• Bearings are mechanical devices employed to
reduce friction between rotating equipment
• The current size of the global bearings
industry is USD 60 billion
• Indian bearing market is estimated at Rs 85
billion
• It constitutes less than 4% of global bearing
demand
• The Indian industry has doubled in the last
five years
• India is among the fastest growing markets
for bearings
INTRODUCTION
Sustainability in the Industry
• Increasingly bearing manufacturing companies are focusing on sustainability and
environmental care
• Environmental care focuses on the company’s responsibility to continually strive to reduce
the negative impact on the environment from its own operations and those of its suppliers
• Companies are continually taking steps which address environmental impacts at different
stages of the product life cycle, and the entire value chain of the business
Indian Bearings Market
 Import Dependent
 Fastest growing bearings market
 Unorganized bearings market
 The demand for the bearings is
derived from two key user
segments - the automotive and
industrial sectors
 The industrial market is larger than
the automobile market in value
terms

Fag Bearings India
• VRF based water cooled Air Conditioning technology in central Air
Conditioning
• Energy efficient air cooled medium pressure compressors
• LED lights in Street lights and production areas
• High flash point washing fluid in place of low flash point washing fluid to
reduce consumption
• FRP blades in cooling tower fans
• High speed centrifuge for separation of oil from industrial effluent - Trial
successful
• Air cooled compressors are being installed and water cooling technology is
replaced thus saving natural resources
Timken India
• ETHISPHERE Institute - creation, advancement and sharing of best
practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-
corruption and sustainability
• Timken is dedicated to working “Green” and it follows the listed
practices:
– Comprehensive plan to handle the rainwater that falls on the site
– Vegetated swales within parking areas to slow rainwater so it can be
absorbed into the ground
– A white roof combined with high-efficiency heating and cooling
components that save 32 percent on energy usage compared with
code-compliant buildings without green features
– Low-flow water fixtures
– Abundant natural lighting
Global Bearings Market
• The global bearings market is generally seen as the worldwide sales
of rolling bearings, comprising ball and roller bearing assemblies of
various designs, including mounted bearing units.
• The market grows around 0-1 % year on year.
• Sales through distributors maintained around 30% of world bearing
demand, of which around 25% is related to the vehicle service market
and around 75% to the industrial market.
• Europe accounts for 25% of the total world market with Germany
alone accounting for almost 10%.
• America now represents slightly more than 20% of global demand, of
which the USA, Canada and Mexico together account for about 80%.
Power Generation from
renewables
SKF
• Focus is to reduce the environmental impact of an asset during its life
cycle.
• ISO 14001 Environment Management System to reduce the carbon
footprint in their operations
• Results:
– 5% reduction in CO2 emissions
– 50% reduction in Volatile Organic Compound emissions
– 80% recycling rate of grounding swarf
– Reduction in the usage of water
– Optimizing the ‘fill rate’ of trucks
– Use of trains has led to an annual reduction in carbon emissions up to
230 tonnes
SKF GLOBAL
NSK Bearings
• Material Compliance Application - Tracks regulated substances within NSK
products and purchased products against national and global environmental
standards
• NSK’s past year’s accomplishments achieved savings of:
– 27,795 trees - equivalent to 382,851,000 sheets of newspaper
– 757,005,000 gallons of oil - enough to heat 3,752 homes for a year
– 11,445,000 gallons of water - enough to meet the daily needs of 152,600 Americans
– 39,240 gallons of gasoline - enough to drive a mid-size car 1,097,600 miles
– 6,703,500 kilowatt hours of electricity - enough to power 4,902 homes for a year
• ISO 14001 compliance certification in all of its manufacturing units
• NSK develops rolling bearing injected with world's first lubricant grease derived
from 100% food-grade ingredients.
INA- Schaeffler Group
Germany
• INA Lightweight Balancer Shaft and Rolling Bearing Assembly -
Improve engine efficiency and reduce overall fuel
consumption
• Reducing friction by up to 50% over the whole speed range
and optimizes weight distribution
• FAG wheel bearing reduces the CO2 emissions by adjusting the
weight dynamics
• The innovative new ball roller bearing results in higher load
ratings, reusability and longer service life
• Air cooled compressors are being installed and water cooling
technology is replaced thus saving natural resources
• It uses LED lights in Street lights and production areas
