2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Staffing Requirements
On-site Requirements
Additional Requirements
It is necessaryto be accompanied byauthorised personnel thatcan assistwith anything that is needed to
complete the POC. They should be fully familiar with the testing environmentand available throughoutthe
implementation ofthe POC
For a POC, any integration with existing production services is discouraged. If any componentof the POC is
to be integrated with an existing production system (e.g.DHCP server changes,Active Directory integration,
XenApp farm inclusion etc.) a legal disclaimer will need to be signed by the customer prior to the POC
engagement.
An elementofeducation will be provided during the building ofthe POC if desired which can be extremely
useful to continue the POC into production butthis is not to be confused with structured training that can be
obtained though Citrix authorised training partners which can be obtained atany time.
Valid application software and operating system licenses will be provided by the customer for the duration of
the POC.
The following points should all have been agreed, completed or provided before the Engineer be dispatched to site
All prerequisites listed in the following section are metin full
A conference call or meeting has occurred that has allowed the success criteria to be agreed
Make, model number and specification ofserver hardware and shared storage to be used
What is the workload being virtualised i.e.Windows Server 2003,XenApp and MS Office 2007,SAP R/3 or
Linux, etc
Virtual Machines,(VMs) will be built via whatprocess i.e.standard install, scripted installation,PXE
deploymentsolution,P2Vor CD Image,etc
Please note that 30-day evaluation licenses will be provided along with all XenServer skills. However any
workload specific skills such MS Exchange, SQL Server, SAP and even Citrix XenApp may need to be
provided by the CSA partner or the end-user to ensure a successful POC
Mutually agreed date set for the work to be carried out
Remote facilities to the systems thatare being worked on as well as access to the consoles ofthese
systems
Completion ofthe Citrix Systems demonstration agreement.
Failure to comply with any of these prerequisites will resultin the engineer leaving site and not returning until they are
metin full.
The POC is focused on proving the basic conceptof a XenServer system.Anything further may involve further
consultancyand is likely to be chargeable. A full working day starting is normallydeemed to be sufficienttime for the
POC, however if Platinum Edition is being evaluated as partof the POC a second daymay be required. Any
additional time required maybe chargeable.
10. Page 10 of 18
Supportof the POC will be on a bestendeavors basis bythe engineer that installed the system plus anyother
supportarrangements setup prior to the POC.
It is in the interestof both Citrix and the customer to have a successful POC but this relies on preparation and a
mutuallyagreed time scale and desire to work together If this is possible then the POC should occur in a timely and
costeffective manner and its objectives be metin full.
