In this keynote address, Phil presented four "buzzwords": containers, cloud, microservices, and open source and compared those technology areas against three main needs--speed, security, and efficiency--which seem to be common among enterprises today. Phil gives real world examples from IBM Cloud customers as well as detailing IBM's own transformation to a cloud native, container first approach to our own service delivery.

He also demonstrated deployment of a CI/CD pipeline using container management, as well as showed how to deploy a containerized application using Github, Travis, Kontena, CoreOS and DigitalOcean with a continuous delivery pipeline.
Attendees learned how the deployment process can be automated and significantly sped up by using containers and modern CI/CD pipeline tools. Through the demo example, the attendees will see an example of how this is built and run using the mentioned CI/CD solutions. This showed them how a continuous delivery pipeline will help streamline their processes and make deployments more agile.
Fig for Local Development
Fig is a tool that allows developers to easily create isolated development environments using Docker containers. It manages multiple related containers through a single configuration file, making it simple to start complex application stacks locally. With Fig, developers can define their applications and dependencies in Dockerfiles, combine them in a fig.yml configuration file, and then use Fig to build, start, and manage the entire stack with a single command. This improves the development workflow by making it faster and more consistent to test applications across different environments.
DockerCon EU 2015: Continuous Integration with Jenkins, Docker and Compose

Oxford University Press (OUP) recently started the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) initiative (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/oxfordlanguages) which aims at providing language resources for digitally under represented languages. In August 2015 OUP launched two African languages websites for Zulu (http://zu.oxforddictionaries.com) and Northern Sotho (http://nso.oxforddictionaries.com). The backend of these websites is based on an API retrieving data in RDF from a triple store and delivering data to the frontend in JSON-LD.
The entire micro-service infrastructure for development, staging, and production runs on Docker containers in Amazon EC2 instances. In particular, we use Jenkins to rebuild the Docker image for the API based on a Python Flask application and Docker Compose to orchestrate the containers. A typical CI workflow is as follows:
- a developer commits code to the codebase
- Jenkins triggers a job to run unit tests
- if the unit tests are successful, the Docker image of the Python Flask application is rebuilt and the container is restarted via Docker Compose
- if the unit tests or the Docker build failed, the monitor view shows the Jenkins jobs in red and displays the name of the possible culprit who broke the build.

Orchestrating Docker - Making the Whale Dance
Docker hit the developer scene in a big way last year. It made it easy for developers to run their applications locally and easily share and deploy them. But it wasn't quite ready for prime-time. It wasn't easy to run n-tier applications locally, manage Docker across different geographical locations or cluster Docker for availability and performance.
Recent releases of Docker have introduced new capabilities and tools to help with these use cases. In this session we're going to look at these new capabilities including:

* Introduce Docker Swarm which provides orchestration and clustering for Docker servers.

The Great Kubernetes Rebase
The Deis project, an open source PaaS platform, recently announced in our public roadmap meeting that we are transitioning our entire platform onto Kubernetes. We call it the Great Kubernetes Rebase. Amplifying Docker - Alex Heneveld
In this talk we look at the challenges of taking docker and using it as the basis for a cloud platform. We highlight the work done by one of our own Cloudsoft engineers Andrea Turli who has contributed an Apache jclouds provider for Docker and integrated this with the open source project Brooklyn.
Andrea has written about this in a recent blog post AMP for Docker and so using this as a starting point we show how we are building on this to create a lightweight dynamic Docker cloud and compare and contrast this with work we are doing with our latest partner Waratek to help them create a similar lightweight dynamic Java cloud using their Java application container technology.
Auto-scaled Concourse CI on AWS w/o BOSH

Amplifying Docker - Alex Heneveld
In this talk we look at the challenges of taking docker and using it as the basis for a cloud platform. We highlight the work done by one of our own Cloudsoft engineers Andrea Turli who has contributed an Apache jclouds provider for Docker and integrated this with the open source project Brooklyn.
Andrea has written about this in a recent blog post AMP for Docker and so using this as a starting point we show how we are building on this to create a lightweight dynamic Docker cloud and compare and contrast this with work we are doing with our latest partner Waratek to help them create a similar lightweight dynamic Java cloud using their Java application container technology.
Auto-scaled Concourse CI on AWS w/o BOSH

Ceph and OpenStack - Feb 2014
Ceph is an open-source distributed storage system that provides object, block, and file storage in a single unified platform. It has become popular for OpenStack deployments due to its ability to provide scalable storage using commodity hardware. Ceph uses a pseudo-random placement algorithm called CRUSH to distribute data and replicas across its clusters to provide fault tolerance and load balancing.

This document summarizes an engineer's experience setting up and experimenting with Netflix's Spinnaker continuous delivery tool on a local Kubernetes cluster. The engineer and their team set up Kubernetes using Docker for Mac, installed Halyard to manage Spinnaker, and deployed Spinnaker services. They took a look around the Spinnaker and Kubernetes dashboards. An attempt was made to deploy sample applications but it initially failed due to incorrect assumptions about how Spinnaker works. After reviewing documentation, they were able to deploy applications a little better but more time is needed to fully understand Spinnaker. Key learnings included the importance of documentation and that Spinnaker works in a push rather than pull model.

- Concourse is a CI/CD tool that uses pipelines defined in YAML to automate workflows. It runs builds inside containers for isolation.
- It has three main concepts: resources that define inputs/outputs, tasks that define individual build steps, and jobs that define the actions in the pipeline.
- Concourse uses a pluggable resource model so many types of resources can be used as inputs or outputs like Git, Docker images, S3, etc. It can also integrate custom resource types.
- Tasks always behave the same way if inputs are the same. Jobs determine the order of tasks and resources in the pipeline.
- Concourse is installed either locally with Vagrant or on a cluster with Bosh
Play Framework + Docker + CircleCI + AWS + EC2 Container Service

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
