In Christianity and Islam, marriage is intended for lifelong commitment between a man and woman, and same-sex marriage goes against religious teachings. However, civil law has made same-sex marriage legal. While places of worship are not required to perform same-sex marriages, some accept same-sex couples through blessings rather than marriage ceremonies. Attitudes also vary between denominations.

• In Christianity it is believed that a marriage is an lifelong commitment
secured through the sharing of vows under Gods observance. Christians
do this in a place of worship with the congregation present as witnesses. It
is seen as sacred and holy event.
• However, relationships break down as part of human nature and
remarriage is something that may be needed for individuals to start again.
In Roman Catholicism it is forbidden to remarry. It is seen as form of
adultery. It is stated in the bible that a Church should avoid remarrying
anybody after a divorce. "Blessing these relationships should be avoided,
so that confusion does not arise among the faithful regarding the value of
marriage." Therefore, if you were a Christian you would be inclined to
avoid wanting a divorce as you wouldn’t be permitted to remarry at all.
• However, some religious believers do accept remarrying. For example in
Islam as long as the three stages of a divorce are carried out accurately
and fairly, divorce is permitted as a last resort and remarriage is
encouraged.

Therefore, a Muslim will agree as in the Quran it is
written,‘ Sex is rewarded and a blessing from Allah.’
This means that Sex is seen as an integral element to a

• In Christianity Sex is also seen as gift from God, it is one
of the four types of love. Eros- loving as form of
intimacy. The Bible states through the Ten
commandents about the value of Chastity therefore
enforcing the status of Sex being a gift not an everyday
procreation activity. ‘Though shall not commit
adultery.’

Christianity:
• Divorce is never God’s intention. Promises of marriage are made to carry
out a life long union. The Bible states, and Roman Catholics believe; ‘...that
any man who divorces his wife, other than because of unfaithfulness
commits adultery.’ This shows that divorce is seen as a sin. As committing
adultery is against one of the ten commandments of being Christian.
Islam:
• Although Divorce is permitted in Islam, marriage is still seen as sacred and
permanent. The Prophet Mohammad stated that Divorce is seen as
‘obnoxious.’ It is stated that there should be three stages before any
divorce is carried. The Mahr must also be returned. In the Hadith is it
written, ‘the most detestable act Allah has permitted is that of Divorce.’
Therefore implying that although it is accepted, it is frowned upon and not
liked amongst the Muslim ummah.

• Catholics say for homosexuals to be celibate, so will not allow marriages
to take place, but gay people must be treated with respect.

won’t.
• Quakers say it is the quality of the relationship that counts, and the
expression of love, so will allow.
• By refusing a same sex marriage to take place in a place of worship could
be seen as discrimination.

17. • Religions hold a strong view on the idea of same sex marriages. In both Christianity
and Islam it is simply forbidden.
• However in the modern era of today the law has been changed to permit the
joining together of individuals of the same sex. Nevertheless there is no legal
backing to force a place of worship to marry these couples. Churches or Mosques
do not have to allow this to happen. If a priest of Imam wants to allow their
respective place of worship to carry out the marriage then that is OK. Religiously
however this may be contradictory. The Quran states, ‘if two men carry out
indecency then punish them both.’ This showing that under Sharia law it is
punishable, physically to carry out these actions.
• The Bible also confirms this view by stating, ‘ No man should lay with another and
no woman should lay with a woman.’ Again confirming that the idea of a same sex
relationship is forbidden therefore the joining of the two in a holy place would be
sacrilegious.
• However, Quakers believe that the quality of the relationship outweighs the
gender of those involved. Therefore will argue that same sex marriages should be
permitted in a place of worship. Therefore agreeing with the statement.
• In Islam and Christianity marriage is viewed as a fundamental element of ones
religion. It is designed to permit procreation and to receive the gift of Sex from
God, to reproduce. Same sex couples cannot reproduce.
• Despite their strong views on homosexuality both religions strongly argue that
respect and tolerance should be shown for same sex couples. I agree with this
viewpoint that despite their being a respect and acceptance, same sex couples
should not be allowed to marry in a place of worship. As this goes against the
fundamental principles of marriage and the holy nature of it. Nevertheless this
could be seen as discrimination.
