“The CIBC Youthvision Scholarship Program gave me the confidence to continue
to pursue academic excellence. Throughout high school I continued to earn above
90's marks and I graduated University with an 86% average. If I hadn't won the
scholarship I would have had to work a lot more during high school and this could
of affected my marks. I also would have graduated with debt and I wouldn't have
been able to purchase my first house at 22 and travel which was integral to my
personal development.”

CIBC Youthvision™ Scholarship Program
15 years, over 450 lives changed.
“My parents had separated when I was 10 years old and we had moved from Calgary to
Edmonton. The move was a jolt for me because I had to leave my friends and school. At
the age of 12, my father passed away, leaving my mom to support us single-handedly. I
also started working at the age of 15 at Subway so that I could contribute to the family
household. I remember, due to the changes in my life, that I was not doing well in school,
and was bullied by other kids. Despite the fact that my mom worked 12-14 hours a day,
she always spent an hour with me every morning at 6am going over my homework and
ensuring I did well. She had great hopes for us but always thought that post-secondary
education would put us further in debt. Because of the scholarship, not only could I
pursue post secondary education, but I was guaranteed summer employment each year
to help with household income.”

CIBC Youthvision™ Scholarship Program
15 years, over 450 lives changed.
“Being awarded the Scholarship at such a young age enabled me to plan ahead, focus
time that would otherwise have been spent searching for summer jobs and scholarships
on my studies, and reduce stress during a period that tends to be high-stress. It provided
an end goal to high school, a reason to study extra hard and made me an attractive
candidate for post-secondary education. Most importantly, I am sure the being awarded
the Scholarship at such an early age, allowed me to sleep well and focus on my studies
instead of spending many-a-sleepless night worrying about how I was going to make ends
meet on my own.”

“The scholarship, and the opportunities it brought, had an immeasurable impact on my
family. My family always wanted the best for me as a child and recognized that post-
secondary education was crucial to enabling me to push the limits of achievement. The
financial component of the award coupled with the YMCA job experience helped me set
my limits higher and mature as an individual; these changes made a positive impact on
my relationship with my family and brought those around me much happiness.”

“My father raised myself and my brother on his own and my father had a very limited
income as he is disabled and unable to work. When my father and I received the news
that I had won the CIBC Youthvision Scholarship, I did not immediately realize what it
would mean for the rest of the family, but my father certainly did. It would mean that my
father, in depending on my scholarship paying for my undergrad, could concentrate on
saving enough money to support my brother in his undergraduate studies. Thus, in
winning the Youthvision Scholarship, this amazing opportunity to pursue post-secondary
studies was afforded not only to me, but also to my brother.”

“I am one of ten children born into a single parent household. Winning the CIBC
Youthvision Scholarship gave my mother the opportunity to take a breath, of relief, and
focus on the well-being of her other children. Without this scholarship my life would have
turned out completely different. I am not a statistic because of this generous gift. The
CIBC Youthvision Scholarship helped my family overcome one of the many barriers that
face low-income families. ”

“As I look back now, I realize how many doors have been opened since winning the
Scholarship. I would not be where I am today if not for those doors that were open. One
of the first doors that opened up was my summer internship opportunity that I have
completed at Hamilton Public Health Services for the last two years. Through that
internship, I was presented with the opportunity to volunteer with a youth-led health
advocacy group called Unfiltered Facts, through which I made other connections and now
represent youth in the city through the Hamilton Youth Advisory Committee. Thanks to
the scholarship, I can only imagine what the future holds as I enter University in
September.”

Camilo Sanchez Galindo 2011 Recipient CIBC Youthvision™ Scholarship Program 15 years, over 450 lives changed. “As I look back now, I realize how many doors have been opened since winning the Scholarship. I would not be where I am today if not for those doors that were open. One of the first doors that opened up was my summer internship opportunity that I have completed at Hamilton Public Health Services for the last two years. Through that internship, I was presented with the opportunity to volunteer with a youth-led health advocacy group called Unfiltered Facts, through which I made other connections and now represent youth in the city through the Hamilton Youth Advisory Committee. Thanks to the scholarship, I can only imagine what the future holds as I enter University in September.”
