This study examined the dialogical validity of widely used Western measures of religion by assessing their relationships with an Islamic perspective on psychological functioning from Iranian philosopher Mortazā Motahharī. Motahharī described the "Perfect Man" as having both integrative self-knowledge and self-control. The study found that several religious scales correlated with or predicted measures of these constructs, supporting their validity for exploring Muslim perspectives. Some scales had ambiguous or maladaptive implications, illustrating how etic and emic understandings can clarify each other.
