Quiz on Woman of Substance

Before ‘X’ was in the throne, she was a political prisoner. She had a rocky
road to the throne and technically should never have been allowed to reign,
both because she was a woman and her mother was the much-hated ex-wife of
the king. Even though ‘X’s remembered for her high fashions, it’s surprising
to know just how expansive her wardrobe was. According to one estimate, she
may have owned as many as 2,000 pairs of gloves! She was a multi-lingual as
it is believed to have spoken Spanish, Welsh, Irish, Flemish, Greek and the
now defunct tongue of Cornish. She is one of the most successful monarchs in
history. A few rumours still tie her to Shakespeare. She called herself ‘The
Virgin Queen’ because she chose to marry her country instead of a man!

This Prussian-born lady is one of the most ruthless women in world’s
history. Stuck in a loveless marriage to the King of Russia, she orchestrated
a coup to overthrow her wildly unpopular husband Peter III and then
named herself Empress of the Russian Empire in 1762. She is credited for
modernising Russia and established the first state-funded school for girls,
reeled back the power of the church within the state and encouraged the
development of the economy, trade and the arts. She is also known for
her healthy sexual appetite, having numerous lovers’ right up until her
death who she would often gift with an abundance of jewels and titles
before sending them on their way to make room for their replacement.

‘X’ was born in 1775 in Hampshire, England. She lived in a time period
when woman were expected to be wives and mothers and nothing else. So,
it is understandable that she wanted to publish her work anonymously!
Her literary influence remains and the themes and lessons from her
novels still hold up today. She was a bright child and she began writing
when she was just 12 years old. He earliest works were very humorous
and she even wrote a collection of textbook parodies when she was 16. She
called it “The History of England… by a partial, prejudiced and ignorant
historian.” She also wrote many parodies of romance novels although she
was never married! She died at the young age of 41 years old.

‘X’s account is one of the most honest, powerful and poignant of World War
II. Her first name was just a nickname. She received a gift for which she
became famous on 12 June 1942, just a few weeks before her family went
into hiding. Her father had taken her to pick out the red, checked autograph
book on 11 June and she began writing in it on 14 June. Her ordeal has been
translated into almost 70 languages and is an intimate portrayal of one of
the most inhumane moments in history and is able to educate us on the
universal human qualities of emotion, passion, love, hope, desire, fear and
strength. She is one of the most powerful women in 20th Century.

‘X’ was a pioneering physicist and scientist, who coined the term
radioactivity, discovered two new elements (radium and polonium) and
developed a portable x-ray machine. ‘X’ was the first person (not woman)
who has won two separate Noble Prizes, one for physics and another for
chemistry, and to this day she is the only person, regardless of gender, to
receive Noble prizes for two different sciences. During her first few years in
Paris, Marie Curie attended her university classes by day, and worked as a
tutor by night. It was in 1898 that Curie discovered that thorium was a
radioactive substance. However, Gerhard Schmidt took the liberty to publish
Curie’s discovery as his own. She Got Involved in Aiding Soldiers of the First
World War.

‘X’ was born into privilege as the daughter of a famously unstable romantic
poet, Lord Byron (who left her family when ‘X’ was just 2 months old) and
Lady Wentworth. She died of cancer at 36 and it took nearly a century after
her death for people to appreciate her notes which became recognised as the
first description for computer and software, ever. She was a
charming woman of society who was friends with people such as Charles
Dickens, but she is most famous for being the first person ever to publish an
algorithm intended for a computer, her genius being years ahead of her time.

‘X’ is an American novelist and philanthropist. She claims to have begun seriously
writing at the age of 6, when she wrote a 142-page book, titled ‘The Book Worm’, which
was destroyed in a flood. In 1992, she earned her bachelor's degree in English
at Princeton University, where she studied under the Nobel Laureate in Literature Toni
Morrison, who described her as "one of the best students I've ever had in my creative
writing classes". In 2006, she won the American Book Award for her 2005 debut
novel, ‘The Testing of Luther Albright’. She said that it took her 10 years to write, as she
was helping her husband to build his company, giving birth to three children and raising
them. She has been the executive director of Bystander Revolution since she founded it in
2014 and was named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020. She
was interviewed by a person who later became her life partner and world’s one of the
greatest wealthiest person. By September 2020, she was named the world's richest
woman and by December 2020, her net worth was estimated at $62 billion.

involvement in the founding of Amazon.

Some 750 million people in 74 countries tuned in to watch her
nuptials on July 29, 1981. Adjusted for inflation, the wedding cost an
estimated $137 million. Crafted out of ivory silk taffeta, the
billowing dress was embroidered with frilled lace, sequins and
10,000 pearls. It boasted a record-breaking 25-foot-long train and
a 459-foot-long tulle veil, in addition to a number of hidden features.
Although, later she deemed the wedding the “worst day of my life.”

‘X’s father was a teacher and ran an all-girls’ school in her village. In
2012, at the age of 15, ‘X’ publicly spoke out on women’s rights to
education and as a result, a gunman boarded her school bus and shot
her in the head. She moved to the UK where she has become a fierce
presence on the world stage and became the youngest ever recipient of
the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, at 17 years old. She is currently studying
Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford.

One of ‘X’s middle names is Tintin (the other two are Eleanora and Ernman). She has been
diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. ‘X’s parents have impressive careers. Her Mum,
Malena Ernman, is an opera singer. Her Dad, Svante - an actor and author - is named after
Svante Arrhenius, the Nobel prize-winning scientist who first calculated how CO2 could
lead to the greenhouse effect. ‘X’s collection of speeches ‘No One Is Too Small To Make A
Difference’ was published in May 2019. All proceeds from the book sales are donated to
charity. ‘X’ received the Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award for
2019 and she was nominated by three Norwegian MPs for 2018’s Nobel Peace Prize. ‘X’ was
named TIME Magazine’s Person Of The Year in December 2019. She is the first person born
in the 21st Century to have been given the award, and also the youngest recipient.
