The Spanish Conquistadors were adventurers during the Medieval times who sought fame and riches by exploring and conquering lands in the Americas following the Reconquest of Spain from the Muslims. Key figures like Hernando Cortes and Francisco Pizarro led expeditions to conquer the Aztec and Inca empires, respectively, using deception, violence, and technology advantages to defeat forces many times their size and claim the lands and wealth for Spain. The Conquistadors were motivated by monetary gain, expanding Catholicism and the Spanish empire.
This ancient breed was named after the region in northern Mexico where it might have originated. The Chihuahua's origins are uncertain. It might have been brought to Mexico by the Chinese; yet it is more likely that it descended from various Aztec ancestors, including the Techichi. The Chihuahua was a favorite sacred animal of the Aztecs, who consumed the dogs as holy food and sacrificed them to the gods. The Chihuahua also brought good luck to the home. Several specimens are thought to have been brought to Spain during the Spanish conquest. The Chihuahua was first bred in the United States in the 19th century. The breed soon became highly prized and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904. He arrived in Europe after World War II. In 1995, the FCI recognized a new standard with a weight range of 1 to 6 1/2 lbs., but a weight between 2 to 4 1/2 lbs. is still preferred.
The Chihuahua is now reputed to be one of the most popular small dog breeds in the world.

Editor's Notes
Conquistadors would plunder native tribes and civilizations in the Americas, gaining riches of gold, silver, and spices. When conquistadors returned from their conquests on the new world, they were hailed as heroes in Spain. When Conquistadors went on conquests, they always brought Catholic priests with them, so as to convert the heathen natives to Catholicism. The land conquered by the Conquistadors throughout their conquests grew the ever-expanding Spanish Empire. Soon these new lands would be called Mexico.
