The First Amendment & You: You Decide
The student editors of a newspaper at a public school refused to publish the word “Redskins” (their
school’s mascot), deeming it offensive. Specifically, student editors did not publish a letter to the editor
written by a member of the school’s football team which repeatedly used the word. After being told to
run the letter, student editors instead ran an editorial explaining their desire not to publish the letter
unless they could substitute “R-------“ for the word “Redskins.” The school’s administration has pulled
$1,200 of funding from the publication and suspended its Editor-in-Chief for one month.
Write a one paragraph-long (5-6 quality sentences) opinion about this case. Do you believe the
student editors of the newspaper have had their First Amendment rights violated? Why or why not?
Be specific, using evidence from other Supreme Court cases you’ve read about to back up your
opinion.
