Women face many challenges in Chad. In rural areas, the exploitation of women is still common and domestic violence occurs frequently. Girls are often subject to arranged marriages starting at ages 11-12. Female genital mutilation is still practiced by 60% of the population. Raising the status of women could help improve high maternal mortality rates by allowing women more autonomy over their health and lives.
