assessment plays a critical role in moving to the cloud. We would see wide range of resources and tools to get an assessment completed with ease while identifying workload dependencies with practical tips and tricks focusing on sizing and costs. And finally, we’ll assess the SQL instances and identify their readiness for Azure as well.

Disaster Recovery, Continuity of Operations, Backup, and Archive on AWS | AWS...Amazon Web Services
Traditional disaster recovery (DR) has had a spotty record for enterprises. This session compares conventional approaches to DR to those using the AWS cloud and talks about the four ascending levels of AWS DR options and the benefits and tradeoffs among them. The session goes on to discuss backup and restore architectures both using partner products and solutions that assist in backup, recovery, DR, and continuity of operations (COOP).
When cloud computing services were introduced in the mid-2000s with compute and storage offered for pennies on the dollar, the world of IT changed forever. While prices have come down significantly over the years, many companies learned the hard way that moving to the public cloud didn’t always achieve the cost savings they expected.
In fact, organizations have frequently noticed public cloud bills that are two to three times higher than expectations.moving to the public cloud is a mistake. The public cloud provides huge benefits in agility, responsiveness, simplified operations, and improved innovation. The mistake is assuming that migrating to the public cloud without implementing management, governance and automation will lead to cost savings.
The first step to combating rising Microsoft Azure costs is to gain visibility across your entire organization’s cloud spend. Once you’ve identified the areas of high and/or rapidly growing costs, use these proven best practices for cost reduction and optimization to make sure you are getting the most out of your cloud investment.
Zero Credential Development with Managed IdentitiesJoonas Westlin
Keys are always needed to access services in Azure and beyond. Storing and managing keys presents many problems, for example rotating and disabling them. Keys often also allow blanket access to the service with no way to limit it. Sometimes there is only one key that needs to be shared by services, so you won't have any way to disable access from one individually. In this talk we will go through Managed Identities for Azure Resources, how they work, and how you can use them to use Azure services in a secure way without having to manage any keys yourself. We will go through a demo application which uses various Azure services through a managed identity, removing the need to use keys entirely. The source code will be available to the audience so they have samples that they can use to implement managed identities in their own applications.

Using feature flags in an ASP.NET Core app on AzureJoonas Westlin
Larger features may take a long time to develop, but you still want to deploy production updates during development. Or maybe you want the users to be able to preview upcoming features? Either way, feature flags can resolve the issue.
In this presentation we take a look at using feature flags in an ASP.NET Core application running in Azure App Service. We use the Microsoft.FeatureManagement library to support both development-time feature flags and user-specific preview feature flags. The Azure App Configuration service's feature flag support is also explored.

Building a document e-signing workflow with Azure Durable FunctionsJoonas Westlin
Durable functions offer an interesting programming model for building workflows. Whether you need to sometimes split and do multiple things or wait for user input, a lot of things are possible. They do present some challenges as well, and the limitations of orchestrator functions can make working with Durable seem very complicated.
In this talk we will go through the basics of Durable Functions along with strategies for deploying and monitoring them. A sample application will be presented where users can send documents for electronic signature. A Durable Functions workflow will power the signing process.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Quarkus Hidden and Forbidden ExtensionsMax Andersen
Quarkus has a vast extension ecosystem and is known for its subsonic and subatomic feature set. Some of these features are not as well known, and some extensions are less talked about, but that does not make them less interesting - quite the opposite.
Come join this talk to see some tips and tricks for using Quarkus and some of the lesser known features, extensions and development techniques.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
OpenFOAM solver for Helmholtz equation, helmholtzFoam / helmholtzBubbleFoamtakuyayamamoto1800
In this slide, we show the simulation example and the way to compile this solver.
In this solver, the Helmholtz equation can be solved by helmholtzFoam. Also, the Helmholtz equation with uniformly dispersed bubbles can be simulated by helmholtzBubbleFoam.

12. System-assigned? User-assigned?
• System-assigned identities
tied to a resource like App
Service or a VM
• Deleted when the resource
is deleted
• User-assigned identities
can be assigned to multiple
resources
• A resource can have more
than one
• Independent lifecycle

19. Advanced: Usage against custom APIs
• Register at least 1 application permission
• Assign the permission(s) to managed identity
• Acquire tokens with API client id / app ID URI
25. Local development
• Services like SQL and Storage can be run locally
• Must get access tokens differently
• No Managed Identity
• Can use user identity
• Or use client credentials
27. Supported methods
• Managed Identity
• Visual Studio
• AZ CLI
• Integrated Windows Authentication
• Client id + secret
• Client id + certificate (can be local or in Key Vault)
• Advanced options unlocked by using connection string
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/key-vault/service-to-service-authentication
28. Suggestions for local development
• Use Visual Studio / AZ CLI / IWA for cases where it works
• RunAs=Developer; DeveloperTool=VisualStudio
• RunAs=Developer; DeveloperTool=AzureCli
• Use client id + secret / certificate where it does not
• RunAs=App;AppId={AppId};TenantId={TenantId};AppKey={Client
Secret}
• RunAs=App;AppId={AppId};TenantId={TenantId};CertificateThum
bprint={Thumbprint};CertificateStoreLocation={LocalMachine or
CurrentUser}
29. Takeaways
• Using Managed Identity is seriously recommended if
your app runs on Azure
• Access any service that supports Azure AD authentication
in a secure way
• Free service that can remove all secrets from your code
• .NET apps should use the AppAuthentication library
• Local development requires some effort
