OUR MISSION OUR ESSENCE VALUES
ANNUAL REPORT 2005 - 2006 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA 3
Business education is more important
than ever. Small business represents
98% of all our small businesses and
accounts for 57% of private sector
jobs. Junior Achievement of British
Columbia (JABC), in partnership with
our stakeholders, is helping to build the
business leaders of tomorrow, giving
youth the skills they need to compete in
a competitive and global market.
Our programs continue to inspire,
enlighten and educate, as we embrace
change in our province. This year, the
Board of Directors approved a new
Strategic Plan that will boldly guide
us over the next three years. The
plan lays out three goals – program
relevancy; sustainability; and operational
excellence. A number of initiatives are
already underway.
One such initiative was the creation
of the Business Laureates of BC Hall
of Fame. This announcement was met
with an overwhelming response from
the business community and three
inaugural Laureates were inducted at a
Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony in
May. Our special thanks to Jim Shepard,
Chair, and Barbara Brink, Co-Chair, for
their strong leadership and dedication
to this hugely successful event.
In May, JABC was awarded a $2 million
grant from the provincial government.
This new funding will provide us with
the opportunity to expand our reach in
a measured and focused way ensuring
access to JA programs in communities
not served in the past.
Nevertheless, our existing and long-
standing donors remain essential to
our success, as the province’s funding
will be used specifically for expansion
purposes. We simply can’t thank our
corporate and individual donors
enough for their generosity and
continued belief in our mission.
Our commitment to involve the
community partners extends across the
province. In January, we hired Anne
Sashikata as Community Relations
Manager. The position was created to
ensure we have the resources to build
key relationships and recruit volunteers
who advance the education and future
achievements of youth.
This year approximately 860 volunteers
mentored over 26,000 JA students.
Our volunteers are the ones who
bring the real world of work into
the classroom and inspire the next
generation of business leaders. We
could not deliver our programs without
them and we thank them for their
dedication and enthusiasm!
And, of course, we are very proud
of our JA students who continue to
surpass our expectations. Again, this
year, they participated on national and
global stages, representing BC and
Canada in conferences and competitions
across North America.
JABC’s future is filled with ambitious
plans, led by a bold vision of expansion.
With the ongoing support from our
donors, volunteers and educators, JABC
will accomplish this while ensuring we
maintain the quality and commitment in
communities we already serve.

Provincial Government Austeville Properties Western Economic

In May 2006, the Provincial
Government announced it would
provide a $2 million grant to
help expand Junior Achievement
throughout BC. The funding, provided
by the Ministry of Small Business
and Revenue, and the Ministry of
Education, will be used to ensure JA
programs will be available to all school
districts by 2010.
“We want more students to have basic
business and financial skills, and these
school programs will give young people
the knowledge and confidence they
need to thrive in our fast-paced world.
Junior Achievement’s programs will help
train and inspire new generations of
entrepreneurs, innovators and business
leaders.”
The Honourable Gordon Campbell
Premier of British Columbia
For 14 years Austeville Properties
has provided Junior Achievement of
British Columbia with much needed
office space in downtown Vancouver.
This significant gift means that we
have been able to use more of our
development dollars to directly service
youth through our business education
programs. Austeville Properties
understands the vital role JABC plays
in educating young people and the
importance of providing innovative
business opportunities to students.
By supporting JABC since 2001,
Western Economic Diversification
Canada (WD) has been able to make
a direct investment in activities that
develop and diversify the Western
Canadian economy. Our programs
that have benefited from their
funding include JA Titan, “A World of
Choices” Career Conferences, and
the BC and Inter-Provincial Business
Challenges. WD has also played an
enormous role in helping us sustain
communities in the North by funding
the Prince George office and providing
funds to develop community partners
throughout the province.
“Canada’s New Government proudly supports Junior Achievement British Columbia
in nurturing and inspiring future leaders. Along with many adult volunteers, we
want to help young people to have the chance to achieve their highest potential
wherever they live.”

Economic Diversification and Minister of National Revenue

For over 20 years, RBC Financial
Group has been supporting JABC
and most recently, specifically for
the “Economics of Staying in School”
program. With both financial and
volunteer support for this program,
they have helped thousands of
students understand the importance
of education as it relates to their long-
term career goals.
“RBC Financial Group is proud to support
initiatives that help young Canadians
realize their potential. A key area of
interest for RBC are programs that help
keep kids in school, as well as those that
provide financial literacy programs to
youth. That is why for over 20 years RBC
has been dedicated to Junior Achievements
programs including the ‘Economics of
Staying in School’ by providing financial
support and RBC employees
as volunteers.”

RBC Financial Group
The Lotte and John Hecht Memorial
Foundation is one of JABC’s longest
standing donors. Supporting JABC
since 1976, their mandate is to support
economic education that promotes
the principles of a free market. Their
funding has contributed to the growth
of the “Company Program – A Student
Venture”, the “Business Basics” Series
and most recently the “Economics of
Staying in School” program.
HSBC Bank Canada has been a
long-standing supporter of JABC
and in 2004, they helped launch the
“Investment Strategies Program” with
significant financial and volunteer
support. This program teaches youth
to make smart, socially responsible
investment choices by instilling financial
knowledge and explaining what options
are available for saving and investing
their money.
“HSBC Bank Canada is very pleased to
support Junior Achievement of British
Columbia’s ‘Investment Strategies
Program’. This innovative program
encourages students to be financially
responsible by teaching them how to save
and invest. By supporting educational
programs such as this one, HSBC Bank
Canada seeks to build the confidence and
abilities of young people.”

We are pleased to announce that Brian Phillips has won the H.E. Miskiman
Leadership Award for 2006. This award was established to recognize a
volunteer who has made a significant contribution to Junior Achievement.
Brain has been volunteering with JABC since 2002, most recently as a
member of the Board of Directors and business consultant in the ISP
program. His involvement with Junior Achievement goes back 35 years when
Brian participated in The Company Program in Edmonton.

What could be more impressive
than people who donate their time,
knowledge, energy and enthusiasm
to affect the lives and learning of a
student? This year more than 860
JABC volunteers made a commitment
to help us lead and enhance the lives
of youth around British Columbia. By
sharing their own business and career
experiences, they become real-life
examples of successful people in the
business world.
Our volunteers are from a vast array of
industries and positions. Many of our
corporate supporters have recruited
and encouraged their employees to
participate. Members of community
groups and business associations have
also spent time in our classrooms. Even
business students from universities and
colleges have eagerly volunteered for
Junior Achievement programs.
The first-time volunteers like Cindy
Muscroft and Ricky Dhiman are often
surprised and delighted with their
JA experience, while our veteran
volunteers like John Hinze and Jody
Bialowas continue to challenge
themselves by signing up for different
programs and roles.
JABC would like to thank each and
every volunteer for their efforts.
Without them, we would not be able to
inspire so many youth to pursue their
dreams and reach their highest potential.
“Volunteers offer different perspectives
that may not be available in the school
classroom. I think JA plays an important
role in the development opportunities for
our youth, whether offering different ideas
and information or different challenges and
leadership opportunities.”
Brian Phillips
Winner of the H.E. Miskiman Leadership Award
for 2006
“I delivered the first session on
Organization today... and it was so
much fun! The kids were so involved in
the activity – you would not believe what
ideas they came up with... The teacher said
she was really amazed at the response of
the children. I would love to do this as
a full time job. It is a riot! I am so glad
I got this opportunity.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2005 - 2006 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA 15
Samantha Larkan and Stephen Mellows, from Vernon BC, advanced
to the fourth and final round of the Hewlett-Packard Global Business
Challenge and traveled to Cupertino, California this past summer to
compete against seven other finalist teams from around the world.
Earlier this year Samantha and Stephen participated in the JA Titan
program and excelled in Business Challenge games.
“I feel [Junior Achievement] was something of an unforgettable experience
that has helped me focus on my future goals in business.”
Samantha Larkan, Grade 11 JA Titan student
The Society’s total revenue increased by
28% compared with the previous year.
Program sponsorships and fundraising
special events grew by $236K. The
Business Laureates Hall of Fame Gala
Dinner and Induction Ceremonies was
introduced this year and accounts for
most of the changes.
Expenses increased by 13% mainly due
to the Business Laureates of BC Hall
of Fame initiative.
A grant of $2 million was received from
the Province of British Columbia. The
grant is accounted for as an investment
under current assets and as externally
restricted deferred revenue under
liabilities. The grant will be spent over
a five year period. It will be used to
expand our student reach and provide JA
programs to communities that have not
been served in the past.

16 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ANNUAL REPORT 2005 - 2006
Excerpt from Auditors’ Report
The auditors, Deloitte & Touche LLP, in
their report dated August 24, 2006, have
reported that “in common with many
non-profit organizations, the Society
derives revenue from contributions, the
completeness of which is not susceptible
to satisfactory audit verification.
Accordingly, our verification of these
revenues was limited to the amounts
recorded in the records of the Society and
we were not able to determine whether
any adjustments might be necessary to
contribution revenue, excess of revenue
over expenses, assets and net assets.
In our opinion, except for the effect of
adjustments, if any, which we might have
determined to be necessary had we been
able to satisfy ourselves concerning the
completeness of the contribution revenue
referred to in the preceding paragraph,
these financial statements present fairly, in
all material respects, the financial position
of the Society as at June 30, 2006 and the
results of its operations and its cash flows
for the year then ended in accordance with
Canadian generally accepted principles.”

  • 4. Business education is more important than ever. Small business represents 98% of all our small businesses and accounts for 57% of private sector jobs. Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC), in partnership with our stakeholders, is helping to build the business leaders of tomorrow, giving youth the skills they need to compete in a competitive and global market. Our programs continue to inspire, enlighten and educate, as we embrace change in our province. This year, the Board of Directors approved a new Strategic Plan that will boldly guide us over the next three years. The plan lays out three goals – program relevancy; sustainability; and operational excellence. A number of initiatives are already underway. One such initiative was the creation of the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame. This announcement was met with an overwhelming response from the business community and three inaugural Laureates were inducted at a Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony in May. Our special thanks to Jim Shepard, Chair, and Barbara Brink, Co-Chair, for their strong leadership and dedication to this hugely successful event. In May, JABC was awarded a $2 million grant from the provincial government. This new funding will provide us with the opportunity to expand our reach in a measured and focused way ensuring access to JA programs in communities not served in the past. Nevertheless, our existing and long- standing donors remain essential to our success, as the province’s funding will be used specifically for expansion purposes. We simply can’t thank our corporate and individual donors enough for their generosity and continued belief in our mission. Our commitment to involve the community partners extends across the province. In January, we hired Anne Sashikata as Community Relations Manager. The position was created to ensure we have the resources to build key relationships and recruit volunteers who advance the education and future achievements of youth. This year approximately 860 volunteers mentored over 26,000 JA students. Our volunteers are the ones who bring the real world of work into the classroom and inspire the next generation of business leaders. We could not deliver our programs without them and we thank them for their dedication and enthusiasm! And, of course, we are very proud of our JA students who continue to surpass our expectations. Again, this year, they participated on national and global stages, representing BC and Canada in conferences and competitions across North America. JABC’s future is filled with ambitious plans, led by a bold vision of expansion. With the ongoing support from our donors, volunteers and educators, JABC will accomplish this while ensuring we maintain the quality and commitment in communities we already serve. • 7. Each year, new Laureates will be formally welcomed into The Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame at the Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremonies. Nominated by their peers, inductees are selected following a careful review of all nominations by our independent Selection Committee — a distinguished panel representing BC’s foremost business, academic and media institutions. They Built. We Benefit. These words represent the foundation of the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame. While they may have succeeded in different industries, at different times in our history, and in different parts of our great province, the Laureates who have the respect of their peers, exemplify excellence, integrity, and sound business ethics. Their careers are legendary. Provincial Government Austeville Properties Western Economic Diversification Canada In May 2006, the Provincial Government announced it would provide a $2 million grant to help expand Junior Achievement throughout BC. The funding, provided by the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue, and the Ministry of Education, will be used to ensure JA programs will be available to all school districts by 2010. “We want more students to have basic business and financial skills, and these school programs will give young people the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in our fast-paced world. Junior Achievement’s programs will help train and inspire new generations of entrepreneurs, innovators and business leaders.” The Honourable Gordon Campbell Premier of British Columbia For 14 years Austeville Properties has provided Junior Achievement of British Columbia with much needed office space in downtown Vancouver. This significant gift means that we have been able to use more of our development dollars to directly service youth through our business education programs. Austeville Properties understands the vital role JABC plays in educating young people and the importance of providing innovative business opportunities to students. By supporting JABC since 2001, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) has been able to make a direct investment in activities that develop and diversify the Western Canadian economy. Our programs that have benefited from their funding include JA Titan, “A World of Choices” Career Conferences, and the BC and Inter-Provincial Business Challenges. WD has also played an enormous role in helping us sustain communities in the North by funding the Prince George office and providing funds to develop community partners throughout the province. “Canada’s New Government proudly supports Junior Achievement British Columbia in nurturing and inspiring future leaders. Along with many adult volunteers, we want to help young people to have the chance to achieve their highest potential wherever they live.” The Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of National Revenue POWERFUL PARTNERSHIPS Fund Development 8 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ANNUAL REPORT 2005 - 2006

RBC Foundation The Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation HSBC Bank Canada For over 20 years, RBC Financial Group has been supporting JABC and most recently, specifically for the “Economics of Staying in School” program. With both financial and volunteer support for this program, they have helped thousands of students understand the importance of education as it relates to their long- term career goals. “RBC Financial Group is proud to support initiatives that help young Canadians realize their potential. A key area of interest for RBC are programs that help keep kids in school, as well as those that provide financial literacy programs to youth. That is why for over 20 years RBC has been dedicated to Junior Achievements programs including the ‘Economics of Staying in School’ by providing financial support and RBC employees as volunteers.” Tim Manning Regional Vice-President, Commercial Banking, BC RBC Financial Group The Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation is one of JABC’s longest standing donors. Supporting JABC since 1976, their mandate is to support economic education that promotes the principles of a free market. Their funding has contributed to the growth of the “Company Program – A Student Venture”, the “Business Basics” Series and most recently the “Economics of Staying in School” program. HSBC Bank Canada has been a long-standing supporter of JABC and in 2004, they helped launch the “Investment Strategies Program” with significant financial and volunteer support. This program teaches youth to make smart, socially responsible investment choices by instilling financial knowledge and explaining what options are available for saving and investing their money. “HSBC Bank Canada is very pleased to support Junior Achievement of British Columbia’s ‘Investment Strategies Program’. This innovative program encourages students to be financially responsible by teaching them how to save and invest. • 10. We are pleased to announce that Brian Phillips has won the H.E. Miskiman Leadership Award for 2006. This award was established to recognize a volunteer who has made a significant contribution to Junior Achievement. Brain has been volunteering with JABC since 2002, most recently as a member of the Board of Directors and business consultant in the ISP program. His involvement with Junior Achievement goes back 35 years when Brian participated in The Company Program in Edmonton. Opposite page, clockwise from top left: Cindy Muscroft, RBC Royal Bank; Ricky Dhiman, Westminster Savings Credit Union; John Hinze, BC Securities Commission; Jody Bialowas and Clara Clayton both from Petro-Canada What could be more impressive than people who donate their time, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to affect the lives and learning of a student? This year more than 860 JABC volunteers made a commitment to help us lead and enhance the lives of youth around British Columbia. By sharing their own business and career experiences, they become real-life examples of successful people in the business world. Our volunteers are from a vast array of industries and positions. Many of our corporate supporters have recruited and encouraged their employees to participate. Members of community groups and business associations have also spent time in our classrooms. Even business students from universities and colleges have eagerly volunteered for Junior Achievement programs. The first-time volunteers like Cindy Muscroft and Ricky Dhiman are often surprised and delighted with their JA experience, while our veteran volunteers like John Hinze and Jody Bialowas continue to challenge themselves by signing up for different programs and roles. JABC would like to thank each and every volunteer for their efforts. Without them, we would not be able to inspire so many youth to pursue their dreams and reach their highest potential. “Volunteers offer different perspectives that may not be available in the school classroom. I think JA plays an important role in the development opportunities for our youth, whether offering different ideas and information or different challenges and leadership opportunities.” Brian Phillips Winner of the H.E. Miskiman Leadership Award for 2006 “I delivered the first session on Organization today... and it was so much fun! The kids were so involved in the activity – you would not believe what ideas they came up with... The teacher said she was really amazed at the response of the children. I would love to do this as a full time job. It is a riot! I am so glad I got this opportunity.” Business Basics volunteer MEET OUR ROLE MODELS Volunteers 10 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ANNUAL REPORT 2005 - 2006

Earlier this year Samantha and Stephen participated in the JA Titan program and excelled in Business Challenge games. “I feel [Junior Achievement] was something of an unforgettable experience that has helped me focus on my future goals in business.” Samantha Larkan, Grade 11 JA Titan student The Society’s total revenue increased by 28% compared with the previous year. Program sponsorships and fundraising special events grew by $236K. The Business Laureates Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremonies was introduced this year and accounts for most of the changes. Expenses increased by 13% mainly due to the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame initiative. A grant of $2 million was received from the Province of British Columbia. The grant is accounted for as an investment under current assets and as externally restricted deferred revenue under liabilities. The grant will be spent over a five year period. It will be used to expand our student reach and provide JA programs to communities that have not been served in the past. Excerpt from Auditors’ Report The auditors, Deloitte & Touche LLP, in their report dated August 24, 2006, have reported that “in common with many non-profit organizations, the Society derives revenue from contributions, the completeness of which is not susceptible to satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the Society and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to contribution revenue, excess of revenue over expenses, assets and net assets. In our opinion, except for the effect of adjustments, if any, which we might have determined to be necessary had we been able to satisfy ourselves concerning the completeness of the contribution revenue referred to in the preceding paragraph, these financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Society as at June 30, 2006 and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian generally accepted principles.” Expenses Revenue Changes in Fund Balances Excess (Deficiency) of Revenue Over Expenses for the Year 176,567 8,443 Amortization of deferred contributions 7,130 6,554 Contributions 706,712 650,938 Donations in Kind for office premises 29,352 29,352 Donations in Kind — other 15,259 8,668 Endowment Income 35,457 33,938 Others 28,873 7,440 Programs 146, 994 124,457 Special Events 500,526 286,976 TOTAL 1,470,303 1,148,323 Accounting and audit 18,175 9,400 Amortization 13,098 13,435 Facilities 45,484 50,810 Interest on lease obligation 1,353 (768) National fees 32,681 23,997 Office 31,771 27,187 Programs 197,023 229,399 Salaries and benefits 623,153 562,817 Special Events 316,239 209,068 Staff development 14,759 14,535 TOTAL 1,293,736 1,139,880 2006 2005 This summarized statement of operations is derived from the audited financial statements of Junior Achievement of British Columbia prepared by Deloitte and Touche LLP for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2006.
