Psychometric Evaluation Of A New Measure Of Dispositional...
Psychometric Evaluation of a New Measure of Dispositional Optimism Dispositional optimism
(DO) is a psychological construct defined as the tendency to have positive expectations about the
future (Carver Scheier, 2014). DO is considered a relatively stable trait, and is based upon the
expectancy value theory of motivation. The theory suggests that an individual s confidence in their
ability to succeed (expectancy) and the predicted benefits of completing a task (value) determine
the strength of their motivation. A person with a high score of DO (an optimist) is likely to exert
effort when tackling a challenging task as they tend to be more confident when assessing their
ability to complete a valued goal. The confidence in their abilities... Show more content on

Studies have also found links between DO and higher levels of psychological well being (Chang,
1998), higher self esteem (Weber, Puskar, Ren, 2010), and lower levels of stress and anger (Huan,
Yeo, Ang, Chong, 2006). In consideration of the importance of understanding and predicting
physical and psychological health behaviours, reliable methods of testing DO are of significant
value.
Sharpe, Martin, and Roth (2011) performed an experiment analysing the relationship between DO,
using the LOT test (Scheier, Carver, Bridges, 1994), and personality traits, using the Big Five
Factor Markers (Goldberg, 1992). Their results showed significant positive correlations between DO
and Extraversion, Agreeableness, Openness and Conscientiousness, and significant negative
correlations between DO and Neuroticism. The strongest predictors of DO were scores of
Neuroticism and Extraversion. Openness was the weakest predictor of DO. The results of the study
demonstrated the predictive relationship between personality traits and DO.
The purpose of this study is to develop and assess the reliability and validity of a new self report
measure of DO. In order to achieve this, participants will be required to complete an online
survey comprised of an existing psychometric measure of DO (the Life Orientation Test Revised
(LOT R); Scheier, Carver, Bridges, 1994), an established measure of personality traits (Big Five
Factor Markers; Goldberg,

Essay on Nihilism in Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons
Nihilism in Turgenev s Fathers and Sons has several characters that hold strong views of the world.
For example, Pavel believes that Russia needs structure from such things as institution, religion, and
class hierarchy. On the other hand, Madame Odintzov views the world as simple so long as she
keeps it systematic and free from interference.
This commentary will focus on perhaps the most interesting and complex character in Fathers and
Sons: Bazarov.
Vladimir Nabakov writes that Turgenev takes his creature [B] out of a self imposed pattern and
places him in the normal world of chance. By examining Bazarov I will attempt to make sense of
this statement. Using nihilism as a starting point I am going look at Bazarov s views and ... Show

Everyone ought to educate himself (105).
Since the indoctrination of established society begins with education, a nihilist should view
education from behind the barrel of a shotgun.
Logic is of no use Bazarov,
You don t need logic, I suppose, to put a piece of bread in your mouth (123).
The nihilist agenda, that is, the need for the destruction of structure is beyond logic and is as
necessary as eating or breathing. In addition Bazarov believes that what is preached by politicians
and so called leaders is itself without logic.
Aristocraticism, liberalism, progress, principles think of it, what a lot of foreign words ... and
useless words! (123).
It is easy for Bazarov to give no credence and thus negate the things which government deems
important in society. He sees irrelevance in much of what is said and done by leaders and Bazarov
believes that real issues are being avoided.
We saw that our clever men, our so called progressives and reformers never accomplished
anything, that we were concerning ourselves with a lot of nonsense, discussing art, unconscious
creative work, parliamentarianism, the bar, and the devil knows what, while all the time the real
question was getting daily bread to eat ... when our industrial enterprises come to grief solely for
want of honest man at the top (126).
Bazarov s nihilistic nature is a product of the corruption he sees in the nation. Bazarov could
choose to live his life and pretend not

High School Life Analysis
Four years ago, we, the students of the class of twenty seventeen, began our journey a journey
filled with ups and downs; a journey filled with positive and negative emotions; a journey filled
with success and failure. It seems like it was just yesterday that we began this difficult yet
rewarding journey through high school. I remember the days when we were all freshmen, and we
could not wait for this moment to come. We were impatient continuously counting down the days,
weeks, semesters, and years until we would graduate.
Now, this day has finally come, but are we satisfied with the success that we have created for
ourselves? Personally, I believe that the things that we have accomplished in the past four years are
phenomenal. No challenge was left alone without giving it a ... Show more content on

And last but not least, to our friends that we have made. Thanks for being supportive at both the
best of times and the worst of times. You actually made schoolsomewhat tolerable, and you helped
keep my sanity. Without you, life would be boring, so I thank you for making it enjoyable.
As you can see, many people have played major roles in our journey to success. These great
people have helped by opening up many opportunities, and by taking these opportunities, we can
make the world a better place for future generations. If we can accomplish this, which I believe we
can, we will show the greatest gratitude of all time.
By graduating from Warren High today, we are one step closer to making our wildest dreams

Life of Pi by Yann Martel Essay
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, first published in 2002, is the story of Piscine Molitor Patel. Piscine,
later shortened by himself to Pi, is the main character, the protagonist, and throughout most of this
novel just a teenager. At the beginning of the story the reader is taken to the world of
Pondicherry, India and to the Pondicherry Zoo run by the Patel Family. The Patel family consists
of Pi s mom, Gita, his dad Santosh and his older brother Ravi. As Pi grows up he takes you
through his good and bad times, he takes you through the four religions. Yes, four! He submerges in

book is called Benito Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico. This part is a manuscript from two
workers from the Japanese Ministry of Transport, who found out that Pi finally landed. They
came to find out exactly why the ship sank. Pi doesn t know for sure why it sank, but he tells the
his story. They don t believe that he survived all that time with a Bengal tiger. So he tells them

Taking a Look at Medieval Tournaments
In the 17th century, medieval tournaments became unpopular because of the invention of guns and
crossbows. Tournaments are usually competitions in a sport and the winner is rewarded with a
prize. There were many types of tournaments that knights could compete and or participate in
during the Middle Ages. In tournaments, you could gain prizes, reputation, and respect. There were
many things that could change the outcome of tournaments depending on what type of lances you
used or the armor. The tournaments served as a symbol for lives of knights in the Middle Ages. This
is shown in these three ways: chivalry, their daily life, and types of battles they participated in.
Chivalry was the code that knights practiced daily. This code knights lived by, consisted of
religious, moral, and social protocols. The religious protocol is exemplified by always keeping
faith in themselves and their peers. Another way that religion was exemplified by their code,
was to worship God and keep his church in check, and to not sin. They were also required to
always hold forth the truth. Some ways that exemplified their morality, were by living for fame
and glory. Knights had the obligation to be social, to respect their elders and to take orders from
those who had more power than they did as a knight. The knight would take on the challenges of
bravely fighting to defend their lords. There were many things made at tournaments, one of which
was respect and reputation. Being respected as a

Comparative Value Of Survival Processing
The brain is a complex system, and humans are constantly exposed to different things and
experiences that need to be retained. But how does it choose which memories to retain and how
does it retain in the first place?
Adaptive Memory: The Comparative Value of Survival Processing (Nairne, Pandeirada, Thompson)
The human brain is often biased towards different subjects. The limbic system is the beginning of
the memorization process, and it allows for both memorization and learning. (Cretu, Simona
Mariana, 2013) The first experiment was used to observe survival based processing by putting
test subjects through 5 different scenarios. (Nairne, J. S., Pandeirada, J. S., Thompson, S. R.,
2008) The human mind often retain things regarding survival. When put into a survival based
scenario, things such as food objects and objects needed to survive were much more retainable
then personal experiences and pleasantness. The survival scenario was where one must survive
in a stranded grassland in a foreign land. The test subjects were given a list of words, and was
asked to rate the words by relevancy to the situation on a scale of 1(totally irrelevant) to
5(extremely relevant). The second task was to rate the pleasantness of each word based on the
scale of 1 (totally unpleasant) to 5 (extremely pleasant). The third task focused on imagery. The
test subject was asked to rate a list of words based on the difficulty of recalling mental images on a
scale of 1(low imagery) to 5 (high

My Brother s Life
I couldn t believe it when the tomato red rental car pulled into our gravel driveway. He s here, I
shouted, racing outside to welcome my nephew who had driven across the country to visit us.
After greeting him with hugs, we watched as Evan s eyes took in our cabin, nestled in the woods.
So this is White Pines, he said. At that moment I wished I could crawl inside Evan s head and see
what his first impressions were.
If I were a betting woman, I d bet my life that curiosity had forced my nephew into visiting. We d
invited my brother s family for a visit several times over the years, but they had never come.
Eventually our families had grown up. But as my sons and their cousins stayed in touch, their
cousins seemed curious about the kind of lifestyle we led snuggled in the mountains. I believe Evan
finally had to check it out for himself before life s obligations made it impossible.
Not only had my children and their cousins grown up on different sides of the country, but world s
apart when it came to lifestyles. My brother led a traditional life, which offered a beautiful home,
the latest clothing styles, and security; while our family had chosen a meager lifestyle, unlike
anything my brother s kids could imagine.
And while two of our kids had left the nest and blessed us with grandchildren, we felt honored that
two of our adult children shared our home. They worked and slept in the attic, while my husband

Security to Stop Computer and Internet Crimes
Introduction
The computer and the Internet are important tools used by many people all around the world.
Usually the computer and internet are used for information. In today s society it is being used
for unlawful activities. It is being used to distribute child pornography, money laundering, credit
card fraud; identify theft, and all other types of crimes. Hackers are people who use their computer
skills to harm society. They are responsible for a great deal of these crimes. Information gathered by
hackers are available to anyone with the right type of computer skills. The less security you have on
your information has helped hackers gain access to information and destroyed people s lives,
corporations, and businesses. In this essay I plan to discuss security to stop computer and internet
crime, protecting your computer, and what security methods that have been put into place to prevent
computer crime. I will look into the following areas: What is computer crime? What are the different
types of computer crime? What to do to prevent hacking and protect computers?
Computer Crime
Computer crimes are on the rise 1 in 10 Americans have had to experience some form of attack
on their computer system. If you are connected to the internet in any shape, form, or fashion

Enable Others To Act (FFA)
Enable Others to Act
I remembered when I first joined the FFA, I felt a little out of place. I recall attending my first
National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. During that convention, I walked around that
convention center and realized that a huge percentage of the attendees looked the same; except me.
By saying that, almost everyone at the convention was white.
I am a full blooded Native American of the Lumbee Tribe. Like majority of the natives in my tribe,
my skin is dark. Looking around in that convention center and seeing all those white faces at the
time didn t bother me until I traveled further along in my FFA career.
During my first year as a chapter officer, I remember it was the beginning of the new academic
year and it time to recruit new members. I attended a very racially divers high school in Robeson
County, North Carolina. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could not understand why someone could assume that and I held an officer position at a chapter
and federation level.
After that comment was made, I began to ask non white students in my high school that were not
members of the FFA why would you not join our FFA Chapter. Some of the answers were that
they were not interested in agriculture. Most of the answers given were stereotypes of this
organization. Some students said the the FFA was for rednecks, farmers, and country folk. Others
said that it was for white people.
The National FFA Organization has given me so many opportunities and I didn t want silly
stereotype hinder every student to take advantage of it. I shared my story with students about
how I am a member of color and how the FFA changed my life. I told them that it doesn t matter
if you are White, Black, Latino, or Pock o dotted. It doesn t matter if you were raise on a farm in

Comparing Sexuality In Dracula And Blacula, By Bram Stoker
Sexuality in Dracula and Blacula The story of Nosferatu has its origins in the novel, Dracula,
written by Bram Stoker in 1897. The historic story of Johnathan Harker, an innocent lawyer from
England, who was lured to Dracula s Castle to help the Count purchase land in London. Johnathan
is nearly infected by three women vampires but escapes with his life. This scene reveals the
Victorian Society s ideas about Sexuality, which is a prevalent theme in Dracula. Count Draculahas
been adapted numerous times over its 121 year life. Blacula is a horror movie which was released
during the momentum of the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1970 s. The movie features

The Civil Rights Movement made progress, but racial discrimination was still apparent. Blacula s
target audience were the African Americans who were impacted by racial discrimination in the
early 1970 s. The effects of this discrimination can be seen from the beginning of the film.
Maumuwalde is dressed in a European suit. While his wife Luva s face paintings, basic jewelry,
and traditional tribal attire demonstrate that Maumuwalde, an African Prince, has been westernized.
Maumuwalde brings his wife with him when he goes to ask Dracula to help him abolish slavery.
Instead of agreeing to help them, he states that his beautiful wife Luva would be a welcome
addition to his house slaves. Dracula is a white man in the film, and his actions are symbolic of
racial discrimination still experienced by African Americans. Dracula completely belittles
Maumuwalde s masculinity. Bram Stoker s Dracula does not have a racial conflict because it was
written with all European characters. However, the theme of repressed masculinity is seen in both
works. In Bram Stoker s Dracula, Count Dracula claims Johnathan as his sexual property. Dracula
reduces Johnathan s male identity to nothing. Luva and Johnathan are viewed as property by
Dracula. This proves that, in 1972, African Americans still experienced discrimination after the start
of the Civil Rights

How Does Amanda Wingfield Present A Picture Of A...
The Glass Menagerie is a dramatic play which was written by Tennessee Williams that depicts a
picture of a dysfunctional family. These characters are Amanda Wingfield, the mother of Tom and
Laura, and Jim O Connor, the gentleman caller and a friend of Tom. In this play, Amanda
Wingfield was abandoned by her husband, who happens to leave her and the family. At this point,
Amanda s responsibility was to take care of the family and also see to it that her high expectations
for her children was fulfilled. This play brings out some issues of life especially marriage, which
affected the life of Laura and her mother. For this reason, Amanda had to find someone with
certain qualities to marry her daughter. Some of these qualities were a man who does not drink, a
man with a better job or pursuing a good career, and a man with good character.

Lay le Freine explores themes of patience being rewarded, of the oppressed turning out to be
noble, and of identity establishment. Le Freine and her mother form a central conflict within the
moral structure of the tale that condemns envy and rewards kindness. The mother is so envious
of the birth of her neighbour s twins that she spreads a rumour that a woman only gives birth to
twins if they belong to two different men. Through this subplot, Lay le Freine includes reference
to the extensive superstition about whether or not a woman is virtuous if she gives birth to
twins. The presence of this superstition may reflect the court s strictness about reproduction
levels, particularly to do with the poor, during the medieval times during which this was written.
Pressure from the court, the church, as well as embarrassment within society could have often
lead to the abandonment of a child; such as le Freine. In her story, le Freine manages to flourish
even though she has been exposed, proving that her difficulties have not damaged, but improved
her character; And damisel Freyn, so hende of mouth, / Her semblaunt and her gentrise, / Her
lovesum eighen, her rode so bright (ll. 265, 268, 269). In this way, this story is incendiary in
nature since it ignites a feeling of confidence in the audience who would enjoy hearing about a
mistreated character like themselves, who rises from the ashes despite their limitations to prove
themselves noble, and despite having nothing to their name. As much as this story would likely
ignite feelings of hope amongst the audience, they are also able to relate to the voice of le Freine,
which is not directly spoken to them until line 379, just before the end. In acquiring a voice only

My First Daughter respectively. Although Philips and Jonson s elegies contain obvious similarities
regarding the nature of the works, the differences between the approaches taken to mourn their
children are quite contrasting. These differences may be reduced to the emotions displayed in the
elegies, which may be considered reflective of the sex of either of the poets and their religious
beliefs. The autobiographical grief shown by a mother(Katherine Philips) and... Show more content

She cannot even rely on fate; fate is now connected with mourning. Of the two poets, Philip s
moves farther away from the consoling nature that religion provides for Jonson. Philips s elegy is
raw with the emotion of a grieving mother who cannot seem to find consolation in the world. She
got a taste of what she wanted: she [saw] him and then he disappeared (Philips 5). Orinda Upon
Little Hector Philips is best illustrated as a mother s progression through her grief. It begins with
Philips being robbed of her son the first stanza, the second stanza has a sense of disbelief, in the
third stanza the pain of her son s death seems to engulf her, in the fourth stanza Philips grief is
detached from those around her, and the final stanza enforces a type of grudging acceptance that
this is the last of her unhappy...verse (Philips 20). Normally, the end of unhappy...verse (Philips 20)
would signify the return of a happy verse, but this is not what Philips is implying. She will cease to
write due to her seemingly unending unhappiness. Through this maternal perspective there is
seemingly a stronger connection between the poet and the lost child. Despite only having her son
for a short time, her maternal grief is ever present at his loss and presents her with continuous grief.
Jonson s son died at the age of seven. Because of this, he expressed a strong, personal bond

The article The National Conversation in the Wake of Littleton is Missing the Mark By Jackson
Kats and Sut Jhally is about finding the cause of violence and relating it to students who dispense
harm to society, as well as other students. There is a focus on masculinity, along with behavior and
how that behavior is being influenced by the environment. The article focuses on factors such as
peer exclusion, the prevalence of violencein the media and most importantly, violence in relation to
gender. .
In relation to gender, masculinity plays a crucial role in shaping ego and self esteem. While
answering the question how does violence relate to masculinity? it is important that we examine the

This may alter children to act violently in order to keep up with the norms they are being presented
by influential, popular celebrities.
While studying a topic which has a cause and effect relationship to societal norms, we can apply
two major theories to help understand the influences shaping our perceptions and mental
processes; the first being conflict theory. Conflict theory focuses on society as a whole. While
trying to find correlations between violence and masculinity, the role of society has a large
influence. It decides whether or not you meet societal norms and if you do not, you are seen as
unequal and less than those who do. This is demonstrated in the Columbine section of the
chapter where Katz and Jhally mention dominant male athletes did not hide their distance for
those who did not fit in. ( gender and sexuality ) This implies to us the shooters most likely acted
out by using violence because they were deemed less than the jocks and a separate social class.
In this chapter, there is also a focus on dominance, power and control. There is a relation to
conflict theory in this idea because it acknowledges the desire of privilege. As many try to increase
theirs and be viewed as equal, they may feel the

Gifted Hands Reflection
The portrayal of Dr. Ben Carson s life in Gifted Hands was truly inspirational and motivational.
Through the depiction of his life, we realize that a person can still thrive despite encountering
numerous adversaries. In the first part of the film, the audience saw a younger Ben, a kid who
was hot tempered and quite gullible, so far from who he is now. As a child, Ben was easily
influenced and pressured by his friends he succumbed to peer pressure as any adolescents would.
Those specific attributes were manifested when Ben had had enough of his classmates bullyingand
it became more evident when he became friends with a reckless and corrupt boy from his new
school. Although Ben possesses the aforementioned negative traits, we also discovered some
outstanding traits of his. Gifted Hands depicted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ben Carson was truly an exceptional and an accomplished person; however, the audience came to
know that he hasn t always been like that. Ben came from a broken family since his father broke
all contact and left him when he was still young; thus, he lived with his mother and his older
brother. Besides the fact that he comes from a broken family, he is also a man of color. At that
certain part of history, it is common to belittle and discriminate people belonging to the black
ethnicity, which makes Ben s life tougher and more arduous. In addition to the aforementioned
issues Ben faced, we learned that he was having a difficult time reading which explains his
unsatisfactory grades and a little later it was also revealed that his mother also has a learning

Benefits Of A Tariff On Goods And Services That Are Imported
A Tariff in general is a comprehensive tax on goods and services that are imported. The main
aim of a tariff is to create security to the domestic product of a nation from the imported goods
which are cheaper and have a huge production capacity. Furthermore tariffs also aid in balancing
the prices in a country. This paper describes the roles tariffs play in a country and also pros and
cons of tariffs.
There exist many different forms tariffs in which each is has its own specific operation. Some of
the most notable tariffs include the revenue tariff, prohibitive tariff and protective tariff.
The Revenue Tariff
This tariff is meant to create and accumulate huge amount of government finances. For example a
country that has little product. For it to keep the domestic income strong the government has to
install tariff on the goods which have been imported hence levying the prices. The government thus
creates a security cover for the product of certain import goods that are limited.
Prohibitive tariff
This tariff is normally used to diminish competition between the foreign and domestic producers.
Furthermore it is used to cease foreign imports present in its track. It works in a way similar to an
embargo placed on a specific given country.
Protective tariff
This type of tariff tends to inflate the prices that imported products have set thus creating a positive
price vacuum for locally based industries. Protective tariff highly taxes foreign imports hence
forcing a specific

Contributions Of Pablo Neruda
Pablo Neruda. Influence of war, communism and love on his poetry
ВЁYou can cut all the flowers, but you cannot keep spring from comingВЁ (Horden). There are
two perspectives this quote can be observed from. First, repression exerted by fascist dictators
won t keep democracy from coming. Second, even if you avoid temptations, love will make its
way through. Pablo Neruda was born in Chile but lived most of his life away from his country.
Poems in which he talks about being away from home will be constant during his life. Neruda
started writing at a very short age and continued to write until his death. He published his first text
at the age of 14. Neruda did only dedicate his life to writing, but also made politics one of his

He wrote poems with the intention of recruiting people for the communist cause or to encourage
USSR soldiers during WWII. In a Love Song to Stalingrad, he condemns the Nazi aggression to
Russia and honors the brave (Neruda) men fighting against fascism. This kind of political literature
is a reaction to the events he experienced during the Spanish Civil War and the horror caused by
right extremism ideals. His poems and speeches made his a referent of the Spanish speaking left
during the 1950 s and 1960 s. His activism and popularity among the left made him become the
Presidential Candidate of the Communist Party in Chile, a position he declined. Politics also
made Neruda, a poet, write not only poems but also articles that defended the communist ideals.
This had a great impact on his life. First, boosting his political career, but ultimately having him
killed. Neruda guided his life and actions by what he believed was the best way to help the people
live a better life.
Neruda dedicated his life to politics and poetry and wrote about love, war and communism. Pablo
Neruda was a prolific poet who covered many topics during his career and won a Nobel Prize.
During his life he wrote about love at the same time he experienced marriage or sexuality. He
also used writing as a mean to express his views and ideals and to help spread communism.
Neruda was one of the main poets of the 20th Century not only because of the quality of is works

As a British protectorate, without having to contribute tax revenue to the United Kingdom,
Guernsey enjoys the national security, political stability and the advanced financial systems offered
by the UK Crown. Figures released as recently as January 30th 2013 from Guernsey Finance state
that Guernsey remains the domicile of incorporation for more non UK entities listed on the London

Greed And Obitivity
In a society with too much greed and possessions can lead the world that is inhumane. People are
never satisfied with what they currently have, they always desire for more or better than this or
that person. Throughout history and literature, greed is a classic topic in human development
that naturally affects many of our decisions. Of Course, people would agree that increase of
possessions is a way to motivate us in order to reach a certain height of success. Greed doesn t
mean you have a sin, it s just how the world works. There is an old saying, If you want
something, work for it. Greed doesn t mean selfish, people just want to work toward their goals
and increase their status in a cruel society that is full of judgemental people. Without greediness
in our life, it would be like plain bread, without the peanut butter or the jam. One particular
person in history that is well known for his ambitious action and power hungry was Hitler. Hitler
used many of his tactics for people to vote for him motivational speech and make Germany
better, this way people can follow Hitler. Once Hitler had abundance followers, he wanted to
dictate people live and used violence against people who disobeyed his orders. Since Hitler was a

Nature And Theories In Management Accounting
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction
This chapter begins by looking at the literature that will give considerable information about
Management Accounting and the practices of Small and medium Enterprises, bringing out the
interdependence and interrelation of one to the other.
2.2 Overview of Management Accounting
Management accounting was first known as cost accounting. This origin was reflected in the earlier
title for practitioners of cost or works accountants (Wilson and Chua, 1988). Accounting historians
have long endorsed the view that cost accounting is a product of the industrial revolution (Johnson,
1981). For example (Wilson and Chua, 1993) claimed that cost accounting was practiced by the
mechanized, multi process, cotton textile factories that appeared in England and United States
around 1800. This point of view was consistent with Garner (1947) who pointed out that cost
accounting had emerged only after eighteenth century as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This change has resulted to a range of modern management accounting. This is evident through the
adoption of innovative modern management accounting techniques like Cash Flow analysis,
Activity based costing, cost volume profit Analysis, Balanced Scorecard, Standard costing among
others. This new techniques seem to be gradually adopted by Ghanaian SMEs.
Management accountant is less likely to take decision but rather provides data which is aids
management in decision making. Management accountant deals with future outcome. It helps in
planning the future because decisions are always taken for the future course of action. Many
theories have been developed to management accounting, among them which this study seeks to
address is the contingency

The Power Of The Executive Branch
As the President of the United States, we see him, or possibly in the future her, as the supreme
or ultimate power since they are the highest on the chain. For instance, just as monarchies saw
their king or queens. The power of the Executive Branch is solely invested in the President, also
assumes the position as head of state and Commander in Chief of the armed forces. Everything
you hear from the President is supposed to carry a heavy weight because it is coming from a
higher authority figure. You would think with a stroke of a feather light pen and whatever wish
the President has asked for has been granted. Not exactly. The president has powers outlined
specifically by Article II Section II of Constitution. Although it implements fewer explicit
powers to the president than it does Congress. Opposing popular belief, our president powers are
...far more limited in power than we think (Botsch). Giving these limitations are some examples

approved is the U.S. Constitution itself. Usually the result of congressional override; not only does
it limits powers of the President but Congress, as well. It comes downs to the approval of a bill, the
proposed legislation goes through congress before a decision is made. As we learned, if a President
veto s a bill, Congress is allowed to override it with 2/3 s vote. Vice versa, if congress proposes a

Caricatures Influence On African American Culture
Caricatures have influenced the way that African Americans have been viewed throughout history.
Caricatures, such as the mammy, have given a negative impression on African Americans since the
end of slavery. From a young age, children are let to believe that African Americans are inferior to
whites, producing a negative image upon African Americans. Even in todays world, caricatures still
influence the shaping that people have upon African Americans, many in the use of cartoons,
movies, or television shows. The mammy caricature was created towards the end of slavery,
through mainstream media, such as television shows and advertisements. She would have obese,

Advertising Persuasive Paper
The reality of advertising is right under our noses and in front of our eyes. Wherever we are or
whatever we are doing, the fact is we are likely to be surrounded and influenced by advertisements.
Shakespeare advertised his plays, of course, but not in the commercial sense we know today. For
more than a hundred years, though, commercial advertisements for products and services have been
vying for the attention of the consumer. Those businesses found that the bigger and bolder the
claims they made, the more people bought their products and chose them over the competition.
The fiercely competitive businesses of advertising and marketing were born. Today those

and taste. We will buy anything, it seems, to make us suave and sophisticated and the envy of all

you own rather than on your personality. Do you really need friends like that?
We are being manipulated, on every street corner and every moment of the day and it s going to
get worse. Internet advertising, once only a fraction of all advertising is set to become the
biggest business in the world. This won t just apply to pop ups or banners, it will apply to
personal advertising aimed and directed at you personally. It will be based on the mathematic

and every one will be set to appeal to you personally.

it, advertising is impossible to avoid. Marketing companies in response to so called В‘ad clutter or

Macro Environmental Factor and forces that are outside the scope of a company s economic
conditions are referred to as macro environmental. As a brand manager, an analysis of factors or

Bullying Interventions That Support Exceptional Education...
Violence has increasingly grown in our nation in the last 5 years. It has entered every facet of the
lives of youth, from social media, television, and especially in the school system. One of the
biggest problem that exist in the school system today is bullying. This type of misbehavior can
cause the school climate to be unconducive to learning. Bullyingcan also have a negative effect on
not just the regular student, but the exceptional educationstudent as well. Because of the growing
epidemic (trend) of bullying, it is a need to further research the effects that bullying has on the
special educationstudent. These facts lead to the proposed research topic, Bullying Interventions
that support exceptional education students . The following literature review will attempt to
support the proposed topic.
In the article by Rose, Swearer, Espelage (2012) the authors explained that further research should
be conducted to determine if anti bullying programs effectively impact exceptional education
students or if modifications were needed The authors also argued that bullying not only affects the
regular student, but it possibly puts the special need student at a higher risk. They are at a higher
risk due to physical elements, personal qualities, and school related issues. When students with
disabilities display age appropriate social skills and positive self concept, are academically sound,

Analysis Of Abc s Fice Essay
As a predecessor of NBC s The Office, both created by Greg Daniels and Mike Schur, Parks and
Recreation (or P R for short) had big shoes to fill. At first, the show did not impress many, and its
ratings were low. The first season seemed not to have a place, like a show trying to be something it
was not, until it found its footing. Feminismwas the missing piece of the puzzle. The show went
on to become a success even more so than The Office. So what separates the two? P R eventually
gave us something The Office never did: real world issues, served up with clever wit. The fictional
worlds most television shows take place in, are almost entirely post feminist. Unlike these sexism
free utopias, P R normalizes feminism, reminding us that it exists and is important; it is the
stepping stone we need to further conversations about inequality. While the text of P R is
consistently the most obviously empowering aspect of the show, production practices and audience
consumption are also rich with evidence of this series feminist potential. It s important that I clarify
that when I say feminism, I am talking about liberal feminism, or, white feminism. The kind of
feminism you see in P R is women having a seat at the table, or breaking the glass ceiling
feminism. The show lacks intersectional views and never touches upon racial, class or LGBT
issues. Whether or not the use of liberal feminism is problematic or not, is not what I am here to
argue. I would like to reiterate

Self Care Ethics
The research discussed in this paper has shown similar findings in the benefits of self care.
Different practices such as utilizing social support through friends and family members, using
private time to work on distancing oneself from stressors or trauma of work and placing personal
needs first at home. Now it is time to explore the validity, and generalizability of the findings
presented. Although multiple studies came to the same conclusions of ways to alleviate and
prevent burnoutand were able to identify leading causes to burnout having a control group to test
coping skills is difficult due to ethical concerns. Ethical concerns would be the repercussions of not

al. (2012) as well as Killian (2008) both discuss the importance of having a correct ratio of at risk
patients/consumers vs. lower risk. However, no discussion around what is considered a high
risk patient vs. low risk, or an amount for appropriate ratio. Benefits of knowing what was
defined during the study as a high risk patient would be helpful to know that it was general
across all participants of the study. Due to having open ended questions and having the
providers list their version of what burnout is, can alter the study by not having a preliminary set
of defined terms, and the subjectivity can mitigate the results. Participants were providers for
consumers with an eating disorder with an average of 13 years experience from different
organizations, which can help with generalizability to more than one profession on how stressors
at work can be seen in different companies. Killian s (2008) qualitative study of open ended
questions showed difficulty with inter item reliability to not having a set of terms to define the
meaning of burnout and self care, however changing those results into completing a second
quantitative study helped to support Kilian s findings correlating work stressors, as well as
personal stressors to the experience of burnout. However, due to the study being conducted within
questionnaires, and no ability to have a control study, it s difficult to be able to see if controlling
for work hours made a difference. Self report can also hinder results from participants having social
desirability with either wanting to look good to their company, the testers, or want to give the

Selfish Theme Analysis in Bartleby by Herman Melville Essay
Is the narrator of Bartleby a selfish or an unselfish man? Defend your answer with evidence from
the story. The narrator of Bartleby is not a selfish man. Instead, he was the type of man who
tried to do everything for someone who was in need. He tried his best to be there for one of his
workers when he knew he was not well. Bartleby was a man who was a great worker. He was a
man who knew what he was doing and what needed to be done from him. He was extremely
caught up with his work, as he had nothing else to do and no one to be with. The story changed
when Bartleby s attitude about everything changed. The first thing he did was he prefer not to do
what his boss asked him to do. He gave no explanation why but made it clear that he won t... Show

He was able to see that the man he hired was using his office for his own living home. For the first
time in my life a feeling of overpowering stinging melancholy seized me. Before, I had never
experienced aught but a not unpleasing sadness. (Herman Melville, page 320). the narrator is
feeling sad for Bartleby, he feels sad that the man who works for him is lonely and has no one to
be with. However, as the story keeps going Bartleby refused to do anything. When asked to do
something his simple words are, I prefer not to. the narrator did not like this and he got mad that
he decided to move his business somewhere else. He didn t want to be in charge of Bartleby
when the man would not do any work. He was proud of himself for leaving him behind without
getting angry but being able to control his anger. When again I entered my office, lo, a note
from the landlord lay upon my desk. I opened it with trembling hands. It informed me that the
writer had sent to the police, and had Bartleby remove to the Tombs as a vagrant. (Herman
Melville, page 329). everyone knew that the narrator knew more about Bartleby then they did.
They wanted the narrator to be able and do something about Bartleby. As Bartleby was in the
Tomb the narrator took time out to go and visit him. The first time he visited him Bartleby ignored
him. The narrator out of his good character went to the person who cooks for them and gave him
money so he can get Bartleby some good food. As stubborn as

apparatus people utilize either intentionally or unwittingly to serve their own particular finishes.

in her article, and additionally current world occasions, show that reality. However, many

The Modern Controversy Of Old Persian Language

within the Indo Iranian branch of the Indo European languages. It is primarily spoken in Iran,
Afghanistan (officially known as Dari Persian since 1958 for political reasons),[7] and Tajikistan

Early New Persian possessed a series of five long vowels (/iЛђ/, /uЛђ/, /Й’Лђ/, /oЛђ/ and /eЛђ/)

The Design of a Uniform Pore Structure Is Favorable to...
The isotherms of three samples investigated by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption were shown in
Figure 2. The curves of all three samples show hysteresis behavior and belong to type IV
isotherms31. It suggests that our samples exhibit mesoporous structure with pore sizes larger
than 5.6 nm (Table 2). The pore diameter of thiol functionalized SBA 15 calculated by the BJH
theory is smaller than that of SBA 15, which is attributed to the anchoring of thiol moiety to the
silanol group in the interior wall of SBA 1540. The decrease of pore size, while maintaining type
IV isotherm characteristics in thiol functionalized SBA 15, is one possible reason that thiol
moieties are located along the interior pore channels of SBA 15, not in the internal framework
of SBA 15. The further decrease of pore size in Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 can be explained
by the attachment of bismuth to the thiol group, narrowing the inner pore channel of SBA 15.
The BET surface areas of SBA 15, thiol functionalized SBA 15, and Bi thiol functionalized SBA
15 are 847, 512, and 347 m2/g, respectively. The pore volumes of those are 1.03, 0.85, and 0.62
cm3/g, respectively (shown in Table 2). The gradual decrease of the surface area and pore volume
can also be understood in the attachment of thiol group to the inner wall of SBA 15 or bismuth to
the thiol group as discussed above. Interestingly, the pore diameter of Bi SBA 15 is similar to that
of SBA 15, indicating that bismuth is not impregnated to the

The Use of Hand Hygiene Interventions and Techniques to Prevent Nosocomial Infections
Laura K. Jones
School of Nursing at Platt College
The Use of Hand Hygiene Interventions and Techniques to Prevent Nosocomial Infections
Studies have continued to prove hand hygiene to be the most effective technique for eliminating
nosocomial infections. Treatment facilities are experiencing multidrug resistant organisms at an all
time high due to a lack of proper infection prevention protocol. Nosocomial infections are the most
common complication that can arise during a hospital stay (Insert citation). A majority of
developing countries are facing multidrug resistant organisms caused by the lack of infection
prevention protocol and a large amount of pressure to provide health care in poor living and
treatment conditions. Over use of antibiotic treatment is part of the reason large numbers of
multidrug resistant organisms are appearing in the healthcare environment. Implementing more
stringent infection prevention protocol, assessing health care facilities use of proper infection
control, and critically analyzing use of antibiotics will aid in elimination of nosocomial infections
and decrease the average hospital stay.
According to the evidence based clinical practice guidelines on the guidline.gov website, there are
three standard principles of hand hygiene. The first is using a hand washing technique with
decontamination agents, such as soaps or

The Internet And Internet Stealing On The Internet
The internet may be the greatest invention in human history. It is able to connect almost all of the
seven billion people on the Earth, and allows these people to share their ideas, but it also creates an
intellectual property nightmare. The internet s main goal is the spread of information, but
sometimes the information isn t obtained in a way which agrees with laws put in place to protect
patent and copyrightholders, and trademark owners. Since the invention and mass adoption of the
internet, IP laws have been struggling to keep up and law makers have had to start thinking about
IP as it pertained to the internet and how people used it.
Websites like Pirate Bay and Megaupload allowed for millions of people to illegally obtain
copies of their favorite software, songs, games, and much more. Stealing on the internet is not a
hard thing to do, the costs of copying are not high, and people can do it anonymously. There has
been a push in the last twenty years for a more aggressive enforcement of rights and laws for new
forms of media.
In 1998 the world saw the passing of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) which was an
attempt by the US government to combat copyright to strengthen legal protection of intellectual
property rights holders in the midst of emerging new information communication technologies. The
law put pressure on internet service providers in order for service provider s legal liabilities to be
limited in the event one of their users violated copyright

Alice G. Martin s Game Of Thrones
For nearly six seasons now, Americans have sat, captivated, in front of their television screens on
Sunday evenings, while men fought to the death for a throne, for honor, women, family and
vengeance. They have watched a timid young girl become a queen. The illegitimate son of a
Northern noble house has risen through the ranks, only to be assassinated, and brought back from
the other side. Viewers have watched their favorite characters be executed, persecuted, prosecuted,
raped, assassinated, maimed, humiliated and murdered. They have yelled at their television
screens, cried for the beloved characters that have been lost, and cussed and swore they would
never watch it again. Yet, next Sunday rolls around, and there they are, planted on the couch,
nervous with anticipation over who we may lose, or who may be victorious this week.
This show that has caused viewers such anguish and intrigue is Game of Thrones, the hit HBO
series based on George RR Martin s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Game of Thrones is one of

Alice G. Walton of Forbes Magazine has some ideas about what it is that keeps viewers coming
back. Walton claims that there are the obvious hooks of swordfights, sex, nakedness and overall
intrigue. These elements combine with the fantasy aspects, such as Daenerys s dragons and
Melisandre s blood magic, to create a type of make believe escapism for viewers. This obviously is
not the same type of make believe escapism that children experience with Disney, however. Game
of Thrones runs deeper and offers more to viewers than just this escapism. It forces them to become
intimately acquainted with the characters by teaching their histories, their struggles, failures,
accomplishments, and their motivations and then it twists and shows viewers that they really have
no idea what is going on. It is this manipulation that is one of the major aspects that makes this show

Why Mexico And Not Canada
How do people feel when something completely biased is not in their favor? When people are
specifically targeted against for doing nothing wrong, is a horrible feeling. This is what happens
every day to Mexicans. Mexicans are practically hated if they try to come in our country compared
to the Canadians we enjoy having. People are shocked with the eye opening question, why Mexico
and not Canada. This is not because Mexicans are any worse but because there is a stereotype
problem. . . . This is a major problem buried in our country about the unjust discrepancy between
the acceptance of Mexican and Canadian Immigrants. . . This discrepancy is a biased view
about what immigrants can come into the U.S. It is huge problem how blatant racism in
America is (insert ). . . News stories flash about more border patrol agents going to protect our
Mexican American border are on all of the time. People receive a false feeling that Mexican
immigrants are horrible. On the other side, we hear little about our neighbor north of us. There is
no focus on them because the U.S already feels the only problem is Mexico. This places judgment
about not being as good as the Canadians. This because a problem of fairness; it is unfair.
Mexicans are blamed for the bulk of why U.S. has immigrationproblems. A study at the Migration
Policy Institute shows immigrants are 13 percent of the American population (INSERT ). Of this,
less than two percent is made up of Hispanics. I conducted my own

Generational Differences in the Classroom
Most people have a learning style that mirrors how they were taught when they were younger. It
should be noted that there is not a one size fits all method when it comes to learning. The key to
being able to appeal to each of the different generations is to offer diversity in teaching styles in
order to satisfy the different preferences. As of now, there are four generations that are in the
workforce and those four generations are: The Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and
the Millennials. This paper will examine the characteristics of these four generations, how their
learning styles differ, and what to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important for these adult students to have time to understand concepts that involve the use of
technology. The next generation to be examined is the Baby Boomers, the Baby Boomers were
born in the early 1940 s to early 1960 s. This generation occupies a lot of top executive roles in the
workforce and are not retiring as they were expected to (Levonius, 2015). The Baby Boomers were
taught to grow up questioning authority and standing up for themselves when they needed to.
Around the time this generation was in school there was a grade inflation in the educational system,
and the Boomer s strived to achieve these high grade marks. Baby Boomers were taught in a linear
fashion, they were taught by lecture, and the technology they had included overhead projectors and
some videos (Warren, 2012). Since this generation was accustomed to trying to achieve high grades
they became achievement oriented adults. Education was quite a bit different from earlier
generations in this era (Olson, 2011). There was more emphasis placed on students to finish high
school, and for the first time in history more students were attending college. From both the size
of the generation as well as their impact to society, Baby Boomers have strong sense of self and a
desire for involvement in their world, particularly at work (Olson, 2011). They have a strong work
ethic, and a desire to receive rewards

Eisenstein Beyond The Shot
Eisenstein also discusses intellectual montage as being conflict within a shot, rather than just the
juxtaposition of two shots side by side. In Beyond the Shot , Eisenstein describes two specific
sorts of conflict within a shot: the conflict between an object and its spatial nature and the conflict
between an event and its temporal nature (88). The first one is used widely throughout the film,
as well as in the casino scene. However, the second type of conflict within a shot is not used in the
casino scene. The first, described as being achieved through optical distortion (88), is exhibited in

The film uses the intellectual and overtonal montage, especially in the casino scene, to showcase
the motifs of the film and elicit a response from the viewer that allows them to create meaning

for the scene in relation to the entire film: once Lola was able to take control of her situation, she
was able to save Manni. Run Lola Run ended up being an exceptional film to compare to

Biological Weapons Should Not Be Used During War Time
Did you know that biological weapons contain such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other
microorganisms(ncwiseowl.com). Chemicals weapons is a specialized munition that uses
chemicals formulated to inflict death or harm on humans(ncwiseowl.com). When biological
weapons are in use about 500 million people could die and when chemical weapons are in use
anyone in the area could get hurt/sick(ncwiseowl.com). So the military should not use during
war time. Biological/Chemical weapons are the type of weapons that should not be used in a
time of war. When using these weapons there capable of killing most of the people that are in the

the use of the weapons because they can t control the war. The people just watch their own die

people can get involved in a war that isn t theirs. When considering the Good side of the use of
the biological/chemical weapons, you can take out massive amount of people in one go. If you
consider a group of people a threat you can kill most without losing any of you troop or soldiers.
You could use the weapo without the other side knowing that you even used the weapon. You
could also use it as a last resort to kill of the rest of the enemy or the thing you are trying to kill.

Giuliano della Rovere, aforementioned nephew of Sixtus IV...
Giuliano della Rovere, aforementioned nephew of Sixtus IV fled to France shortly after
Alexander VI s ascension to the papal throne. From there he slowly gained support on top of the
influence and wealth he already had in Rome. In 1503, he returned to the Vatican for the conclave
that followed Alexander VI s death. For the second time, his attempt at the papal seat failed when
the cardinals chose Cardinal Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, nephew of Pius II and a renowned
man of virtue as the new pontiff who then took the name of Pius III. The newly elected popedied
twenty six days later. In this conclave, Giuliano finally succeeded in gathering enough votes for his

Large areas in Romagna had fallen outside the jurisdiction of the papacy or claimed by Venice
after Alexander VI s death. In 1508, the circumstances forced Julius II to create the League of
Cambrai or more melodramatically known as the Holy League, an anti Venetian alliance between
the papacy, Louis XII, who then ruled Milan, Emperor Maximilian I, and Ferdinand II of Spain,
who was king of Naples. The league troops defeated Venice in May 1509 near Cremona, and the
Papal States were restored.
Although the League was initially successful, by 1510, King Louis XII was regarding Pope Julius II
as a greater threat than Venice. For that reason, France changed sides in the war and allied itself
with Venice. Not long after, Venice submitted to Julius II and allied itself with the papacy against
France. Following a year of fighting over the Romagna, during which the Veneto Papal alliance
was repeatedly defeated, the Pope proclaimed a Holy League against the French in October of
1511. This league rapidly grew to include England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1512, Julius II successfully drove French across the Alps, but it was at the cost of the occupation
of Northern Italy by other powers, and Julius II, though he had secured the papal authority in the
states immediately around Rome, was essentially as far as ever from realizing his dream of an

  • 2. Psychometric Evaluation Of A New Measure Of Dispositional... Psychometric Evaluation of a New Measure of Dispositional Optimism Dispositional optimism (DO) is a psychological construct defined as the tendency to have positive expectations about the future (Carver Scheier, 2014). DO is considered a relatively stable trait, and is based upon the expectancy value theory of motivation. The theory suggests that an individual s confidence in their ability to succeed (expectancy) and the predicted benefits of completing a task (value) determine the strength of their motivation. A person with a high score of DO (an optimist) is likely to exert effort when tackling a challenging task as they tend to be more confident when assessing their ability to complete a valued goal. The confidence in their abilities... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Studies have also found links between DO and higher levels of psychological well being (Chang, 1998), higher self esteem (Weber, Puskar, Ren, 2010), and lower levels of stress and anger (Huan, Yeo, Ang, Chong, 2006). In consideration of the importance of understanding and predicting physical and psychological health behaviours, reliable methods of testing DO are of significant value. Sharpe, Martin, and Roth (2011) performed an experiment analysing the relationship between DO, using the LOT test (Scheier, Carver, Bridges, 1994), and personality traits, using the Big Five Factor Markers (Goldberg, 1992). Their results showed significant positive correlations between DO and Extraversion, Agreeableness, Openness and Conscientiousness, and significant negative correlations between DO and Neuroticism. The strongest predictors of DO were scores of Neuroticism and Extraversion. Openness was the weakest predictor of DO. The results of the study demonstrated the predictive relationship between personality traits and DO. The purpose of this study is to develop and assess the reliability and validity of a new self report measure of DO. In order to achieve this, participants will be required to complete an online survey comprised of an existing psychometric measure of DO (the Life Orientation Test Revised (LOT R); Scheier, Carver, Bridges, 1994), an established measure of personality traits (Big Five Factor Markers; Goldberg, ... • 3. Essay on Nihilism in Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons Nihilism in Turgenev s Fathers and Sons has several characters that hold strong views of the world. For example, Pavel believes that Russia needs structure from such things as institution, religion, and class hierarchy. On the other hand, Madame Odintzov views the world as simple so long as she keeps it systematic and free from interference. This commentary will focus on perhaps the most interesting and complex character in Fathers and Sons: Bazarov. Vladimir Nabakov writes that Turgenev takes his creature [B] out of a self imposed pattern and places him in the normal world of chance. By examining Bazarov I will attempt to make sense of this statement. Using nihilism as a starting point I am going look at Bazarov s views and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyone ought to educate himself (105). Since the indoctrination of established society begins with education, a nihilist should view education from behind the barrel of a shotgun. Logic is of no use Bazarov, You don t need logic, I suppose, to put a piece of bread in your mouth (123). The nihilist agenda, that is, the need for the destruction of structure is beyond logic and is as necessary as eating or breathing. In addition Bazarov believes that what is preached by politicians and so called leaders is itself without logic. Aristocraticism, liberalism, progress, principles think of it, what a lot of foreign words ... and useless words! (123). It is easy for Bazarov to give no credence and thus negate the things which government deems important in society. He sees irrelevance in much of what is said and done by leaders and Bazarov believes that real issues are being avoided. We saw that our clever men, our so called progressives and reformers never accomplished anything, that we were concerning ourselves with a lot of nonsense, discussing art, unconscious creative work, parliamentarianism, the bar, and the devil knows what, while all the time the real question was getting daily bread to eat ... when our industrial enterprises come to grief solely for want of honest man at the top (126). Bazarov s nihilistic nature is a product of the corruption he sees in the nation. Bazarov could choose to live his life and pretend not

High School Life Analysis Four years ago, we, the students of the class of twenty seventeen, began our journey a journey filled with ups and downs; a journey filled with positive and negative emotions; a journey filled with success and failure. It seems like it was just yesterday that we began this difficult yet rewarding journey through high school. I remember the days when we were all freshmen, and we could not wait for this moment to come. We were impatient continuously counting down the days, weeks, semesters, and years until we would graduate. Now, this day has finally come, but are we satisfied with the success that we have created for ourselves? Personally, I believe that the things that we have accomplished in the past four years are phenomenal. No challenge was left alone without giving it a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thank you for always being there because, without you, life is impossible. And last but not least, to our friends that we have made. Thanks for being supportive at both the best of times and the worst of times. You actually made schoolsomewhat tolerable, and you helped keep my sanity. Without you, life would be boring, so I thank you for making it enjoyable. As you can see, many people have played major roles in our journey to success. These great people have helped by opening up many opportunities, and by taking these opportunities, we can make the world a better place for future generations. If we can accomplish this, which I believe we can, we will show the greatest gratitude of all time. By graduating from Warren High today, we are one step closer to making our wildest dreams come true. No matter which path we travel, we will always remember our journey began here. Piscine, later shortened by himself to Pi, is the main character, the protagonist, and throughout most of this novel just a teenager. At the beginning of the story the reader is taken to the world of Pondicherry, India and to the Pondicherry Zoo run by the Patel Family. The Patel family consists of Pi s mom, Gita, his dad Santosh and his older brother Ravi. As Pi grows up he takes you through his good and bad times, he takes you through the four religions. The third and final part of this book is called Benito Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico. This part is a manuscript from two workers from the Japanese Ministry of Transport, who found out that Pi finally landed. They came to find out exactly why the ship sank. Pi doesn t know for sure why it sank, but he tells the his story. They don t believe that he survived all that time with a Bengal tiger. So he tells them another version just as graphic with replacing the hyena with a cook from the ship, his mom as the orangutan, and a sailor as the hurt zebra. He of course replaced himself with the tiger. The workers weren t thrilled with this story either but all Pi says is, In both stories the ship sinks, my entire family dies, and I suffers (317). One replies yes, that s true. He then tells them that since they can t tell the truth to take the story that they prefer, and go with God. This book was a gripping story that keeps you reading from beginning to end. When I started reading this book I received different responses, from oh it was amazing to that was pure crap. I took both opinions into count and picked it up to start reading. The beginning started out to slow for my taste but I stayed with it, eventually I got immersed in the story. • 8. Taking a Look at Medieval Tournaments In the 17th century, medieval tournaments became unpopular because of the invention of guns and crossbows. Tournaments are usually competitions in a sport and the winner is rewarded with a prize. There were many types of tournaments that knights could compete and or participate in during the Middle Ages. In tournaments, you could gain prizes, reputation, and respect. There were many things that could change the outcome of tournaments depending on what type of lances you used or the armor. The tournaments served as a symbol for lives of knights in the Middle Ages. This is shown in these three ways: chivalry, their daily life, and types of battles they participated in. Chivalry was the code that knights practiced daily. This code knights lived by, consisted of religious, moral, and social protocols. The religious protocol is exemplified by always keeping faith in themselves and their peers. Another way that religion was exemplified by their code, was to worship God and keep his church in check, and to not sin. They were also required to always hold forth the truth. Some ways that exemplified their morality, were by living for fame and glory. Knights had the obligation to be social, to respect their elders and to take orders from those who had more power than they did as a knight. The knight would take on the challenges of bravely fighting to defend their lords. There were many things made at tournaments, one of which was respect and reputation. Being respected as a ... • 9. Comparative Value Of Survival Processing The brain is a complex system, and humans are constantly exposed to different things and experiences that need to be retained. But how does it choose which memories to retain and how does it retain in the first place? Adaptive Memory: The Comparative Value of Survival Processing (Nairne, Pandeirada, Thompson) The human brain is often biased towards different subjects. The limbic system is the beginning of the memorization process, and it allows for both memorization and learning. (Cretu, Simona Mariana, 2013) The first experiment was used to observe survival based processing by putting test subjects through 5 different scenarios. (Nairne, J. S., Pandeirada, J. S., Thompson, S. R., 2008) The human mind often retain things regarding survival. When put into a survival based scenario, things such as food objects and objects needed to survive were much more retainable then personal experiences and pleasantness. The survival scenario was where one must survive in a stranded grassland in a foreign land. The test subjects were given a list of words, and was asked to rate the words by relevancy to the situation on a scale of 1(totally irrelevant) to 5(extremely relevant). The second task was to rate the pleasantness of each word based on the scale of 1 (totally unpleasant) to 5 (extremely pleasant). The third task focused on imagery. The test subject was asked to rate a list of words based on the difficulty of recalling mental images on a scale of 1(low imagery) to 5 (high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. My Brother s Life I couldn t believe it when the tomato red rental car pulled into our gravel driveway. He s here, I shouted, racing outside to welcome my nephew who had driven across the country to visit us. After greeting him with hugs, we watched as Evan s eyes took in our cabin, nestled in the woods. So this is White Pines, he said. At that moment I wished I could crawl inside Evan s head and see what his first impressions were. If I were a betting woman, I d bet my life that curiosity had forced my nephew into visiting. We d invited my brother s family for a visit several times over the years, but they had never come. Eventually our families had grown up. But as my sons and their cousins stayed in touch, their cousins seemed curious about the kind of lifestyle we led snuggled in the mountains. I believe Evan finally had to check it out for himself before life s obligations made it impossible. Not only had my children and their cousins grown up on different sides of the country, but world s apart when it came to lifestyles. My brother led a traditional life, which offered a beautiful home, the latest clothing styles, and security; while our family had chosen a meager lifestyle, unlike anything my brother s kids could imagine. And while two of our kids had left the nest and blessed us with grandchildren, we felt honored that two of our adult children shared our home. • 12. Enable Others To Act (FFA) Enable Others to Act I remembered when I first joined the FFA, I felt a little out of place. I recall attending my first National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Civil Rights Movement made progress, but racial discrimination was still apparent. Blacula s target audience were the African Americans who were impacted by racial discrimination in the early 1970 s. The effects of this discrimination can be seen from the beginning of the film. Maumuwalde is dressed in a European suit. While his wife Luva s face paintings, basic jewelry, and traditional tribal attire demonstrate that Maumuwalde, an African Prince, has been westernized. Maumuwalde brings his wife with him when he goes to ask Dracula to help him abolish slavery. Instead of agreeing to help them, he states that his beautiful wife Luva would be a welcome addition to his house slaves. Dracula is a white man in the film, and his actions are symbolic of racial discrimination still experienced by African Americans. Dracula completely belittles Maumuwalde s masculinity. Bram Stoker s Dracula does not have a racial conflict because it was written with all European characters. However, the theme of repressed masculinity is seen in both works. In Bram Stoker s Dracula, Count Dracula claims Johnathan as his sexual property. Dracula reduces Johnathan s male identity to nothing. Luva and Johnathan are viewed as property by Dracula. Lay le Freine explores themes of patience being rewarded, of the oppressed turning out to be noble, and of identity establishment. Le Freine and her mother form a central conflict within the moral structure of the tale that condemns envy and rewards kindness. The mother is so envious of the birth of her neighbour s twins that she spreads a rumour that a woman only gives birth to twins if they belong to two different men. Through this subplot, Lay le Freine includes reference to the extensive superstition about whether or not a woman is virtuous if she gives birth to twins. The presence of this superstition may reflect the court s strictness about reproduction levels, particularly to do with the poor, during the medieval times during which this was written. Pressure from the court, the church, as well as embarrassment within society could have often lead to the abandonment of a child; such as le Freine. In her story, le Freine manages to flourish even though she has been exposed, proving that her difficulties have not damaged, but improved her character; And damisel Freyn, so hende of mouth, / Her semblaunt and her gentrise, / Her lovesum eighen, her rode so bright (ll. 265, 268, 269). In this way, this story is incendiary in nature since it ignites a feeling of confidence in the audience who would enjoy hearing about a mistreated character like themselves, who rises from the ashes despite their limitations to prove themselves noble, and despite having nothing to their name. Katherine Philips and Ben Jonson were two poets who implemented the elegiac form in Orinda Upon Little Hector Philips , On My First Son , and On My First Daughter respectively. Although Philips and Jonson s elegies contain obvious similarities regarding the nature of the works, the differences between the approaches taken to mourn their children are quite contrasting. Of the two poets, Philip s moves farther away from the consoling nature that religion provides for Jonson. Philips s elegy is raw with the emotion of a grieving mother who cannot seem to find consolation in the world. She got a taste of what she wanted: she [saw] him and then he disappeared (Philips 5). Orinda Upon Little Hector Philips is best illustrated as a mother s progression through her grief. It begins with Philips being robbed of her son the first stanza, the second stanza has a sense of disbelief, in the third stanza the pain of her son s death seems to engulf her, in the fourth stanza Philips grief is detached from those around her, and the final stanza enforces a type of grudging acceptance that this is the last of her unhappy...verse (Philips 20). Normally, the end of unhappy...verse (Philips 20) would signify the return of a happy verse, but this is not what Philips is implying. She will cease to write due to her seemingly unending unhappiness. Through this maternal perspective there is seemingly a stronger connection between the poet and the lost child. Conflict theory focuses on society as a whole. While trying to find correlations between violence and masculinity, the role of society has a large influence. Caricatures, such as the mammy, have given a negative impression on African Americans since the end of slavery. From a young age, children are let to believe that African Americans are inferior to whites, producing a negative image upon African Americans. Even in todays world, caricatures still influence the shaping that people have upon African Americans, many in the use of cartoons, movies, or television shows. Wherever we are or whatever we are doing, the fact is we are likely to be surrounded and influenced by advertisements. For more than a hundred years, though, commercial advertisements for products and services have been vying for the attention of the consumer. Those businesses found that the bigger and bolder the claims they made, the more people bought their products and chose them over the competition. This type of misbehavior can cause the school climate to be unconducive to learning. Because of the growing epidemic (trend) of bullying, it is a need to further research the effects that bullying has on the special educationstudent. In the article by Rose, Swearer, Espelage (2012) the authors explained that further research should be conducted to determine if anti bullying programs effectively impact exceptional education students or if modifications were needed The authors also argued that bullying not only affects the regular student, but it possibly puts the special need student at a higher risk. • 36. Analysis Of Abc s Fice Essay As a predecessor of NBC s The Office, both created by Greg Daniels and Mike Schur, Parks and Recreation (or P R for short) had big shoes to fill. At first, the show did not impress many, and its ratings were low. The first season seemed not to have a place, like a show trying to be something it was not, until it found its footing. Feminismwas the missing piece of the puzzle. The show went on to become a success even more so than The Office. So what separates the two? P R eventually gave us something The Office never did: real world issues, served up with clever wit. The fictional worlds most television shows take place in, are almost entirely post feminist. Unlike these sexism free utopias, P R normalizes feminism, reminding us that it exists and is important; it is the stepping stone we need to further conversations about inequality. While the text of P R is consistently the most obviously empowering aspect of the show, production practices and audience consumption are also rich with evidence of this series feminist potential. It s important that I clarify that when I say feminism, I am talking about liberal feminism, or, white feminism. The kind of feminism you see in P R is women having a seat at the table, or breaking the glass ceiling feminism. The show lacks intersectional views and never touches upon racial, class or LGBT issues. Whether or not the use of liberal feminism is problematic or not, is not what I am here to argue. The curves of all three samples show hysteresis behavior and belong to type IV isotherms31. It suggests that our samples exhibit mesoporous structure with pore sizes larger than 5.6 nm (Table 2). The pore diameter of thiol functionalized SBA 15 calculated by the BJH theory is smaller than that of SBA 15, which is attributed to the anchoring of thiol moiety to the silanol group in the interior wall of SBA 1540. The decrease of pore size, while maintaining type IV isotherm characteristics in thiol functionalized SBA 15, is one possible reason that thiol moieties are located along the interior pore channels of SBA 15, not in the internal framework of SBA 15. The further decrease of pore size in Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 can be explained by the attachment of bismuth to the thiol group, narrowing the inner pore channel of SBA 15. The BET surface areas of SBA 15, thiol functionalized SBA 15, and Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 are 847, 512, and 347 m2/g, respectively. The pore volumes of those are 1.03, 0.85, and 0.62 cm3/g, respectively (shown in Table 2). The gradual decrease of the surface area and pore volume can also be understood in the attachment of thiol group to the inner wall of SBA 15 or bismuth to the thiol group as discussed above. The internet s main goal is the spread of information, but sometimes the information isn t obtained in a way which agrees with laws put in place to protect patent and copyrightholders, and trademark owners. Since the invention and mass adoption of the internet, IP laws have been struggling to keep up and law makers have had to start thinking about IP as it pertained to the internet and how people used it. Websites like Pirate Bay and Megaupload allowed for millions of people to illegally obtain copies of their favorite software, songs, games, and much more. Stealing on the internet is not a hard thing to do, the costs of copying are not high, and people can do it anonymously. • 51. Eisenstein Beyond The Shot Eisenstein also discusses intellectual montage as being conflict within a shot, rather than just the juxtaposition of two shots side by side. In Beyond the Shot , Eisenstein describes two specific sorts of conflict within a shot: the conflict between an object and its spatial nature and the conflict between an event and its temporal nature (88). The first one is used widely throughout the film, as well as in the casino scene. However, the second type of conflict within a shot is not used in the casino scene. The first, described as being achieved through optical distortion (88), is exhibited in shot 52. The camera movement in this shot helps to achieve this sort of conflict, as the camera both zooms in and tracks out at the same time while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film uses the intellectual and overtonal montage, especially in the casino scene, to showcase the motifs of the film and elicit a response from the viewer that allows them to create meaning from these motifs and other recognizable conventions. This, in turn, created a dialectical meaning for the scene in relation to the entire film: once Lola was able to take control of her situation, she was able to save Manni. Run Lola Run ended up being an exceptional film to compare to Eisenstein s theories, and there could be many more other possibilities in how to analyze this film in comparison to his other theories of ... In 1508, the circumstances forced Julius II to create the League of Cambrai or more melodramatically known as the Holy League, an anti Venetian alliance between the papacy, Louis XII, who then ruled Milan, Emperor Maximilian I, and Ferdinand II of Spain, who was king of Naples. The league troops defeated Venice in May 1509 near Cremona, and the Papal States were restored. Although the League was initially successful, by 1510, King Louis XII was regarding Pope Julius II as a greater threat than Venice. For that reason, France changed sides in the war and allied itself with Venice. Not long after, Venice submitted to Julius II and allied itself with the papacy against France. Following a year of fighting over the Romagna, during which the Veneto Papal alliance was repeatedly defeated, the Pope proclaimed a Holy League against the French in October of 1511. This league rapidly grew to include England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. In 1512, Julius II successfully drove French across the Alps, but it was at the cost of the occupation of Northern Italy by other powers, and Julius II, though he had secured the papal authority in the states immediately around Rome, was essentially as far as ever from realizing his dream of an ...
