The City Council unanimously approved $32.75 million in settlements for two police negligence cases. A $22.5 million settlement was approved for a mentally ill woman who was released by police in a dangerous neighborhood and suffered severe injuries. The council also approved a $10.25 million settlement for a man who spent 26 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed stricter gun control ordinances to increase penalties for unregistered guns and unreported lost or stolen weapons. Ald. Debra Silverstein introduced a resolution urging bans on assault weapons which passed unanimously.
