World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved many Allied and Axis powers. The war began when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and brought most countries into the war by 1942. The U.S. entered the war after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. During the war, civilian factories converted to military production, rationing was implemented, and women entered the workforce. Over 6 million Jews and others were killed in the Holocaust led by Nazi Germany. The war ended in 1945 with the surrender of Germany and Japan after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
