World Geography Research Paper Topics: North America 
Paper Requirements

1. Using the map on page 174, choose a major terrorist attack (#s 5, 7, 8, 9) and conduct further 
research. Write a paper which explores the event (summarize briefly), the group responsible 
and their stated political agenda, the reaction of the American people, and the impact this 
attack had on US policy. 
2. Conduct research on Maryland’s Smart Growth initiative. Why has Maryland made stopping 
urban sprawl a priority? What successes has this program had? Are there groups opposed to 
this program? Explain. What impact has this program had on Allegany County? 
3. Conduct research and discuss the ideas of the “melting pot” or “mosaic” in terms of American 
immigration. What factors led to the rise of the “mosaic” idea becoming increasingly popular? 
Be sure to fully explain the arguments of both sides, including your position as to which idea 
creates the best America.
