YouTube Ada Chavez
My Research I wanted to see what YouTube started out as Is it the same website now that it was intended to be What is the controversy that surrounds YouTube? How did devoted YouTube users feel when the site was bought out by Google
The Men Behind the Site Originally there were three men that founded YouTube in 2005 However, there are only two men that are considered the real founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley Steven and Chad met while they were working together at PayPal.
The Original Idea The original idea for YouTube was not to have millions of categories of movies, music videos, and home videos Steve and Chad had wanted to make a video version of the concept of HotorNot.com However, when the site appeared in 2005, Steve and Chad realized that viewers were beginning to post whatever they wanted It was in when an digital short from Saturday Night Live called “Lazy Sunday” appeared on the site that the site exploded with viewers increasing 83% http://www.zippyvideos.com/3356796754673446/lazysunday/
Appeal? Easily navigated FREE and no downloading or registering required Easy steps to view the video of your choice Just type in a keyword and press Enter The freedom of posting
Appeal Cont… You do not have to watch an advertisements before viewing the selection of your choice In fact, Steve and Chad have actually refused making their viewers watch advertisements, even though it might make their lives a little bit easier “ You can watch videos on the site without downloading any software or even registering. YouTube is to video browsing what a Wal-Mart Supercenter is to shopping: everything is there, and all you have to do is walk in the door” –TIME Magazine
Hollywood Dilemma The controversy with YouTube actually stems from the fact that you are able to watch almost ANYTHING you want to When scenes from the movie 8 Mile started showing up on the site without permission form Universal Pictures, Hollywood Executives started getting involved However, even though companies such as Universal Pictures have people watching the site for any material that is unauthorized, there is not a lot they can do As fast as something taken down, another user can just as easily post the same thing
Upside to the Controversy Even though Hollywood Exec’s could potentially sue YouTube, they see the mass exposure the site has A lot of companies are trying to deal out licensing agreements with YouTube so that the postings on the sites can be done legally This is causing Hollywood to work with the site and not against it
Google In 2006, YouTube was bought out by Google for $1.65 billion dollars
YouTube Users Reaction to Google Buy Out Users think that Google just sees the profit that YouTube can bring them Disappointed Users think that the buy out will change the vision of YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhbIVIecnUc&feature=related
The Actual Upside to Google buying out YouTube YouTube was beginning to be compared to the old website Napster The press were saying that like Napster, YouTube would eventually get sued into “oblivion” Napster started out as free as YouTube, but violated too many copyright laws No instead of companies trying to end YouTube, they are partnering up with it instead
My Views The Google buy out actually did save YouTube from becoming another “Napster of the Internet” I can see how people of the YouTube community are angry, but they should really realize that YouTube could have been taken down by Universal Pictures However, Universal Pictures has decided on a truce with YouTube
My Views I think YouTube is still puts it viewing community first It is completely free and has stuck to it’s promise of not making users view advertisements before seeing their chosen video Even though it was bought out by Google, I think Steve and Chad still have only the best of intentions in mind
