By paying $35 million, Walgreens settled allegations by pharmacist-whistleblower Bernard Lisitza that it unlawfully defrauded Medicaid by switching prescriptions for ranitidine, the generic form of the brand-name drug Zantac®, and fluoxetine, the generic form of Prozac®. The United States, Puerto Rico, 42 states, and the qui tam relator claimed that Walgreens improperly caused its pharmacies to switch Medicaid patients’ prescriptions from ranitidine tablets to ranitidine capsules, and from fluoxetine capsules to fluoxetine tablets.
The alleged Medicaid fraud covered by the settlement lasted for more than four years, from July 16, 2001 through at least December 31, 2005. The complaint was brought in 2003 under the qui tam provisions of federal and state False Claims Acts, after whistleblower relator Bernard Lisitza uncovered the conduct and reported the problem to the government. The investigation and prosecution was led by the Attorneys General Offices in Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Texas and several other states, and by the United States Attorney’s Office in Chicago. Qui tam Relator Lisitza pursued the case with the assistance of his attorneys, Michael I. Behn and Linda Wyetzner, of Behn & Wyetzner, Chartered, in Chicago.

White Paper: Understanding Trust in OTC Medicines:Consumer and Healthcare Pro...Your Health at Hand
Healthcare providers and consumers agree — OTC medicines are the preferred first line of treatment to alleviate a range of symptoms. This white paper presents the findings and conclusions of the most important factors that drive trust for consumers and healthcare providers in OTC medicines.
The importance of OTC medicines to ensuring a robust self-care environment for individuals and families to effectively manage their day-to-day health, as well as safe and reliable treatments for healthcare providers to recommend to their patients, will only continue as the demand for access to trusted and affordable healthcare options grows.
Nieslen and IMS research findings from the new survey Understanding Trust in Over-the-Counter Medicines: Consumer and Healthcare Provider Perspectives.
Cost-Savings Study: Analysis of Health Management OptionsYour Health at Hand
The cost of healthcare in America is staggering. Healthcare expenditures in the United States (U.S.) surpassed $2.3 trillion in 2008, more than three times the $714 billion spent in 1990. Greater use of safe and effective over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, those available without a prescription, could help Americans cut healthcare costs while meeting their everyday healthcare needs.
This report examines the role of OTC medicines in the U.S. health care system as reflected through professional treatment guidelines, medication use data, as well as clinical and consumer research.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!
