Dr. Florence Rena Sabin was a pioneering female scientist in the late 19th/early 20th century. She overcame difficulties as one of the first female students admitted to Johns Hopkins Medical School. Her research on the lymphatic system and cellular defenses laid the groundwork for modern immunology. Throughout her career, she held several "firsts" for women in science and medicine, including becoming the first female full professor at Johns Hopkins. She dedicated her later life to public health reform in Colorado before passing away in 1953.
Celebrating Black Women Scientists
The blockbuster film about NASA's human computers, Hidden Figures, made famous the black women scientists Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Katherine Johnson. There are so many other black women scientists who also deserve a spotlight, however.

Virginia Henderson was a pioneering nurse who published influential textbooks on nursing principles and practice. She was born in 1897 in Missouri and graduated from the U.S. Army School of Nursing in 1921. After receiving her bachelor's and master's degrees, she joined the faculty at Columbia University. In 1939, she revised an influential nursing textbook. She later joined Yale University faculty and remained there for 40 years, publishing additional influential works. Henderson is considered the 20th century equivalent of Florence Nightingale for her writings on nursing principles and practice. She received many honors for her contributions to the nursing profession before passing away in 1996 at age 98.

2008 Read Posters
The READ poster campaign at Georgetown University's Dahlgren Memorial Library began in 2004 to honor Dr. John M. Eisenberg and promote reading in various fields. Each year, members of the Georgetown community nominate and vote for representatives to be photographed with their favorite books and write short essays about how the books influenced them. The 2008 posters featured essays from faculty, students, and staff on how books such as "The Beak of the Finch" and "The Out of Sync Child" changed their perspectives on topics like evolution, education, and sensory processing disorders.
Wikipedia and Biomedical Research

The Dahlgren Memorial Library supports the mission of Georgetown University Medical Center by acquiring, organizing, and providing access to information resources and services to support teaching, learning, research, patient care, and service. The library offers a variety of resources including over 80 databases, 75 computers, over 3,500 online journals and 200 online medical books. Librarians are available to assist users in finding reliable information and integrating resources and technologies into their work.
