provide livelihood facilities to many and also offer vast recreational and economic activities,
and yet, at the same time, such eco regions require to be managed with special emphasis and
consideration of its natural and cultural resources. Land cover classification of such diverse sea
land regions requires a high level of effort and plays a vital role for the analysis of time based or
event based change on certain areas. For effective utilization of remote sensed images obtained
from Earth orbiting satellites, a lot of image classification methods are available in literature. In this
paper, we use the method of unsupervised classification for the users convenience and flexibility,
low computational requirements and moderate classification accuracy. The objectives of the paper
is to classify the land cover by mapping the region into W S V (Water, Soil, Vegetation) components
using the unsupervised K means algorithm, to obtain land use/cover gray scale image combining
the W S V components and thereby finally deriving the related performance metrics such as

Historians document that the first inhabitants, the Ciboneys, arrived on the islands during what is
considered the Pre Ceramic Culture. Arawaks were the next to arrive, establishing sites on St.

The industrial revolution ended the need for the islands as a shipping port, thus changing the
economic environment. Little was heard of the islands until World War I, when the United States
realized their strategic position and negotiated the purchase of the islands from Denmark for $25
million in gold. Although the islands were purchased in 1917, it wasn t until 1927 that citizenship
was granted to Virgin Islanders. The Organic Act of 1936 allowed for the creation of a senate, and
from there the political process evolved. In 1970, the U.S. Virgin Islands elected its first governor,
Melvin H. Evans.
Tourism grew in the destination once the United States imposed an embargo on Cuba in 1959.
Today, the USVI is a thriving destination for visitors in search of the perfect vacation.

Introduction
Metals undergo natural destruction that allows a spontaneous deteriorating reaction where they
return to their original state from where they are obtained upon contact with the surrounding,
particularly when reacted to oxygen. Such phenomenon is known as corrosion (Zumdahl, 1998).
This leads the surface of the materials to rust in due time. Usually, this kind of process is
electrochemical but is sometimes accompanied by mechanical and physical stress that causes the

Metals have become one of the most in demand raw materials man has ever used. Cars, buildings,
bridges, and such a like were built through this kind of resources which contributes to the progress
and development of a community.
However, a great consequence on the economic status is incorporated in this phenomenon. Since
metals undergo corrosion that may result to its inefficiency and inadequateness, billions of dollars
are spent just to prevent its occurrence.
