Do You Know Why Achieving Work/Life Balance is so Hard? We Do! [Survey Results]
Being active, engaged and successful is not an easy task. From the moment we open our eyes, until we fall asleep exhausted at night, we seem to confront a never-ending list of urgent tasks: taking out the trash, preparing lunch for our family, rushing to business meetings, checking our email on the fly.
And even when we should be relaxing, we are not. As true representatives of multitasking society we are watching a movie and thinking about what we have left unfinished at work; getting our nails done and nervously tapping our feet, in a constant hurry by default. Ironically, it’s precisely this downtime – most often called ME time – that helps us recharge and face all our responsibilities.
As .ME crew is made of experienced professionals who know all about the challenges of achieving work/life balance, we came to an idea of starting a ME Day movement – a day when we will make time to celebrate our achievements, embrace our uniqueness and put ourselves first. With that in mind, we conducted an informal ME Day Survey that included 753 respondents from the USA. We wanted to see how much time people devote to themselves, to ensure their physical, mental and spiritual well-being!

Becoming aware of and learning to manage our emotions can be one of the most rewarding practices we ever learn. Our emotions drive us; they inspire us, or sometimes they pull us down until we feel like we cannot get up. As this happens, it impacts others around us too.
This is true for all of us and it is also the reason why emotional knowledge and skills are imperative in the business environment. Emotions are inherently neither good nor bad. It’s what we do with the information and energy they produce that makes the difference.
In this presentation, you will be introduced to an integrated framework for Emotional intelligence (EQ) and discover the link between EQ and personal effectiveness in business. This information about EQ will be useful, insightful, practical and relevant to you as a woman in business.

Having been drawn to people, their behaviours and emotions, and a desire to develop individuals, Angela studied a BA Degree in Industrial Psychology at Rhodes University. Her career has included working in the distance learning environment as a Student Advisor, Recruitment Consulting, Managing teams of Recruitment Consultants, owning a Training Consultancy – Outsourced Training Solutions – and for something completely different, owning a Florist. Her interest in psychology also led her to being trained as a Life Line Counsellor and more recently completing a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Coaching Practitioner Certification Course. Her fascination with why some individuals are able to cope better with stress and fear than others led her to the work of Dr Susan Jeffers. Angela is now a Licensed Trainer for the workshop Feel the fear and do it anyway. Her 10 years management experience has given her many opportunities to not only develop individuals, but also look at the efficiencies of teams, systems and rely on tried and tested strategic frameworks to ensure that people’s strengths are aligned to a team’s mission and objectives, which are in turn aligned to the organization’s vision. "Closing" is the process of getting final agreement to your negotiation or proposal.
Timing is everthing, especially if the negotiation is related to selling or obtaining buy-in to an important project. Lizelle will shed some light on handling objections effectively and knowing when to walk away, "NO "does not always mean “It's Over”. These are all handy skills to obtain in deal closing. Find your selling personality, and practice until you know what works for you – you will be amazed at the hidden salesperson inside you!

Lizelle recently became the first woman to hold the position of Director at Caban Investments. Before joining Caban Investments, Lizelle established a business support franchise that focused on providing assistance to other entrepreneurs and business owners. The franchise, which has since merged into the Caban structure, is set up to empower women who are qualified in administration, bookkeeping and accounting skills.
“I knew I wanted to start my own business when my first child was born. I wanted the freedom to make my own timelines,” Lizelle explains. “I always enjoyed administration and organizing things. I have an extreme fondness for paperwork and back office structures. I love mapping out processes and to figure out practical ways of making things work smoothly. I worked as a very successful PA and project manager for many years and knew where my talents were! Lizelle started her business part time while still employed in 2000.
“I started moonlighting, offering my services as a part time administrator and PA, and helping people to streamline the operational side of their offices,” says Lizelle. “It soon developed into a full time job, and I started employing admin staff and also offering bookkeeping services.”
She officially became an independent entrepreneur in July 2006.

Michelle holds an IPM Diploma in Human Resources Management and has had her own HR Consulting Company.
Today, Michelle has a holistic approach and is also formally trained in Masters Reiki, Ayruveda and practises Angel Retreats and Readings whilst still writing and conducting formal training programmes for the Corporate Sector.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
