We conducted ethnographic research with 10 young women who are avid online clothing shoppers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing.

The fashion industry as we know it today is run by many different actors: models, celebrities, designers, art directors, fashion journalists but also by an increasing number of fashion bloggers. Fashion blogs’ influence is the most striking phenomenon of our era regarding the fashion industry. And this is actually visible when we examine brands marketing budget, since in average, 42% of their advertising budget is dedicated to social networks. Moreover, this year, brands are increasing their influencer marketing budget of 59%.
So how come, what is at the beginning a hobby, was able to turn the fashion industry and its strong hierarchy and standards upside down? How come a 27 years old fashion bloggers has become able to gain almost as many followers as Barack Obama and actually earns sixteen times his income?
To what extent is the new thriving business of fashion blog reshaping the fashion industry as well as its socio cultural environment?
In today's fast-paced world, fashion has become an integral part of our lives. It is a form of self-expression that allows individuals to showcase their unique style and personality.
Fashion blogging has emerged as a transformative force in the world of fashion, reshaping trends, empowering individual style, and redefining the industry’s dynamics. What began as a simple platform for fashion enthusiasts to share their style inspirations and outfit ideas has evolved into a global movement, with fashion bloggers becoming influential figures with substantial impact on the fashion ecosystem.
When it comes to fashion, visuals are key. It’s no wonder, then, that many lovers of style turn to Instagram and fashion blogs to get their fill of all things fashion.
Instagram is great when it comes to OOTDs—outfit of the day—and quick style inspirations, but blogs are where the serious fashionistas go to write about trends, advice, and the latest fashion innovations.
