2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. Why are we here?
• A little bit of Career Education • A lot of Course Selection Advice
3. A little Career Education…
To create a journey for your future that is exciting and fulfilling you will
need to –
Know how you are ‘wired’.
Know about the opportunities that are out there.
Have a growth mindset.
4. How are you ‘wired’?
• Get to know you.
• Do Character writing exercises.
• Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses.
5. How do you learn about the opportunities
that are out there?
Research

www.vtac.edu.au
www.myfuture.edu.au
www.joboutllook.gov.au
www.wirl.com.au
And……. Open Days.
9. Don’t need any of this as you want to leave
school?
YES YOU DO
1. You need to cover all of your bases. Submitting a course for next year that you would
enjoy/like is much better than leaving it until the last minute and ending up with
subjects you will not connect with! Assume you are here, go through the process and
any change contrary to that can be dealt with as the year progresses.
2. There are great futures for people in trades/apprenticeships but the majority of
employers are requesting a Year 12 education level, drivers licence and a pre-
apprenticeship. Set yourself up with a great VCE by including a VCE VET subject in your
course.
3. Education = better employment security and stronger financial prospects in regards to
earning potential. This is evidenced by statistics everywhere, not just old people telling
you stories!
10. VCE
• Year 11 – Must Choose Six
Subjects – one of those must be
English
• Year 12 – Must Choose Five
Subjects – one of those must be
English
Do you know … What a Unit is? The difference between Unit One and
Unit Two and Unit Three and Unit Four? What a SAC or SAT is? Who
assesses your work when in VCE?
11. The Subject Choices
VCE
- Provides a study score.
- Assessed via a variety of methods including exams.
VCE/VET
- Provides a study score or block credit
- Assessed via a variety of methods, sometimes exams, more hands on
– what can you ‘do’?
12. Year 11 with a Unit 3 and 4 subject included.
• Benefits of this inclusion include –
- A bonus to your end of Year 12 ATAR score.
- A chance to experience a Year 12 subject and form habits for future
study.
Major NOTE…. Applications for Accelerated (Unit 3 and Unit 4 subject
in Year 11) Subject in your Year 11 course must be submitted by 9am
this Friday, July 20.
18. What is a Study
Score?
• Each Unit 3 and 4 VCE subject and
many VCE VET subjects award a
student with ‘satisfactory
completion’ once all work tasks are
successfully completed in a timely
manner, and, a ‘study score’ is
awarded to rate the student’s
performance.
• The ‘study score’ is a score out of
50.
• The ‘study scores’ of a student’s
Unit 3 and 4 English and their other
subjects are combined to create an
ATAR.
19. Who gets a Study Score?
• Any student who successfully completes the Unit Three and Four
sequence of a VCE subject and who undertakes assessment that is
‘scored’.
• Unit One and Unit Two (typically Year 11 subjects) do not get awarded
with a ‘study score’… they contribute to the successful completion of
the VCE.
20. VCE/VET
• Simply choose a VCE Program with Five VCE subjects and select a VET
Subject for the Sixth.
• VET is a more ‘hands on’, vocationally orientated program that
generally runs over two years. Refer to the Senior School Curriculum
Guide and the FHS VETis Guide for details. Students must submit
their Expression of Interest to study a VET subject at the time of their
Individual Course Confirmation Appointment.
21. What is ‘block credit’?
• Some VET subjects do not receive a ‘study score’, rather, the student
is awarded a score equal to 10% of the average of the top 4 study
scores they have received.
• Block credit is a fair and significant contribution to an ATAR score.
23. What is a prerequisite?
Some University courses require that you complete specific subjects
in Years 11 and 12 to be eligible to apply. These are called
prerequisites.
24. VICTER 2021
• Can be found via link on fhscareers.com
website – Year 10 to Year 11 Course
Information tab.
• Shall be placed on Compass for students
and parents once released. The 2020 copy
is currently the best option for checking
for prerequisites.
• Herald/Sun lift out.
• VTAC website – available under
‘publications’ tab found at bottom of page.

26. What is wrong with this scenario?
Benjamin is in Year 11 studying the following subjects…
Units 1 and 2, English
Units 1 and 2, General Mathematics
Units 1 and 2, Mathematical Methods
Unit 1 and 2, Biology
Units 3 and 4, History
Units 1 and 2, VET Furniture
At this stage Benjamin’s idea is to go on to a future in Chemical
Engineering. He likes the idea of creating new potions for the fuel industry
to create clean and sustainable options for the planet.
28. Start thinking about what really interests
you.
1. Make a list of the subjects that you love. (In fact,
make a list of everything you love to do).
2. Highlight the things on that list that you are really
good at and would like to do more of.
3. Find out what kind of jobs will let you do those
things.
4. Find out which university courses will help you
develop skills in those areas.
30. Where to start with Career Research –
fhscareers.com
1. The Calendar will keep you up to date. Register for
the calendar to send events to your email. Refer to
the Calendar regularly to ensure you are proactive
in career research.
2. Weekly FHS Careers Newsletters. These distributed
via Compass. They help keep you informed of the
“opportunities” that arise for students to participate
in career development activities.

32.
33. fhscareers.com – Your Career Plan
• This is a compulsory task that must be completed in Year 10, 11 and
12.
• Follow the instructions that have been included in your Transition
Information Pack.
NO CAREER PLAN = NO COURSE SELECTION
34.
35. The Accelerated Subject Application
Process.
1. All students that wish to study a Unit 3 and 4 subject sequence in Year 11 MUST apply via
submission of the correct form by 9am, Friday July 20.
2. Application forms are to be deposited at the Senior Campus Office prior to 9am on Friday.
3. Applications forms can be found in your Transition Information Pack, and on the fhscareers.com
website.
4. Students currently studying a Unit 1 and Unit 2 sequence of a subject must also submit an
application to continue the study of this subject as their continuance in this subject is not
automatic.
5. Students who have not studied a Unit 1 and Unit 2 sequence in Year 10 should feel free to
submit an application to ‘accelerate’ and are strongly encouraged to do so if they feel they are
ready.
6. Please ensure all teacher signatures are gathered on these forms. Omission of any details or
failure to make the deadline puts your application out of contention.
7. Submission of mid-year reports is not required as dates for report distribution have not aligned
with the Accelerated subject form submission date.
36. Don’t know what to study?
Don’t worry if you don’t know what you want
to study yet. Remember that university
education or your future training for a career is
not only about subjects, apprenticeships and
degrees – its about developing your skills and
strengths as an individual. You may have more
than one career in your life, so your best
chance of a successful and rewarding career
begins with learning how to ask questions and
look for answers in areas you personally find
interesting and exciting.
37. How NOT to select your course…
Do not choose subjects in terms of scaling. There is no advantage in
this. Let your subject choices be guided by your skills and interests,
rather than scaling.
38. Where to from here?
1. Be sure to book your Course Counselling appointment online. A
Parent/Guardian must be present at this appointment. Appointments will be
held in the Senior Resource Centre. It is expected that your decisions are made
prior to attending this appointment and your counsellor is confirming your
choice against your career plan.
2. Attend the Year 10 Parent Information Evening and Subject Expo Wednesday
evening. You really need to maximize the opportunity to speak to Teachers at
this event to learn more about the subjects on offer!
3. Submit your Accelerated subject form by Friday July 20, 9am.
4. Conduct as much research as you can, remembering to check the VICTER for
prerequisites.
5. Complete your online Career Plan and VCE template as per instructions in your
information booklet.

40. The organised student vs the disorganised
student
• Considers all options
• Discusses with Teachers and
Parents
• Thinks about personal likes and
dislikes
• Explores opportunities
• Apsires/Dreams
• Works hard
• Commits now to quality career
research
• Follows instructions and meets all
deadlines
• Does not care too much
• Chooses subjects that friends are
choosing
• Ignores advice
• Believes in the myths surrounding
scaling
• Fails to dedicate thought to self,
personal likes, personal dislikes,
strengths and weaknesses.
• Does no or little research into
career options and prerequisites.
41. Student Task
From the list of subjects provided, select a Year 11 course for 2019.
Upon conclusion of this task, turn to the person beside you and explain
to them the reason why each of these subjects was selected (ie. Justify
your choices).
And while you do that… I shall play one of my favourites with a very
important message…
