Energy Plantation Projects India Ltd is establishing biomass plantations and power stations to generate cheap electricity. The company is piloting a 500 acre plantation project in Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu that will produce biomass fuel from fast-growing trees for its power stations. While the initial focus was generating electricity, the company found the same model could benefit tea factories by providing a renewable source of heat energy. Captive biomass plantations near tea factories offer many advantages, including a secure fuel source, reduced costs, improved quality and consistency of fuel, and decreased transportation costs and logistics challenges. The company has identified suitable tree species for the plantations based on growth rate, calorific value, coppicing ability
